  1. It's Wednesday, and you know what that means: ToyFarce review! This week, we're having a look at the SDCC Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Samurai turtle 4-pack from NECA. Finally, the 4-pack we always dreamed of! The movie might have been terrible, but the toys are great! Ninja turtles dressed as Samurai, what more could you ask for? (apart from slightly better articulation...). The giant VHS box made its return for the third time, just like the first 2 SDCC movie 4-packs. It also comes with a big sleeve so you can see what's inside. The picture in the front is like the original VHS, but with figures. Shout out to YHS Podcast for getting their quote immortalized on the box! The Samurai turtles come packed with accessories: 4 extra head sculpts (one each, which work with previous figures too), a ton of extra hands, 4 wired soft goods robes, the turtles' weapons (katanas, sais, bo staff and nunchucks), 2 old swords, 4 masks, 3 scepters (ancient, damaged and homemade). The samurai helmets attach to the bandana knots in the back of their heads, which is great to have them stay put. The masks look great, as do the soft goods robes. The details on the figures are amazing. It's a fantastic set to display on your shelf. Comparison pics with the previous movie turtles. More news at 11:00... Cue *Tarzan Boy* from Baltimora... Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh!
  2. Well, The 2023 edition of San Diego Comic Con is now over, and it kinda left us with a huge hole in our wallets, but also in our souls, didn't it? So many good toys, fun reveals, great panels... Whether you were there in person, or just following it via Youtube and social media, this year really did feel special. But how to go back to normal everyday life after this? Here is how you can deal with the 'Post Comic Con Blues'. MEDITATION: I know, I know. Some of you don't really do that kind of things. But picture this: Sit down and close your eyes, and visualize yourself walking through the aisles of the Comic Con. Stop at your favorite booth and just browse the shelves in your mind. Think of it as a 'go to your happy place' kind of thing, but with the NECA, Hasbro, Mondo, or any other of the SDCC booths as your happy place! YOUTUBE: There is a ton of great content that came out of SDCC in the last 4 days. Go to your favorite Youtuber (or Toytuber)'s channel, sit back and enjoy looking at things again, through a different person's eyes. Also, why not try some other channels suggestions on the side? You might find some nice new channel, or see stuff that you didn't see in other videos. How about those The Last Ronin ghosts hidden in NECA's Street Diorama at their booth? Or the teases during the Marvel Legends panel? BUY TOYS: And of course, last but not least: Buy toys! Only a small amount of the things that were revealed during SDCC is already available for pre-order, but it could be smart to make a list of all the things that were revealed that you would like to buy, just to keep track of them and be ready for when they actually drop. You can also come back to that list next year, to see what actually came out and what has been discreetly cancelled... (tons of Hot Toys or Mezco products suffered that fate, sadly). And of course, there's always the next one! Power Con in August, NY ToyFair in late September, New York Comic Con in October... And that's not counting the small local toy conventions! By the time you'll have recovered from this one, there will always be another. This year's San Diego Comic Con did not have any actors or celebrities appearances due to the ongoing Screen Actor's Guild strike, so the focus was on all the other things, which ended up being... pretty great actually! A SDCC without big studio presence turned out to be nice. Who would have thought? For a lot of us, it felt like the focus was actually on toys, since there was SO. MUCH. TOYS. It felt like more like a Toy Fair than a San Diego Comic Con. Anyone else feeling the same? What other tips would you have to deal with the Post Comic Con blues? Let us know in the comments! More news at 11:00... Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened! - Dr Seuss
  3. It's that time of the year again, right before the San Diego Comic Con, when every company announce SDCC Exclusives that seem to all 'must-get' items! For a week or two now, toy collectors worldwide have opened their favorite toy news websites and social media wincing, hoping they won't see a new announcement of an action figure that they will end up desperately wanting. It's a tough life! "I thought I'd be fine eating ramen noodles from Top Ramen until the end of the year, but after the Mondo announcements, it looks like I might have to go with the off brand version going forward." said a collector from Wisconsin. "It would be better if the San Diego Comic Con happened a bit later, so that we have time to save some money..." The timing of it all is really bad too, since there was first about $800 worth of NECA TMNT products that appeared unannounced at Target a few weeks ago, then Target had their Summer Geek Out, then pre-orders from MAFEX, G.I.Joe,... decided to drop all at once, plus the merch from the next TMNT movie, etc... The month of June has been terrible for savings accounts. More news at 11:00... Oh, and they will announce more upcoming toys there as well... *ToyFarce News is parody news for laughs and not meant to be taken seriously!
