  4. CBS Television Studios has created a global franchise group that will manage and maximize the expansion of the "Star Trek" brand beyond the traditional boundaries of linear broadcasting and streaming. This new business unit reports to David Stapf, President of CBS Television Studios. Leading the new team is Veronica Hart, Executive Vice President, "Star Trek" Global Franchise Management, who will manage the "Star Trek" global brand strategy to support the content development plans being developed within CBS and under the stewardship of Alex Kurtzman. The unit's goal is to invigorate and broaden the "Star Trek" fan community through additional branding opportunities, such as podcasts, a reinvigorated StarTrek.com and new digital spaces, consumer products and gaming, as well as live experiential events and global attractions. These endeavors to further grow the brand are designed to complement the Studio's expansion of the "Star Trek" universe, which now includes two live-action series, two animated projects and multiple "shorts." The growing "Star Trek" universe for television includes a new animated "Trek" series from writers Kevin and Dan Hageman for Nickelodeon; STAR TREK: DISCOVERY and STAR TREK: SHORT TREKS, a series of short stories tied to DISCOVERY and the overall "Star Trek" universe; the new untitled "Star Trek" series featuring Sir Patrick Stewart reprising his iconic role as Jean-Luc Picard; STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS from Mike McMahan ("Rick and Morty"), an animated series targeted at mature audiences; and a new "Star Trek" project based on "Section 31," which is in development with Michelle Yeoh attached to star. With the exception of the new Nickelodeon edition, these series are presented on CBS' streaming service, CBS All Access, in the U.S. In addition to Hart, the franchise team includes: John Van Citters, VP, "Star Trek" Brand Development, who will work within CBS and across the industry as brand experts while leading the implementation of initiatives and programs; Yasmin Elachi, Director of "Star Trek" Content, in charge of creating, relaunching and maintaining the new StarTrek.com along with overseeing all aspects of "Star Trek" social media in order to present a cohesive online brand; and Gabrielle Oliff, Director of Global Franchise Management Operations, who will focus on executing franchise initiatives and managing the review analytics and preparing presentations for cross-company communication. All are incredibly knowledgeable about the "Star Trek" universe, including legacy, current and future iterations of the series. "Veronica and her team are not only gifted brand strategists and veteran consumer products executives, they are also experts on the 'Star Trek' canon," said Stapf. "We are excited to launch this new business unit because the brand has an enormously rabid fan base, and we look forward to expanding its reach even further." "As we expand the Trekverse, Veronica's team and Secret Hideout are dedicated to broadening 'Star Trek's' brand reach by amplifying its core values globally: empowerment, inclusion, imagination, and above all, the exceptional storytelling that's inspired generations of fans," said Alex Kurtzman. The new franchise group will be based out of Alex Kurtzman's Secret Hideout Productions in Santa Monica, Calif. Kurtzman, who is under an overall deal at the Studio, is the executive producer of the various "Star Trek" series.

It was announced that Michelle Paradise will join Alex Kurtzman as co-showrunner of STAR TREK: DISCOVERY's third season. In addition to his role as showrunner of STAR TREK: DISCOVERY, Kurtzman will continue to oversee the expansion of the growing "Star Trek" universe for CBS Studios. "Michelle joined us midway through season two and energized the room with her ferocious knowledge of 'Trek,'" said Alex Kurtzman. "Her grasp of character and story detail, her drive and her focus have already become essential in ensuring the 'Trek' legacy, and her fresh perspective always keeps us looking forward. I'm proud to say Michelle and I are officially running STAR TREK: DISCOVERY together." "The massive success of STAR TREK: DISCOVERY's second season launch exceeded our expectations in both driving subscriber growth and generating a phenomenal response from 'Star Trek' fans," said Julie McNamara, Executive Vice President, Original Content, CBS All Access. "With Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise at the helm, we look forward to continuing STAR TREK: DISCOVERY's journey, growing the 'Star Trek' franchise on CBS All Access and bringing fans new 'Star Trek' stories for many years to come." Prior to serving as co-executive producer on STAR TREK: DISCOVERY's second season, Michelle Paradise was co-executive producer on the television series "The Originals" on The CW. She also wrote for the series "Rogue" on the Audience network and The CW's "Hart of Dixie." Additionally, Paradise created, wrote and starred in the MTV/Logo series "Exes & Ohs." After answering a distress signal from the U.S.S. Enterprise, season two of STAR TREK: DISCOVERY finds the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery joining forces with Captain Christopher Pike on a new mission to investigate seven mysterious red signals and the appearance of an unknown being called the Red Angel. While the crew must work together to unravel their meaning and origin, Michael Burnham is forced to face her past with the return of her estranged brother, Spock. STAR TREK: DISCOVERY season two cast members include Sonequa Martin-Green (Commander Michael Burnham), Michelle Yeoh (Philippa Georgiou), Doug Jones (Commander Saru), Shazad