Kung Fu Soccer, a spinoff of Stephen Chow’s 2001 martial arts sports comedy Shaolin Soccer, is headed to theaters in North America. Written and directed by Chow, the film will be launched internationally by Encore Films, with a release expected later this year as distributors look to tap into World Cup momentum.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Kung Fu Soccer follows the Emei Women’s Football Team, whose martial arts skills power an underdog run in the Supreme Invincible Cup. Zhang Xiaofei, Dilraba Dilmurat and Lay Zhang Yixing star, with the film expected to feature the kind of heavy visual effects that helped define Shaolin Soccer.
