  1. While not a lot of specific details have been made available, McFarlane Toys has announced that they have obtained the rights to make product based on the upcoming Denis Villeneuve’s Dune movie coming in December from Warner Bros. What is not entirely clear is if McFarlane can, or has any plans to also release product based on the original 1984 movie. Even if the license allows them to make product based on the original Dune movie, my guess they will primarily focus on the new one. At least starting out. We will update this story when more details become available.
  2. There is no denying that the 80's was a great time for cartoons and action figures based on those cartoons. The decade produced a lot of classic properties, some of which are still active today. The three most well known, arguably are G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero, Transformers and Masters of the Universe. Still there are many properties from the 80's that developed decent size fan followings, but have never really been brought back for a major modern toy line. One of the most notable properties that fits that description is M.A.S.K. (Mobile Armored Strike Kommand), which is currently held by Hasbro. There have been rumblings in recent years that Hasbro is looking at ways to bring that property back to toy shelves and TV, but nothing definitive. Two other animated shows/action figures from the 80's that I am often asked if they will ever return are Silverhawks and BraveStarr. For those not familiar with these two properties, Silverhawks was an animated series that first debuted in 1986 from Lorimar-Telepictures. It focused on a team of cyborg-like character lead by Commander Stargazer. They fought the evil Mon*Star. The most recognizable character from this franchise is Quicksilver, who wears a silver bird-like armor. In 1987 Kenner produced a fairly short-lived action figure line based on the show. Interesting enough, it was LJN who was supposed to make the toys for this show, but backed out of the deal at the last minute. LJN is probably best known for making the original ThunderCat toys. Warner Bros. now holds the rights to Silverhawks when they purchased Lorimar-Telepictures back in 1989. Mon*Star actually made a brief appearance in the 2011 ThunderCats remake animated series. BraveStarr followed in the foot-steps of Masters of the Universe. The animated series was created by Filmation and the toys were produced by Mattel. The figures hit shelves in 1986, a year before the show aired on TV. Both were fairly short-lived. In fact the show is somewhat notoriously noted for being the final series made by Lou Scheimer's Filmation before the company shut down. The concept of the show and toys were based on a space/western type mash-up. The main character was a Native American named Marshal BraveStarr, and his main adversary was a dragon like creature known as Stampede, who was voiced by Alan Oppenheimer. The same person who voiced He-Man's arch-nemesis Skeletor on the Filmation Master of the Universe series. Another notable villain in the BraveStarr series was a character known as Tex Hex, who was originally created for the Filmation Ghostbusters series. Mattel only made one series of 8" action figures which did not include Stampede. Both Bravestarr and Tex Hex did get figures, and they featured an interesting gimmick called Laser Fire Backpacks. These backpacks shot infrared beams that activated sound effects. the line also got some playsets made for it but was canceled before the second wave of figures could go into production. While I can't say 100%, I believe Mattel still retains the licensing rights for BraveStarr action figures. So that brings us to the question at hand today. Will we ever see modern versions of Silverhawks and Bravestarr action figures officially made? I honestly don't know, but I do think it is possible. As to who would make them, well the two most likely choices would be either Mattel or perhaps more likely a smaller company like Super7. I don't think Mattel would bother with either license unless there was a movie or new animated series in the works. Super7 however has a seemingly good relationship with both Mattel and Warner Bros, and made action figures for both companies with He-Man and ThunderCats. Super7 has even teased in recent months that they have some pretty exciting licenses in the works for 2022. To illustrate how cool I think modern versions of these characters might look in action figure form, we are featuring the custom work of boy_toys528, who has created custom figures of both Quicksilver from Silverhawks and Marshal BraveStarr from the BraveStarr series. Let us know what you think, would you like to see new Silverhawks and BraveStarr figures made, and which company do you think would be best suited for the job?
