  9. Mattel is back at it with another movie wave of 6” DC Multiverse figures, this time for the upcoming Aquaman movie opening in theaters on December 14, 2018. This wave consists of four figures and one Collect-And-Connect. The regular figures include Orb, Black Manta, Mera and Aquaman featured with a more classic look in the orange shirt and green pants. The Collect-And-Connect figure for this wave is a Trench Warrior, a nasty looking sea-creature army builder type. The packaging for these figures is the same we have seen with other recent Multiverse releases with the blue window boxes. A brief bio for each character is on the back. The figures continue to show design improvements over older Multiverse figures with improved articulation and sculpting detail. Most the figures have ankle pivot and double-jointed knees. They also feature the improved crotch articulation, no longer featuring those outdated side-hinge joints. The face sculpts for both Mera and Aquaman are much improved over the previous Justice League movie versions. Black Manta is probably the overall coolest looking of the bunch, featuring what looks like a hyped-up scuba outfit with a pretty comic book accurate helmet. I am disappointed they didn’t incorporate the same kind of red translucent plastic eyes as they did with the SDCC comic book version released earlier this year. Aquaman looks good overall but I wish they had painted the shoulder joints the same color as the rest of his shirt. The different shade of paint stands out noticeably on the figure. I like that they included the scar on the left eyebrow, and the sculpting detailing on the shirt for the chainmail and the texturing on the legs look good. Mera also has nice texturing on her outfit, and I like the metallic-looking paints they used on her. She is more limited in articulation than the others, only having single-hinged knees and no ankle pivot. Orb has nice sculpting details on his outfit, and I especially like the way his cape and helmet look. The pieces on his faceplate that stick out and the fin on the top of his helmet are made with a rubbery material so they won’t snap off, however they might come out of the package a little wrapped looking. Heating the material with a hairdryer likely will help straighten the fins out if that ends up being an issue for you. The Trench Warrior is very cool looking with nice sculpting and paint applications. I really like the head sculpt and that they gave it an articulated jaw. The three-clawed fingers on each hand also look menacing. The only real downside is that they made a character who I am pretty sure is part of an army to collect-and-connect which will make it hard to get multiples for those who want an army of these guys. For accessories, Mera has the most with a basic spear-like weapon and alternate hands that mimic her water-controlling abilities. I believe these are the same kind of accessories the previous Justice League movie Mera came with which was offered as an Amazon exclusive. Aquaman and Orb both come with Tridents with some nice paint applications on them, and Black Manta comes with a sword that is black. Manata also has a non-removable blade on his left arm that is made from a rubber material, so like Orb’s mask you may need to apply heat to straighten it out if it gets warped in the package. It’s good to see Mattel making improvements with their Multiverse line. However being completely honest, these figures still are a bit lacking in some areas like articulation when compared to similiar scale super hero action figure lines. That said, I will say there are enough positives here to warrant checking out if you are an Aquaman fan or a fan of the DC movies. These figures have started to see limited releases through select e-tailers and should start seeing a wider release in the coming weeks. Check out more images for all these figures below in our GALLERY!
