  1. Sources from within New Line are informing Deadline that the studio has given the greenlight for a sequel to the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie. Sources are claiming that Simon McQuoid is set to return as director as the first movie opened at the number one spot at the box office and brought people back to movie theaters post-pandemic. The movie also ranks among the top feature titles ever on HBO Max since the platform launched. The sequel is being written by Jeremy Slater and based on the global video game phenomenon created by Ed Boon and John Tobias.
  2. New Line has hired Jeremy Slater to script Mortal Kombat 2, the sequel to the 2021 Mortal Kombat release. Slater was head writer on the Marvel/Disney+ series Moon Knight, which stars Oscar Isaac, Ethan Hawke, and Gaspard Ulliel. The 2021 release was based on the video game phenomenon created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. The movie was released simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max in April 2021 during the pandemic, opening at No. 1 at the box office and ranking among the top feature titles on HBO Max since the platform launched. The film was directed by Simon McQuoid, who produced with Todd Garner, E. Bennett Walsh, and Wan. Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Joe Taslim, Mehcad Brooks, Ludi Lin, Tadanobu Asano, and Chin Han headed the cast. Source: Deadline
  3. Warner Bros. appears to be standing strong by their announcement with the new date change for New Line's Mortal Kombat movie by releasing a new teaser movie poster. The new date is now April 16th, 2021 instead of January 15th and the release will also be shown in theaters, HBO Max and IMAX theaters.
  4. Wu Assassins star Lewis Tan, The Meg‘s Jessica McNamee and Josh Lawson have joined the lead ensemble of the Mortal Kombat feature at New Line. Tan has been cast in an undisclosed role while McNamee will step into the role of Sonya Blade and Lawson will portray Kano. The current cast includes Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jackson “Jax” Bridges, Sisi Stringer as Mileena, Joe Taslim as Sub Zero and Ludi Lin as Liu Kang. The plot for the movie adaptation of the popular martial arts video game franchise has been kept under wraps, but will be a follow up from the 1997's Mortal Kombat: Annihilation sequel from the 1992 movie adaptation. This feature will be Simon McQuoid directorial debut from a script written by Greg Russo. James Wan and Todd Garner are producing, with Larry Kasanoff, E. Bennett Walsh, Michael Clear, and Sean Robins executive producing. The movie is set to be released on March 5, 2021. Source: Deadline
  5. New Line has hired Greg Russo to write the script for the movie version of the classic 1978 Taito arcade game Space Invaders. Warner Bros purchased the rights to the game rights several years ago. Weed Road Pictures’ Akiva Goldsman is producing alongside Safehouse Pictures partners Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell. No details on the movie plot details but in the game, a series of blocky aliens descended from the top of the screen to the bottom, and players basically blasted them until their thumbs cramped, or the invaders succeeded in overwhelming the slow-triggered defender of earth. Source: Deadline
  6. Are movie studios starting to shy away from the San Diego Comic-Con? The question comes to mind as Deadline is reporting that movie studios such as Sony, Universal, Warner Bros. DC film studio and Lionsgate will not be attending the convention. Studios currently set to be attending are Disney/Marvel, Paramount and New Line. No reason for Universal, Warner Bros DC film studio or Lionsgate to not be attending but Sony does have their hands full with Spider-Man: Far From Opening opening next week and Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood upcoming on July 26th. Their promo teams have events set up for the whole year with Zombieland 2: Double Tap (October 18th), Charlie’s Angels (November 15th), The Grudge (Janaury 3rd), the comic-book feature adaptation Bloodshot starring Vin Diesel (February 21st), Blumhouse’s Fantasy Island (February 28th) and, farther out, Marvel’s Morbius (July 31st, 2020).