  3. Spinmaster last week released a press release stating that they have entered into a 3 year agreement with Warner Bros. Consumer Products (WBCP) which includes allowing them to make DC Comic based things like remote control and robotic vehicles, water toys and games and puzzles type products. While not 100% clear, this doesn't seem like something that will effect the production of action figures from Mattel who had been the master toy license holder for DC for many years now. We've reached out to Mattel to see if we can get any clarification from them and will update you if we hear anything back. See the press release below from Spinmaster: Press Release: Spin Master Corp. (TSX:TOY; www.spinmaster.com), a leading global children's entertainment company, announced today that it has entered into a three-year global licensing agreement with Warner Bros. Consumer Products (WBCP). Beginning Spring 2020, Spin Master will be a new toy licensee for DC in the boy's action category, remote control and robotic vehicles, water toys and games and puzzles. "Partnering with an iconic brand like DC is a major milestone for Spin Master and is part of our strategy to invest in successful licenses to further grow and diversify our business," said Ben Gadbois, Spin Master's Global President and COO. "Children everywhere have been entertained and inspired by DC Super Heroes™ and Super-Villains™ for more than 80 years and we're honoured to be a part of that storytelling and imagined play. We are looking forward to bringing Spin Master's renowned innovation to the toy line and to sharing more details about this exciting partnership in the new year." Spin Master continues to build a strong portfolio of licensed products, including its 10-year licensing partnership with FELD Entertainment as the worldwide master toy partner and the soon to be launched line of Monster Jam® trucks. Spin Master was recently recognized for its leadership in licensing by Kidscreen, who named Spin Master #1 in Licensing on the 2018 Hot 50 Companies ranking.
  4. Warner Bros. has announced they are moving the release date of the Robert Pattinson Batman from June 25, 2021 to Oct. 1, 2021.
  5. "The Batman" director Matt Reeves has posted images giving us our first look at the new Batmobile for the upcoming movie.
  6. 'Joker' director Todd Phillips has come forward to clear up the confusion between conflicting reports from The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline concerning a potential 'Joker' sequel. THR reported that Warner Bros. was ready to do a 'Joker' sequel and Phillips had a meeting with studio chairman Toby Emmerich to ask for the “rights to develop a portfolio of DC characters" origin stories.” Deadline reported back saying the meeting never happened and no deals were in place. IndieWire had the chance to speak with Phillips and the Director was open about clearing up the truth behind the rumors. As for the October 7th meeting and pitching additional DC origin stories, Phillips disputes THR’s reporting and says the writer “jumped the gun.” “I can honestly say to you there was no meeting that ever happened on October 7 where I marched in,” Phillips said. “First of all, if you know me and my career, that’s not my style. I made a huge comedy at Warner Bros., ‘The Hangover,’ and I didn’t suddenly become a comedy factory producer, like, oh, let’s just churn out movies. Bradley [Cooper] and I have a production company at Warners. I’ve been at Warners for 15, 16 years. We have two things in development at all times, not 40 things like some people. I’m not the kind of guy who goes marching in saying I want these 40 titles. I just don’t have the energy.” Phillips pitched Warner Bros. on doing a series of darker, more character-focused comic book films. “When I pitched them ‘Joker,’ it wasn’t a movie, it was, let’s do a whole label,” Phillips said. “They shut that down quickly and I get it. Who am I to walk in and start a label at a film studio? But they said, let’s do this one.” As for the status of the 'Joker' sequel, Phillips maintains there are no deals in place nor is there a script being developed at this time. “Well, a movie doesn’t make a billion dollars and they don’t talk about a sequel,” Phillips said. “Joaquin and I have publicly said we’ve been talking about a sequel since week two of shooting because it’s a fun thing to talk about. But the [THR] article was referring to other things than that that were just frankly untrue. I don’t know how it gets started, if it’s some assistant trying to gain street cred with a writer.” “Here’s the real truth about a sequel,” Phillips said. “While Joaquin and I have talked about it, and while touring the world with Warner Bros executives — going to Toronto, and Venice, and other places — of course, we’re sitting at dinner and they’re saying, ‘So, have you thought about…?’ But, talking about contracts, there’s not a contract for us to even write a sequel, we’ve never approached Joaquin to be in a sequel. Will that happen? Again, I just think the article was anticipatory at best.”