Latif (Ash Tyler), Anson Mount (Captain Christopher Pike), Anthony Rapp (Lt. 6. Executive Producer Alex Kurtzman and Sir Patrick Stewart surprised fans today at the Star Trek Las Vegas convention with the news that he will be returning to the iconic role of "Jean-Luc Picard" for a new "Star Trek" series coming to CBS All Access. The new series will follow the next chapter of Picard's life. Quote from Executive Producer Alex Kurtzman: "With overwhelming joy, it's a privilege to welcome Sir Patrick Stewart back to the 'Star Trek' fold. For over 20 years, fans have hoped for the return of Captain Jean-Luc Picard and that day is finally here. We can't wait to forge new ground, surprise people, and honor generations both new and old." Quote from Patrick Stewart: "I will always be very proud to have been a part of 'Star Trek: The Next Generation,' but when we wrapped that final movie in the spring of 2002, I truly felt my time with 'Star Trek' had run its natural course. It is, therefore, an unexpected but delightful surprise to find myself excited and invigorated to be returning to Jean-Luc Picard and to explore new dimensions within him. Seeking out new life for him, when I thought that life was over. During these past years, it has been humbling to hear many stories about how 'The Next Generation' brought people comfort, saw them through difficult periods in their lives or how the example of Jean-Luc inspired so many to follow in his footsteps, pursuing science, exploration and leadership. I feel I'm ready to return to him for the same reason - to research and experience what comforting and reforming light he might shine on these often very dark times. I look forward to working with our brilliant creative team as we endeavor to bring a fresh, unexpected and pertinent story to life once more."
  7. CBS All Access today announced a two-season order for STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS, a new half-hour animated comedy series developed by Emmy Award winner Mike McMahan (“Rick and Morty”). The series will focus on the support crew serving on one of Starfleet’s least important ships and will be produced by CBS Eye Animation Productions, CBS Television Studios’ new animation arm; Secret Hideout; and Roddenberry Entertainment. Secret Hideout’s Alex Kurtzman and Heather Kadin and Roddenberry Entertainment’s Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth and Katie Krentz will serve as executive producers alongside McMahan. Aaron Baiers, who brought McMahan to the project, will serve as a co-executive producer. “Mike won our hearts with his first sentence: ‘I want to do a show about the people who put the yellow cartridge in the food replicator so a banana can come out the other end.’ His cat’s name is Riker. His son’s name is Sagan. The man is committed,” said executive producer Alex Kurtzman. “He’s brilliantly funny and knows every inch of every ‘Trek’ episode, and that’s his secret sauce: he writes with the pure, joyful heart of a true fan. As we broaden the world of ‘Trek’ to fans of all ages, we’re so excited to include Mike’s extraordinary voice.” “As a life-long Trekkie, it’s a surreal and wonderful dream come true to be a part of this new era of ‘Star Trek,’” said executive producer Mike McMahan. “While STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS is a half-hour, animated show at its core, it’s undeniably ‘Trek’ – and I promise not to add an episode at the very end that reveals the whole thing took place in a training program.” STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS is not McMahan’s first “Star Trek” project. As a long-time fan of the series, in 2011 McMahan started a Twitter account where he posted episode plots to a fake season of “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” They were such a hit that Simon & Schuster hired him to write a readers’ guide to a fictitious eighth season of “TNG” titled “Star Trek: The Next Generation: Warped: An Engaging Guide to the Never-Aired 8th Season.” For television, McMahan recently served as head writer and executive producer on Adult Swim’s hit animated series “Rick and Morty” and co-created Hulu’s animated alien family show “Solar Opposites.” “We couldn’t have imagined a better creative team to work with on CBS All Access’ first original animated series than Mike McMahan, Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment,” said Julie McNamara, Executive Vice President, Original Content, CBS All Access. “STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS is a fantastic complement to our growing lineup of original series and our ongoing expansion of the ‘Star Trek’ universe on CBS All Access.” In addition to being CBS All Access’ first animated series, STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS is the latest expansion of the “Star Trek” franchise on CBS All Access. CBS All Access is currently home to the hit original series STAR TREK: DISCOVERY in the U.S., returning with season two on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2019, and STAR TREK: SHORT TREKS, a series of four short stories tied to STAR TREK: DISCOVERY and the overall “Star Trek” universe. CBS All Access also announced plans for a new untitled “Star Trek” series featuring Sir Patrick Stewart reprising his iconic role as Jean-Luc Picard. STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS is the first project from CBS Eye Animation Productions and 219 Productions, run by Katie Krentz who signed an overall deal with CBS Television Studios in early 2018 following five years at Cartoon Network. This is CBS Television Studios’ second animated series, following OUR CARTOON PRESIDENT for SHOWTIME.