  10. Mattel, Inc. announced the creation of Mattel Films, a new division of the Company focused on developing and producing motion pictures based on the Company's iconic and globally-recognized franchises. Academy Award-nominated producer Robbie Brenner has been appointed to lead Mattel Films as Executive Producer, reporting to Ynon Kreiz, Mattel's Chairman and CEO. Robbie Brenner will oversee Mattel Films, developing motion pictures based on Mattel’s iconic franchises. Mattel is free to develop studio options on such properties as Hot Wheels, American Girl, Fisher-Price and Thomas & Friends itself. Mattel Films then plans to find studio partners to produce the movies. Mattel and Sony had been developing a live-action Barbie movie, set to star Anne Hathaway, for 2020 release, but according to Mattel, that option has lapsed and that project is not moving forward. "Mattel is home to one of the world's greatest portfolios of beloved franchises, and the creation of Mattel Films will allow us to unlock significant value across our IP," said Mr. Kreiz. "Robbie is a gifted storyteller and a highly respected filmmaker with deep relationships in entertainment. She is the perfect leader to bring our celebrated brands to life." "Generations of children around the world have grown up with deep emotional connections to Mattel's brands and characters," said Ms. Brenner. "There are so many stories to be told and so many imaginations to be captured by these iconic brands, and I look forward to working with Ynon and his team to do so." Ms. Brenner was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture for Dallas Buyers Club, and her film Burden was a 2018 Sundance Film Festival Audience Award winner. She has held multiple leadership roles in the entertainment industry for the last two decades, including Partner and President of the film division at The Firm, as well as President of Production at Relativity Media. Ms. Brenner also ran the classics division at Davis Entertainment, and prior to this, she held Senior Vice President roles at both Twentieth Century Fox and Miramax. Ms. Brenner oversaw the production of dozens of movies, including Academy Award-winning The Fighter; the Snow White Adaptation Mirror Mirror, starring Julia Roberts; the 3-D epic, Immortals; the highly successful Nicholas Sparks book adaptions Dear John and Safe Haven. Ms. Brenner was also pivotal in the acquisition of the Sundance documentary Catfish, which became a cultural sensation, as well as Joseph Gordon-Levitt's directorial debut, Don Jon. In 2015, in recognition of her pioneering work, Ms. Brenner was invited to join the executive branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Additional Sources: THR
  11. The big Masters of the Universe themed convention Power-Con is taking place this weekend out in Los Angles, CA and Pixel-Dan is on hand who has already gotten a scoop about the possibility of Mattel's Classic ThunderCats figures making a return. As we told you earlier, Mattel is on hand this weekend for the con and has some new Masters of the Universe product on hand that they are showing off, but apparently they also brought some ThunderCats stuff with them as well with these prototypes of Classic ThunderCats Jaga and Grune figures. According to Dan, Mattel has informed him that they do have plans for these which will likely be revealed later this weekend during the convention which officially kicks off later today. You may recall Mattel began doing Masters of the Universe style Classic ThunderCats figures a couple years ago but then canceled the line after only releasing one wave which included Wiley Kit, Wiley Kat, Lino-O, Jackalman, Pumyra & Mumm-Ra in Mummy Form. The abrupt cancellation of the line understandably angered many fans who were looking to at least be able to complete the core team of ThunderCats and villains. Rumors then circulated that Super7 who took over the Masters of the Universe license from Mattel might take over but then never did. With a new ThunderCats animated series which is done in a totally different style than the original show that is clearly made for kids coming from Warner Bros, it may be Mattel has decided to push forward with the Cats again, however I feel that if Mattel wants to get many fans who felt left out to dry after the initial cancellation was done on board with these, they better plan on doing at the very least the remaining core team members (Tygra and Cheetara) in the first wave, otherwise I doubt fans will bother figuring the line will be canceled again before those characters are produced. Let us know in the comments if you will be on board for new Mattel ThunderCats Classic figures in the comments section below whether they do Tygra and Cheetara initially or not. See Dan's video and images below where he talks about his initial conversation about these figures below and check back throughout the weekend for more coverage from Power-Con where we should get more details about this stuff.
  12. CNN reports that Mattel will be laying off around 2200 employee's in an effort to save money after suffering loses in large part due to the closing of Toys R' Us stores this year. They will also be closing all factories in Mexico. Most of the job layoffs will be in back-office and support roles. Sales fell 11% between April and June for the company however it wasn't all bad for the company as Barbie sales grew 12%, and Hot Wheels sales were up 21%. Jurassic World products also sold pretty good for the company.
  13. We saw a prototype for this figure at SDCC last month and now we have official images from Mattel for the WWE Series 90 Ronda Rousey figure which is slated for an online release in early November and then brick and mortar retailers shortly after.
  14. Shown below are two upcoming sets from Mattel based on the new Aquaman Movie. One set features a 6" Aquaman figure with a 18" Warrior Shark that he can ride on and the second set features Vulko with a Hammerhead Shark. These sets include basis 6" figures which means they are a bit smaller and less articulated than the Multiverse figures but the sharks should work with Multiverse figures as well. Amazon has both sets currently listed with an October 1 release date and the Aquman set costs $29.99 and the Vulko set costs $19.99.
  15. Victoria's Cantina takes a look at the new Jurassic World Grab 'N Growl Indoraptor from Mattel. Check out images for this figure below in our GALLERY!