  8. Did the director Todd Phillips do it or not do it? The Hollywood Reporter is exclusively reporting that 'Joker' director Todd Phillips walked into the Warner Bros. studios and sat down for talks about reprising his role as director for a second Joker film. Phillips would co-write the second film with the first Joker screenplay writer Scott Silver. THR is also claiming that sources have informed them that Phillips wants the rights to develop a portfolio of DC characters' origin stories. Even Warner Bros. wouldn't have to think twice since 'Joker' marks the fourth DC title to cross the $1 billion dollar mark and has sequel options in Joker star Joaquin Phoenix, who has emerged as a strong contender in the Oscar best actor race. Sounds too good to be true? That's what Deadline is saying by shooting down the story from THR. Deadline is reporting: Multiple sources are telling Deadline that THR falsely reported that Phillips met with Warner Bros film chief Toby Emmerich to pitch a portfolio of DC character origin stories. The truth is that Martin Scorsese contemplated directing the first Joker but later dropped out and Phillips never had an October meeting with Warner Bros. about doing additional movie follow-ups with other DC character films. No comments have been made by Todd Phillips as of this reporting.
  9. Neil Patrick Harris is the latest addition to the ensemble cast of Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II for the upcoming fourth installment of the “Matrix” franchise. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will be reprising their roles in the film but sources close to the film would not confirm Harris’ specific role. Rumor is that Abdul-Mateen II could be playing a young Morpheus. Lana Wachowski is helming the project for Warner Bros. from a script Wachowski co-wrote with Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell. Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures will produce and globally distribute the film. Production is expected to begin in 2020. Source: Variety
  10. Forever alone in a crowd, Arthur Fleck seeks connection. Yet, as he trods the sooted Gotham City streets and rides the graffitied mass transit rails of a hostile town teeming with division and dissatisfaction, Arthur wears two masks. One, he paints on for his day job as a clown. The other he can never remove; it’s the guise he projects in a futile attempt to feel he’s a part of the world around him, and not the misunderstood man whom life is repeatedly beating down. Fatherless, Arthur has a fragile mother, arguably his best friend, who nicknamed him Happy, a moniker that’s fostered in Arthur a smile that hides the heartache beneath. But, when bullied by teens on the streets, taunted by suits on the subway, or simply teased by his fellow clowns at work, this social outlier only becomes even more out of sync with everyone around him. Directed, co-written and produced by Todd Phillips, “Joker” is the filmmaker’s original vision of the infamous DC villain, an origin story infused with, but distinctly outside, the character’s more traditional mythologies. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. Longing for any light to shine on him, he tries his hand as a stand-up comic, but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty and, ultimately, betrayal, Arthur makes one bad decision after another that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty, allegorical character study. Three-time Oscar nominee Phoenix (“The Master,” “Walk the Line,” “Gladiator”) stars in the titular role alongside Oscar winner Robert De Niro (“Raging Bull,” “The Godfather: Part II”). The film also stars Zazie Beetz (TV’s “Atlanta,” “Deadpool 2”), Frances Conroy (TV’s “American Horror Story,” Hulu’s “Castle Rock”), Brett Cullen (“42,” Netflix’s “Narcos”), Glenn Fleshler (TV’s “Billions,” “Barry”), Bill Camp (“Red Sparrow,” “Molly’s Game”), Shea Whigham (“First Man,” “Kong: Skull Island”), Marc Maron (TV’s “Maron,” “GLOW”), Douglas Hodge (“Red Sparrow,” TV’s “Penny Dreadful”), Josh Pais (upcoming “Motherless Brooklyn,” “Going in Style”) and Leigh Gill (HBO’s “Game of Thrones”). Oscar nominee Phillips (“Borat,” “The Hangover” trilogy) directed from a screenplay he co-wrote with Oscar-nominated writer Scott Silver (“The Fighter”), based on characters from DC. The film was