  4. Maybe it's something in the water but according to Deadline, Universal Pictures, Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm, Sony Pictures, HBO and Netflix will not be attending the San Diego Comic-Con beginning on July 19th. The no-shows are due to the uncertainty of the WGA strike that has failed to reach a deal with the AMPTP, and SAG-AFTRA and are still negotiating with the studios. The studios decided against planning a major presence in case the actors, as well as the writers, are unwilling to attend.
  5. Well... What a San Diego Comic Con, huh? Tons and tons of great stuff revealed, up until the last day! It's like if they decided to make up for the last 2 cancelled Comic Cons and concentrate all the fun and excitement from them into this one! It could even get pretty overwhelming at times, and ToyFarce has received tips from multiple sources that tons of collectors have asked for at least a few days off from work in order to be able to process the whole thing. It all started on preview night, on Wednesday, when the first pics from all the different booths started to appear online. The thrill was already there as we could see pics of our favorite brands' booths, and then, it kinda never stopped, until Sunday night, when they closed the doors down. The reveals, the panels, the announcements, everything! Even the most organized of collectors might have missed a few things, since there was so, so much. There were even hidden easter eggs on some of the brands' displays, for crying out loud! (Looking at you, Hasbro with the mechanic tools all over the glass displays, and NECA with the hidden Animated Last Ronin ninja turtle hidden behind a window in the street diorama!). In order to be able to function properly, we've heard that not only the attendees or toy bloggers, but collectors from all over the world needed to take some time off to rest and recover from all that, which is ironical, since we will all definitely need all the money for when those pre-orders and releases hit, so taking time off from work right now is not the best idea! What were your favorite reveals, announcements or photos from SDCC 2022? Let us know in the comments! More news at 11:00... I think I'm still processing Friday right now. I'm good with Preview Night and Day 1, so far...
  6. It's being reported by Variety that this year's San Diego Comic Con like last year will be held virtually due to the COVID pandemic. There are indications that the con organizers will try to organize some type of in-person event in November. Stay-tuned for more details to be revealed on all of this in the coming days.
  7. The LEGO Star Wars: Bespin Duel Set #75294 which was originally going to be released as a SDCC will now see release on September 1 at LEGO Shop@Home for $39.95. Source: The Brick Fan
  8. The final showdown of Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas has been captured in action-figure form, as Jack Skellington takes on that bag of bugs Oogie while Santa looks on. The deluxe lighted packaging features a working black light, so you can turn it on and watch the figures glow! Figures designed by Eamon O'Donoghue, sculpted by Cortes Studios. Limited to 3,000 pieces. You can pre-order these from our sponsor BigBadToyStore.com.
  9. While many conventions and event’s have already been canceled or postponed this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we still await word of what will be happening with the largest pop culture related convention in the world, San Diego Comic Con. An announcement for SDCC is expected as early as next week, and it’s not looking good. Already the Anaheim, CA based WonderCon convention, put on by the same people as San Diego, was canceled. It originally was to take place this weekend. Honestly, if you have been following the pandemic and its effects on our society since early March, I think you could probably have figured San Diego wasn’t going to happen this year, despite the convention organizers trying to put up a positive front until recently. I am sure there will be plenty of negative impact on the various industries and local businesses that have come to use this convention for their various purposes, and certainly there will be many convention goers out there who will be disappointed that San Diego won’t be happening this year. First let me just say I do feel sympathy for all of them. However I will tell you, I am not one of those people who will be terribly upset if the convention doesn’t happen this year. From the standpoint of my own small business that tries to cover the world of action figures, I will even be a bit relieved if it is canceled. You see I have been covering San Diego Comic Con for almost 20 years for my small network of websites that mostly focus on the world of action figures and collectibles, long before the convention was the huge juggernaut it is today. After all, aside from the New York Toy Fair, SDCC is the biggest event of the year to showcase new product from the various action figure companies including Hasbro, Mattel and many, many others. So it shouldn’t be a surprise that covering SDCC has been a must for a business like mine. Covering San Diego Comic Con has never been a cheap endeavor. In the early days, I also worked another full time job. So that meant I had to take a week off from that job to fly out from the east coast to the west coast, which was expensive in its own right. Then of course you had to get a hotel fairly close to the convention center. Even in those days, that also was not cheap — it’s much worse now. Still it was worth the effort and expense to do it, because the news generated lots of traffic for the websites. Each