  16. This weekend kicks off the 2018 Masters of the Universe Power-Con convention which is taking place in Los Angles, and while things don't officially start until tomorrow we already have a look via Pixel-Dan at some new product from Mattel who will be on hand this year. Shown below are Megaconstrux mini-figures which includes Scare-glow, Man-At-Arms, Stratos Beastman and Teela. The Wind Raider was on display as well. Also shown are new Jumbo figures which includes, He-Man, Adam, Anti-He-Man, Wonder Bread He-Man and some kind of green Horde version of He-Man which I am not familiar with. Look for more details on these to be announced later this weekend. It also looks like Mattel might be promoting She-Ra and He-Man dolls this weekend as well. Check out this video from Dan. For you Super7 fans, not to worry they will be on hand this weekend as well. Thanks to Dan for the images which you can check out below and stay-tuned for more details as they develop throughout the weekend.
  17. Review By: Robert Greenwood Before we do our review, we want to take a moment to remember Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart who passed away on 8/13/18. He was one half of one of the most iconic tag teams pre-Attitude Era, The Hart Foundation. When the music hits, you just have to dance and make sure you take the perfect selfie! Thanks to Mattel, we have our look at Breezdango, the tag team of Tyler Breeze and Fandango. The "Fashion Police" are here in Series 61 of WWE Elite. Tyler Breeze and Fandango have been gaining so much popularity amongst the WWE universe as of late that seeing them in the newest wave of the Elite Series was more of just a matter of when. These two Elite Series figures are packed with the build-a-display, which are simply a stand with a cool background image of each wrestler. Now being these guys are tag team partners, you would think that they are perfect to pick up together, but honestly, each separately was the smarter way to go. Tyler is more than an accomplished singles wrestler, his time in NXT gave him a decent group following. His figure has all that should be expected for an Elite figure. His face perfectly sculpted with the "duck lips" look is absolutely genius because how else do you take a selfie? You can't have Tyler without his signature selfie stick and cellphone that is attached to the end. Both figures come with the Fashion Police shirt that simple velcro in the back. They also get sunglasses and sport the "official Fashion Police" caps. But with Fandango, his sculpt of his face isn't as exact as with Tyler. Sure you can tell it’s him, but it's not as accurate as it could be. Fandango seems super jacked, but the paint apps on his pants really capture his ring gear. Nonetheless, you will need them both to take down ugly fashion trends in the WWE. Maybe even have them give a summons to AJ Styles for the "soccer mom hair" he is always sporting. These two Elite figures are a must buy due into no small part to not only bolster the roster of tag teams, but add some much needed fashion in the modern era of WWE. This figure is currently available for pre-order by Mattel on the Amazon SummerSlam Section. Thanks to Mattel for providing this figure free of charge for review. Check out images for the Elite Series wave 61 figures which include Tyler Breeze and Tyler Breeze and Fandango below.
  18. Review By: Robert Greenwood "The Phenomenal One" AJ Styles has had a storied career in professional wrestling and he has now garnered more respect and attention from the "casual" audience. He is simply one of the best in the business right now and his Elite Series 61 figure represents why he is the G.O.A.T. (Greatest Of All Time) at what he does. Series 61 is the build-a-display set which includes a base and card back so you can display your action figure as if it was a high end collectible. AJ is boxed in the typical Elite packaging and the window display shows pretty much the whole figure and his one accessory, an extra hood. The back of the box shows off a brief description about AJ putting up his United States Championship against Tye Dillenger and Baron Corbin. This figure is designed to represent AJ Styles’ entrance look. Yet even though the package talks about AJ defending his US Championship, it does not include the title belt as an available accessory. The figure does what it must do and that is: look absolutely amazing! The sculpt looks like AJ from his tattoos on his right side of his rib cage (his initials AJ and his kids’ birthdates) to his "soccer mom" hairdo. Which, no matter how you make it look, it’s just 100% AJ. Of course, with the Elite Series, you get full range of articulation, which is ideal for a wrestling superstar like himself. With these added points of articulation, this figure can definitely live up to the high flying technician that is “The Phenomenal One.” I want to briefly talk about the hood accessory. At first glance, it seems maybe a bit silly or cheap, but once I added it to the figure, I ended up liking its design more. It simply snaps in and becomes a hood he can have over his head as his music plays then stands at the top of the stage or snap in the hood that is sculpted to be down so when his music kicks in, AJ can lower it down and head to the ring to do what he does best. Either way, it works. Actually this might be better than if Mattel used a fabric hoodie. Overall this figure is just...(wait for it) phenomenal as is AJ himself. If I had to pick some negative aspects, I guess we could have done without the hoodie and instead included the US title. And the build-a-display isn't a bad thing, but would have benefited having something more like a static image from his TitanTron entrance. With all that aside, I am honestly an AJ fan from his days in TNA to his time in NJPW and, of course, how well he has excelled here in the WWE. The figure is a must buy and, being that it’s Summer Slam weekend, the AJ Styles figure will first be released during this time on the Amazon Treasure Truck in Brooklyn, NY. So, if you are going to be in NYC and attend Summer Slam, try and get him at the Amazon Treasure Truck! This figure is currently available for pre-order by Mattel on the Amazon SummerSlam Section. Thanks to Mattel for providing this figure free of charge for review. Check out images for the Elite Series wave 61 figures which includes AJ Styles below.