produced by Phillips and Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper (“A Star Is Born,” “American Sniper”) under their Joint Effort banner, and Oscar nominee Emma Tillinger Koskoff (“The Wolf of Wall Street”). It was executive produced by Michael E. Uslan, Walter Hamada, Aaron L. Gilbert, Joseph Garner, Richard Baratta, and Bruce Berman. Behind the scenes, Phillips was joined by director of photography Lawrence Sher (“Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” “The Hangover” trilogy), production designer Mark Friedberg (“If Beale Street Could Talk,” “Selma”), editor Jeff Groth (“War Dogs,” “The Hangover Part III”), and Oscar-winning costume designer Mark Bridges (“Phantom Thread,” “The Artist”). The music is by Hildur Guðnadóttir (HBO’s “Chernobyl,” “Sicario: Day of the Soldado”). Warner Bros. Pictures Presents, in Association with Village Roadshow Pictures, in Association with BRON Creative, a Joint Effort Production, a Film by Todd Phillips, “Joker.”
  11. Lana Wachowski—the co-creator of the record-breaking and genre-defining world of “The Matrix”—is set to write, direct and produce an all-new film, returning audiences to the reality-bending universe. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will star in the film, reprising their roles as Neo and Trinity, respectively. Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures will produce and globally distribute the film. The announcement was made today by Toby Emmerich, Chairman, Warner Bros. Pictures Group. “We could not be more excited to be re-entering ‘The Matrix’ with Lana,” said Emmerich. “Lana is a true visionary—a singular and original creative filmmaker—and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in ‘The Matrix’ universe.” “Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now,” said Wachowski. “I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.” Wachowski is producing the film together with Grant Hill. The screenplay is by Wachowski, Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell. The three previous films—“The Matrix” (1999), “The Matrix Reloaded” (2003) and “The Matrix Revolutions” (2003)—have earned more than $1.6 billion at the global box office and were all top-10 domestic hits in their respective years of release. “The Matrix Revolutions” was also the first film ever to release simultaneously in every major country at the same hour around the world. Special 20th-Anniversary screenings of “The Matrix” are being held at select AMC Theatres locations across the U.S., starting August 30.
  12. Check out a collection of spots for the highly-anticipated second installment of the two-part horror movie based on Stephen King's classic horror novel. Evil resurfaces in Derry as director Andy Muschietti reunites the Losers Club -- young and adult -- in a return to where it all began with "It Chapter Two." The film is Muschietti's follow-up to 2017's critically acclaimed and massive worldwide box office hit "IT," which grossed over $700 million globally. Both redefining and transcending the genre, "IT" became part of the cultural zeitgeist as well as the highest-grossing horror film of all time. Because every 27 years evil revisits the town of Derry, Maine, "It Chapter Two" brings the characters -- who've long since gone their separate ways -- back together as adults, nearly three decades after the events of the first film. IT Chapter Two stars Bill Skarsgard, Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, Bill Hader, James Ransone, Isaiah Mustafa, Jay Ryan, Andy Bean, Jaeden Martell, Wyatt Oleff, Jack Dylan Grazer, Finn Wolfhard, Sophia Lillis, Chosen Jacobs, Jeremy Ray Taylor Release: September 6th, 2019
  13. Deadline is reporting that DC Comics is bringing Darkseid to the big screen in the upcoming live-action Warner Bros film The New Gods. The news was originally announced by the projects director, Ava DuVernay from a series of tweets. From the tweets, DuVernay announced the director will be working the next day with Tom King, the DC Comics star writer who won another Eisner Award at this month’s Comic-Con in San Diego on the New Gods script. The Darkseid character was created by Jack Kirby and introduced in 1971 as the cruel galactic despot who lords over Apokolips, a nightmarish planet devoted to war, torture, conquest and total dominance over living things.