year however, especially in recent years, I can tell you that the benefits of covering this convention have gone down while the expenses and hassle have gone up. First, getting a decent hotel in remote proximity to the convention at any kind of affordable price for a small business like mine becomes more and more of a challenge. Even things like renewing your press badge each year seem to get more and more difficult. Still if the benefits where there, the hassle and expense would be worth it. Unfortunately, that’s not really the case. In large part, it’s the toy manufacturers themselves that have reduced the benefits of covering this convention. Each year they seem to take more and more steps to undercut sites like mine. Used to be the toy manufactures would release a few teasers of new product to the corporate media websites as exclusives, which was a little annoying, but understandable. There were still plenty of reveals to be had and opportunities for sites like mine to bring readers the detailed coverage those corporate sites weren’t willing to bother with, simply because it wasn’t worth their time. Each year though that becomes less and less. If it’s not the corporate media sites getting the exclusive reveals, then the manufacturers are putting it out on their own various social media platforms or websites well before we are given an opportunity to cover it ourselves. For the best example of this, just look at this past year’s Toy Fair where Hasbro exclusively live-streamed their panel product presentation on their Facebook page, not even allowing the stream to be embedded anywhere else. I honestly could have covered Hasbro’s Toy Fair reveals better and faster sitting at home at no additional expense than I was able to do sitting in their showroom. Even things like interviews can generally be done much better over conference calls than in the overcrowded and loud showrooms these conventions provide. I can tell you well before COVID-19 reared it’s ugly head and the possibility of SDCC not happening this year remotely entered my mind, I was seriously contemplating not attending this convention for the first time in 20 years. From a business stand point, I am sad to say that the cost of covering this event is no longer justifiable to the benefit it provides. I honestly can’t tell you what the overall impact of the convention not happening will be. I am sure it will be devastating to the local businesses in San Diego that depend on the increased foot traffic SDCC brings in. As for the product reveals and exclusives, I am sure those will still come from most companies. It just will likely be exclusively online. For those who don’t attend the convention, this probably will give them more opportunities to grab up those hard-to-get exclusives. As I said before, I truly feel for those who will be negatively impacted if SDCC doesn’t happen this year, but from the standpoint of my own personal business, I can tell you I am perfectly okay with not having to make the trip this year.
  10. Instagram @ajg232 With these SDCC exclusives Hasbro really seems to be celebrating the new guard and the old in the galaxy far far away. From the 6 inch Black Series Line we get the preview of the Sith Trooper from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. With a very strong follow up we’ll also be getting a look at a wonderful Luke Skywalker figure 3 Pack from the Vintage Collection 3.75 inch line. Both are great pieces for reasons both shared and unique. Sith Trooper: Star Wars The Black Series. Not much is known, as of yet, about this strikingly red stormtrooper. There is a bit of a blurb from Lucasfilm that can be found here and there on various fan sites. All that is to really be gleamed from it is that these stormtroopers are of a class all their own, under Kylo Ren, and that they have some sort of association with the Sith and the dark side of the force. On the surface there’s not much going on but it leaves fans with plenty to be excited about in the build up. For my money I’d say that throw away line in ep.7 about the First Order using a clone army might not be quite so insignificant. If the theorizing doesn’t hook you on this new trooper installment then maybe you can be won by sheer cool factor of which this figure has tons. Before you even get into the figure itself it should be said that it comes with an absolute arsenal of ranged and melee weapons alike. On the ranged side of things the new trooper comes with two medium sized rifles (One with a stock and one with a scope) along with what must be the sci fi fantasy equivalent of a mini gun. For beating up on all the Jedi scum our guy has a way cool reverse grip sword along with a similarly reverse gripped pincer of some kind. The only real negative in the accessories is how cumbersome the mini gun handle can be on whatever you deem to be the dominant hand. If you really want that guy toting full fire power the hand will be stretched to accommodate. Not the end of the world but a minor nitpick in this big pile of cool. One huge positive that might just be to my own taste is just how well he holds all the other weapons and that the tabbed leg holster functions perfectly. It’s very often the case that a figure can be pushed into the “great” category when the grip on the accessories is fully realized and when you don’t want it their there’s someplace to hold onto it. Now the accessories are very cool on this Sith Trooper but there’s something that’s a little more shocking on this figure. The articulation on this trooper far exceeds all expectations I had for an armored character. Did our guy drop his sword before he finished the fight? Well, it’s a good thing Hasbro