  19. Review By: Robert Greenwood The man known as KO has been a fighter for his entire career. He is, by typical fans, not the ideal look of a wrestler. Yet not only has he succeeded in winning numerous title reigns, but has been a part of some amazing story arcs in professional wrestling history. With that in mind, let’s take a look at Kevin Owens’ own Elite figure. If you have been reading these reviews, you already know what to expect from the packaging and the included build-a-display set, so I won't waste time on that. The real question is how cool is this figure? And the answer is that KO is just TOO SWEET!!!!! Wait, sorry, got a little out of control there. This figure is a cut above the rest. His face represents KO at his most vicious. This is the Fight Owens Fight figure, the KO, the man who came to Raw and took over (more or less)! The smug look on his face says it all. This sculpt really resembles Kevin, even including his tattoos on his shoulder and left forearm perfectly. His massive structure might be a bit bigger than I believe him to be, but the figure is no doubt Kevin Owens. He comes packed with two great accessories. First, a microphone. Kevin is an amazing talker in the business and can stir up so much just by talking. His second is the United States Championship title and it is a beautiful piece. My only gripe about it is that Kevin can't wear it around his waist, but most wrestlers tend to just place it over their shoulders. If there is one thing I really don't like about the Elite Series Kevin Owens is the shirt they have him wear. It's made of a soft plastic and it looks just bad on him. Personally, I would have preferred a paint app making it look like he was wearing a shirt or an actual fabric shirt like Tyler Breeze and Fandango came packed with. All in all, it's a great figure and having him packed with the belt helps tell better story. This figure is currently available for pre-order by Mattel on the Amazon SummerSlam Section. Thanks to Mattel for providing this figure free of charge for review. Check out images for the Elite Series wave 61 figures which includes Kevin Owens below.