  15. New Line has hired Greg Russo to write the script for the movie version of the classic 1978 Taito arcade game Space Invaders. Warner Bros purchased the rights to the game rights several years ago. Weed Road Pictures’ Akiva Goldsman is producing alongside Safehouse Pictures partners Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell. No details on the movie plot details but in the game, a series of blocky aliens descended from the top of the screen to the bottom, and players basically blasted them until their thumbs cramped, or the invaders succeeded in overwhelming the slow-triggered defender of earth. 17. Warner Bros. Pictures is returning all three films in Christopher Nolan’s $2.5 billion “Dark Knight” Trilogy to the biggest of the big screens—IMAX ® film—in honor of the first-ever appearance of Batman in the comics. The announcement was made today by Jeff Goldstein, President, Domestic Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures. First, on Saturday, March 30, the films—2005’s “Batman Begins,” 2008’s “The Dark Knight” and 2012’s “The Dark Knight Rises”—will screen back-to-back at the Universal Cinema AMC at CityWalk Hollywood, California. During an interlude between the second and third films, Nolan will join the audience for a moderated Q&A discussion on the movies. Then on April 13, the Trilogy will screen at AMC Lincoln Square in New York City and AMC Metreon in San Francisco, followed by Cinesphere Ontario Place, Toronto, and IMAX Theatre at the Indiana State Museum, Indianapolis, on April 20, each accompanied by the footage of Nolan’s Los Angeles appearance. In all five cities, all three movies will be seen in the director’s preferred format, IMAX ® 70mm, providing an all-encompassing moviegoing experience. In fact, it was Nolan who, with “The Dark Knight,” was the first filmmaker to shoot the action sequences of a major feature film with IMAX ® cameras, revolutionizing the integration of IMAX and standard formats. He again utilized IMAX cameras even more extensively in “The Dark Knight Rises.” Goldstein stated, “Christopher Nolan broke new ground with the ‘Dark Knight’ Trilogy, and this is a rare chance for today’s audiences to experience these extraordinary films as they were meant to be seen. To have the added privilege of hearing Chris’s insights firsthand makes this a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” Tickets for all events will go on sale beginning Wednesday, March 13, at 9 a.m. PDT, and moviegoers who acquire tickets for all three films will receive a lanyard and special “Dark Knight” Trilogy collectible.
  18. According to THR, Warner Bros. has announced that the sequel to Aquaman 2 will open on December 16th, 2022. The sequel expects Jason Momoa to return in the title role and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, who co-wrote the first film, is officially on board for the sequel. James Wan directed the first movie but it is unclear if Wan will return to helm the sequel or pass the directing off to Peter Safran. Wan and Safran are currently making deals to return as producers. Wan and Safran also developing a spinoff focused on The Trench, in what will be a horror-tinged project about the deadly amphibious creatures who attacked Aquaman and Mera (Amber Heard) in the film.