made him a Tae Kwon Do black belt too. All joking aside the articulation is far better than I could’ve imagined. The torso joint isn’t revolutionary but to be honest if I tried to call it “limited” that just wouldn’t be an applicable adjective. The shoulders are equipped with butterfly joints. If you team this up with the deep cut single joint elbows all shapes and sizes of gun play are no problem. The legs are leaps and bounds better than I would’ve guessed by looking at the armor. The hips go way up just short of 90 degrees and the knees bend all the way back. Obviously, by the picture, the hips go way out to the side as well. The hands have a vertical gun style hinge the same way you’d want it in any trooper. Admittedly the head doesn’t move much with just a 360 horizontal swivel. The feet hinge in and out with a good ankle pivot the way all 20$ figure feet should nowadays. It should also be mentioned that the Sith Trooper doesn’t have anything particularly crazy going on in the scale department. He goes pretty well with everyone you’d want him to be in scale with. This figure can honestly be best summed up by the fact that it’s striking visually but secretly it’s impressively functional. If you want all the extra weapons I wouldn’t dissuade you from getting this SDCC version but when the standard rerelease comes through the articulation will still make that trooper into a whole lot of figure. Luke Skywalker 3 Pack: Star Wars The Vintage Collection Now, admittedly this pack holds a bit more nostalgia in many cases. Celebrating 3 iconic looks for arguably the greatest fantasy hero of all time this 3 pack is fantastic. What we have is Luke’s Death Star 1 stormtrooper disguise, the X-Wing pilot jumpsuit, and his Jedi Knight getup from the beginning of Return of the Jedi. Unlike the Sith Trooper just about everything that can be known is well known when it concerns the “son of Skywalker”. This is also my first look at the face printing technology being applied to the 3.75 inch figures and I have to say that it’s impeccable. Let’s start in simply with accessories. Each figure comes with a small set of their own accessories. Starting with trooper Luke he comes with the standard E11 blaster and the helmet to finish his armor. One thing that should be pointed out is that trooper Luke does have the holster for the E11 on the back of his belt and even though the thing is hollowed out and ready to go it really doesn’t seem like it's designed to actually hold the gun. With a good push it seems you can get the blaster a little less than halfway in. A little annoying but it’s small potatoes for a figure this good. Next we’ll look at X-Wing Luke. Very simply, he comes with a simple DL-44 blaster that he grips perfectly and his wonderful pilot helmet that we’ll talk more about in just a bit. Now the gun doesn’t have a spot to be holstered so that’s a bit annoying but nothing truly detrimental. Now what’s great about his pilot helmet is that it’s made of a very rubbery adaptive plastic. It makes the helmet unintentionally modular and great for other figures therein. If you wanna take your ROTJ Luke and do the 30 seconds of screen time with Luke leaving Tatooine to seek out Yoda on Dagobah, for the 2nd time then look no further. It’s very doable. Speaking of ROTJ Luke let’s talk about him. He’s the only Luke of the 3 to come with a lightsaber (His green saber to be specific). In addition to this he has the blaster he yanked off one of Jabba’s goons along with what is possibly the best soft goods I’ve seen Hasbro produce to date. The blaster fits in his right hand with no problem. The lightsaber goes in both without issue. Luke’s Jedi cloak is stitched in some way, shape, or form that makes it hug to his head in the exact right way. It’s truly impressive. Just to get it out of the way the faces on all three of these Lukes are magnificent. The old time GI Joe faces are officially a thing of the past. In terms of articulation each stands in a category all their own. All have good ball jointed heads with the exception of X-Wing Luke with a two sided ball joint and some magnificent head movement as opposed to being simply good. All have tried and true hinged shoulders with good reliably deep single joint elbows. All have hinged hands with the exception of trooper Luke who’s relying only on the 360 degree swivel. Both X-Wing and trooper Luke have good deep torso articulation with the feature being absent on ROTJ Luke though it’s admittedly not very missed. All but Pilot Luke have a waist swivel. Now getting down to the hips They all start the same where it’s a rotating hinge that you move in the right direction and then hinge in your preferred direction. Exceptionally, Pilot Luke also sports a slightly clumsy thigh swivel. Beyond that all 3 figures go down to some single joint knees and hinged feet. On the whole very well articulated. Some particularly good articulation comes from trooper Luke. The next time Vader is looking to aggressively hide an apprentice’s existence it’s important to note that trooper Luke does fine with some Gears of War crouches. Hasbro also made him a Tae Kwon Do black belt... for the good it will do him. For scale there’s not much to be surprised about with these 3 figures. Here we have the 3 up against a c3po from the Revenge of the Sith line along with a 5 inch Batman and a Pizza Spider-Man. Besides some points of articulation there’s not much that’s shocking when it comes to these 3 figures. All the same these 3 figures are great and classic in all the right ways. If you ever see any of these figures either single packed or in this great 3 pack I would highly recommend that you do yourself the favor.