  20. Who is a part of the Series 61 set? Who? Who? Who? None other than Mr Booty-O’s himself, Big E. What can we say about the “Powerhouse” of The New Day? Well firstly, this figure is without a doubt energetic to a fault. Big E either looks utterly scared or extremely psychotic. Trying to capture an expression that is only seen on the packaging might seem a bit unnecessary. Maybe in the right angle, this face is something Big E would make? Face scans like this make me wish this was on a figure that would be more gimmicky, something like the Retro figures line. Not so much on an Elite Series. Or, have him packed with a second normal expression. The entrance gear is identical to what Big E wears and looks perfect on him. He is massive, as rightfully he should be. His arms seem a bit thin, since Big E is a beast and his arms are no joke in real life. The paint apps are great and it’s important to have Big E in the Elite collection. New day is one of the most over factions in wrestling today, so Big E will be a most sought after figure. His ring gear has so much flexibility and super vibrant, just like all of the members of The New Day have. His build-a-display is fine, but like I've mentioned before, they connect together and it seems to be a bit of a waste of time to connect to make the artwork come together. I will once again state, I wish they had either official logos on the display or a static image from the TitanTtron. Also, if you don't get all the figures, you will have an incomplete background. Other than that, Big E was so much fun to photograph, even with the silly expression. Kids and adult collectors will have more fun playing with and/or displaying this figure. He is well made, perfect paint apps and a key member of WWE Tag Team Division and, I believe, a figure you will not want to pass up. This figure is currently available for pre-order by Mattel on the Amazon SummerSlam Section. Thanks to Mattel for providing this figure free of charge for review. Check out images for the Elite Series wave 61 figures which include Big E below. Follow Rob on social media: Instagram: alternativemindz Twitter: @ AltMindz

  22. Review By: Robert Greenwood Today I take a look at the new Walmart exclusive wave of WWE Elite Series Flashback figures from Mattel which include Shawn Michaels, Razor Ramon and Alundra Blayze. Each figure comes with a piece to re-create Shawn Michaels' Heartbreak Hotel Interview set. WWE Elite Flashback series: "The Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels by Mattel They think he's cute and they know he's sexy. The heartbreaker, the show stopper, founding member of the Kliq, the Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels, aka Michael Hickenbottom, is represented here in his pre-DX and Post Rockers look. Mattel has been on a non-stop streak with no signs of stopping and this flashback series, which builds the titular character Shawn Michaels interview set the "Heartbreak Hotel," is just astounding to look at. This Elite flashback has captured not only the physical look of HBK's face, but his entire outfit has been faithfully recreated in toy form. The little nuances from his chains that connect the vest, his removable sunglasses, it's all here. He comes packed with the curtain and Heartbreak Hotel sign to help flush out the interview set. With him and the addition of the Flashback Razor Ramon (apart of this set), you can now relive their famous ladder match for the WWF World Intercontinental Championship belt. Is there anything negative to say about this figure? Yes, and this is as nitpicky as can be. When you remove his sunglasses, he has two small holes on either side of his temple. Honestly, that is a stretch, but finding fault with a toy that depicts the wrestler as he looked at that moment in his career, I really can't find anything off (maybe the face sculpt isn't photo realistic? But, that would be pushing it a bit.) When people think of Shawn Michaels, this is the Shawn most attuide fans will remember. The Shawn that lost his smile, the one who destroyed kayfabe by hugging it out with heels and faces alike in the middle of MSG. Shawn the epitome of arrogance. The over-the-top renegade who cared only for himself and put on instant classics in the ring. "The Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels has now come home to collectors and fans alike. Mattel has hit high expectations with a very important figure in the annals of wrestling. A must buy and the only HBK figure that a collector will need. WWE Elite Flashback Series Doink the Clown by Mattel Send in the clowns. The master of carnival carnage has made the Elite treatment as part of the Heartbreak Hotel interview set. What can I possibly say about Doink the Clown? Mostly that he was played by at least two different wrestlers over the years and had a decent push during the time before the Attuide Era. Then, when WWE let most gimmicks go, he was pretty much gone. As far as the figure is concerned, he is as basic as can be. Sure, he is an Elite figure and he comes with all the articulation that should be expected for such. Yet, I feel there are a few factors that make this figure not as exciting as others. First of all, his face sculpt is nice, but it honestly doesn't look like Doink (maybe just a little). It looks more like a generic clown-like wrestling figure. I feel that he would work better as a clown-themed thug to place with a Joker action figure, which wouldn't be a bad idea if fans are looking to make army builders using Doink as lackeys. For any Joker figure, it would work great. Unfortunately, his only accessory is the leg lamp from the Heartbreak Hotel set, which is really a shame. If they