  19. Warner Bros. is looking to stretch the DC Comics hero Plastic Man onto the big-screen and have hired screenwriter Amanda Idoko to pen the script for a comedic action-adventure. Bob Shaye, the former co-founder of New Line turned producer, will executive produce. The project is very early in the stages with no directors on board and the studio took to half a year to search and hire Idoko for the job. Sources state that Warner Bros. plans on staying true to the light-hearted and even silly tones of the character. DC-based film production president Walter Hamada and Chantal Nong are overseeing for the studio. The hero’s true identity is Patrick “Eel” O’Brian, a crook turned good guy. O’Brian was part of a gang, and during a botched heist is shot and — wouldn’t you know it — also doused with a chemical liquid. Left for dead by the gang, he awakens to find himself imbued with the power to shape-shift and stretch his body into almost anything, thanks to being the most malleable man alive. O’Brian eventually reforms and becomes a police officer. Source: THR

  23. Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” is the second of five all new adventures in the Wizarding World™ created by J.K. Rowling. At the end of the first film, the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) was captured by MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America), with the help of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne). But, making good on his threat, Grindelwald escaped custody and has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over all non-magical beings. In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans, Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world. The film features an ensemble cast led by Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Zoë Kravitz, Callum Turner, Claudia Kim, William Nadylam, Kevin Guthrie, Carmen Ejogo, Poppy Corby-Tuech, with Jude Law and Johnny Depp. “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” is directed by David Yates, from a screenplay by J.K. Rowling. The film is produced by David Heyman, J.K. Rowling, Steve Kloves and Lionel Wigram. Tim Lewis, Neil Blair, Rick Senat and Danny Cohen serve as executive producers. The film reunites the behind-the-scenes creative team from the first “Fantastic Beasts” film, including Oscar-winning director of photography Philippe Rousselot (“A River Runs Through It”), three-time Oscar-winning production designer Stuart Craig (“The English Patient,” “Dangerous Liaisons,” “Gandhi,” the “Harry Potter” films), four-time Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood (“Chicago,” “Memoirs of a Geisha,” “Alice in Wonderland,” “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”), and Yates’ longtime editor Mark Day (the last four “Harry Potter” films). The music is by eight-time Oscar nominee James Newton Howard (“Defiance,” “Michael Clayton,” “The Hunger Games” films). Opening on November 16, 2018, “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” will be distributed worldwide in 2D and 3D in select theatres and IMAX by Warner Bros. Pictures. This film is rated PG-13 for some sequences of fantasy action.
  24. Warner Bros' DCU Chaos Continues - Flash Delayed, Ben Affleck & Henry Cavill Out Entertainment by Jay Cochran - [edit post] October 16, 2018 Variety is reporting the the Flash stand-alone movie which is slated to star Ezra Miller from the Justice League movie will be delayed till some time in 2021. While the movie has never received an official release date, it was expected to start shooting next March and be released some time in 2020. According to the report, the script for the Flash movie is still being tweaked and that Miller himself will soon begin working on the third installment of the Fantastic Beasts trilogy where he has a sizeable supporting role, hence causing him to have a scheduling conflict. Warner Bros' DC Cinematic Universe has been struggling with chaos ever since their Justice League movie failed to perform well at the box office. Variety in this very report seems to confirm rumors that both Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill are officially out as Batman and Superman. Up until now the only modern DC movie to do well at the box office has ben Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman which is already getting a sequel later this year. After that in December Aquaman who is portrayed by Justice League alum Jason Momoa is next up for the stand-alone film treatment, but it is unknown how well it will perform. It's got its work cut out for it if you ask me. If Aquaman has another lack-luster performance at the box-office for Warner Bros, one has to wonder if they will be willing to role the dice at all on Flash or if they will just try and start over completely from scratch. We already have seen them starting to move forward with a Joker stand-alone movie that will star Joaquin Phoenix and seemingly has no connection with the Jared Leto version recently seen in Suicide Squad. Suicide Squad itself may be heading for a major re-haul as it was another movie that was not received well by most DC fans. Recent reports have suggested that Warner Bros is looking to bring in former Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn to write the script and possibly direct the next film. Gunn himself was recently fired by Disney for old tweets dug up online dealing with rape and pedophilia. While many fans have been willing to continue to support the somewhat disgraced director, the move to bring him in on another comic book based project has been viewed by some as nothing more than a publicity stunt on the part of Warner Bros. The future of the DCCU is unclear but everything Warner Bros. does seems to scream to me at least that they really have no clear cut vision for the property, and are just being reactive instead of proactive with it. To me that doesn't bode well for a comic book based universe that will ever be able to dethrone Marvel and Disney as king of the big screen super heroes.
  25. THR reports that former Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn who was recently fired from Disney for old tweets he made regarding rape and pedophilia will now be heading to Warner Bros. to pen the script for the next DC Comic based Suicide Squad movie. No word yet on whether or not he will direct the film or not.