could have added crazy unique clown themed items, this figure would have been given a breath of freshness and potentially a perfect figure to own. As for now, the only real reason people may buy him is to get said leg lamp, which is sort of wasteful. I love the Elite series and how Mattel takes big steps in having a very robust collection of wrestlers from every era of WWE, but some figures are a hard sell and without the leg lamp, Doink may not be a figure many people rush out to buy. WWE Elite Flashback Series Razor Ramon from Mattel The "Bad Guy" of the pre-attitude era makes his jump into the Elite ranks as part of the Heartbreak Hotel interview set. Razor Ramon, aka Scott Hall, came to WWE and crafted his gimmick based on the film Scarface. He was a greasy tough guy who took on anyone who came before him. The figure is, by far, the centerpiece of this series. A stand out figure for collectors and fans alike. Where do we start with? How about that he wears an actual fabric shirt modeled after his over- the-top Hawaiian style shirts he would where to the ring. He is covered in gold chains that would make Mr. T almost show respect. His face is sculpted exactly as he looked during the early 90s with the gelled back hair into a greasy ponytail and he is chewing on a toothpick, which is a signature part of his look. The articulation of Razor is by far the best of this whole line and I almost wished that Shawn Michaels had as much as this Razor figure. This figure looks, feels and poses like the "Bad Guy" himself and is a must own piece in the whole WWE Elite Flashback series. Only wish it included the Intercontinental title and a ladder so fans can recreate the famous Wrestlemania 10 ladder match with the Show Stopper, Shawn Michaels. WWE Elite Flashback Series Alundra Blayze Before today's modern woman's revolution and years before the term "Divas," the WWE had one of their best and brightest stars to come. She would have potentially changed women's wrestling after stigmas of it being a niche market, something almost as an afterthought. This, unfortunately, did not happen. Her name was Alundra Blayze. But after holding the women's title for 342 days she left and did one of the most controversial things ever broadcasted on professional wrestling. By jumping to the WCW and throwing her WWE (WWF) Championship Title in to a trash can on a live broadcast at a rival wrestling show. She was, for the most part, blacklisted and basically faded away to the history books. Years later, Alundra is now a Hall of Famer and has come out as an Elite figure, but is she worth the money? As far as the sculpt, she just passes representing what Alundra actually looks like. Her look is stylized and maybe a complete reuse of tooling, but it holds up and since she is a part of the Heartbreak Hotel interview collection, she will be needed to complete the set. The figure has a ton of articulation, but for some reason her upper body on the review sample seems to not want to hold a straight-up stance (she tends to lean a bit to either direction). She is packed with her Title and a piece of the Heartbreak Hotel interview set. The figure is a solid Elite style figure but it's missing the subtle details that would make someone scream "I need that Alundra Blayze figure in my life! " Yet, making her a part of the Heartbreak Hotel interview set helps to ease a buyer into owning a figure of a wrestler who never got the recognition she honestly deserved. Now fans can create dream matches that weren't possible and may never happen in real life. Thanks to the folks at Mattel for sending us these figures free of charge so we could review them. 24. Review By: Robert Greenwood He came from 200,000 leagues from the bottom of the sea on a tidal wave from the South China Sea to the sands of Waikiki. A predator and a scavenger of the Seven Seas with a taste of destruction in his jaws, he is the biggest maneater alive. Heroes of WCW tremble in fear when the first monster of the dungeon of doom is near. SHARK ATTACK SHARK ATTACK SHARK ATTACK!!!!! Mattel has once again delivered on one amazing and unique wrestling figure. The Shark aka John Tenta. As figures go, this Elite has captured not only the goofy/cartoonish look of the outfit and facepaint but honestly captured John "the Shark" Tenta's face to the T. Absolutely authentic to this future Hall of Famer, from his ponytail to his body structure, this is from heel to forehead the Shark! Let's go over the actual meat and potatoes. He comes packed with only one accessory which is a removable headband that has inscribed on it "Attack." His wrestling gear is decked out in garish shark theme elements from his pants having literal sharks on it to his abdomen sporting an open "Jaws" inspired shark mouth that says Shark. His right forearm band is marked with Shark attack. You get the feeling they needed to push the "Shark" elements just a bit. The figure retains all the articulation you have come to expect for the Elite series, which makes him an ideal figure to display or play with. Especially if you have a Hulk Hogan figure for him to face off with. As an Elite figure goes, it's a solid 10 but as a character, The Shark will only appeal to either fans of the old days of WCW or wrestling action figure completest. Either way, Mattel has consistently delivered on not only mainstream superstars but obscure one dimensional gimmicks like The Shark. Hopefully, we can complete the dungeon of doom and recreate one of the most off-the-rails story arcs in professional wrestling history. This figure is available now on Target.com. DPCI# 087-06-0429. Thanks to the folks for providing us this figure so we could review it for you guys.