  8. Today at New York Comic-Con, STAR TREK: DISCOVERY executive producer Alex Kurtzman revealed that the highly anticipated second season of the series will launch Thursday, Jan. 17, 2019, exclusively on CBS All Access in the United States. During the panel with cast and executive producers at Madison Square Garden, the official season two New York Comic-Con trailer debuted, and fans were given a first look at STAR TREK: DISCOVERY's Spock, played by Ethan Peck; Number One, played by Rebecca Romijn; and Section 31's newest recruit, Philippa Georgiou, played by Michelle Yeoh. Following premiere night, all new episodes of STAR TREK: DISCOVERY's 13-episode long second season will be available on-demand weekly on Thursdays, exclusively for CBS All Access subscribers in the U.S. The STAR TREK: DISCOVERY panel, moderated by season two guest star Rebecca Romijn (Number One), featured a conversation with cast members including Sonequa Martin-Green (Commander Michael Burnham), Doug Jones (Commander Saru), Shazad Latif (Ash Tyler), Mary Wiseman (Ensign Sylvia Tilly), Anthony Rapp (Lt. Commander Paul Stamets), Michelle Yeoh (Philippa Georgiou), Wilson Cruz (Dr. Hugh Culber), Mary Chieffo (L'Rell), Anson Mount (Captain Christopher Pike) and Ethan Peck (Spock). They were joined by executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Heather Kadin. STAR TREK: DISCOVERY follows the voyages of Starfleet on their missions to discover new worlds and new life forms, and one Starfleet officer who must learn that to truly understand all things alien, you must first understand yourself. The series features a new ship and new characters while embracing the same ideology and hope for the future that inspired a generation of dreamers and doers. Star Trek: Discovery stars Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones, Anson Mount, Michelle Yeoh, Ethan Peck, James Frain, Anthony Rapp, Mary Wiseman, Shazad Latif, Emily Coutts, Oyin Oladejo, Tig Notaro, Rebecca Romijn
  9. STAR TREK: DISCOVERY announces Ethan Peck as the newest addition to the series. Peck will star as "Spock," the half human, half Vulcan Science Officer of the U.S.S. Enterprise, and foster brother of "Michael Burnham." "Through 52 years of television and film, a parallel universe and a mirror universe, Mr. Spock remains the only member of the original bridge crew to span every era of Star Trek," added Executive Producer Alex Kurtzman. "The great Leonard Nimoy, then the brilliant Zachary Quinto, brought incomparable humanity to a character forever torn between logic and emotion. We searched for months for an actor who would, like them, bring his own interpretation to the role. An actor who would, like them, effortlessly embody Spock's greatest qualities, beyond obvious logic: empathy, intuition, compassion, confusion, and yearning. Ethan Peck walked into the room inhabiting all of these qualities, aware of his daunting responsibility to Leonard, Zack, and the fans, and ready to confront the challenge in the service of protecting and expanding on Spock's legacy. In that spirit, we're thrilled to welcome him to the family." As previously announced, season 2 of STAR TREK: DISCOVERY will premiere in early 2019 on CBS All Access.
  10. Today at Comic-Con International, "Star Trek" fans were provided a sneak peek at the highly anticipated season two premiere episode of STAR TREK: DISCOVERY during the series' Hall H panel with cast and executive producers. The second season is slated to return to CBS All Access in early 2019. STAR TREK: DISCOVERY co-creator and executive producer Alex Kurtzman, who directed the season two premiere, also announced at today's panel the plan for STAR TREK: SHORT TREKS. The four SHORT TREKS episodes will roll out monthly beginning this fall, and will be stand-alone stories, each running approximately 10-15 minutes. Each short will be an opportunity for deeper storytelling and exploration of key characters and themes which fit into STAR TREK: DISCOVERY and the expanding "Star Trek" universe. Rainn Wilson will return to play Harry Mudd in a short he will also direct, and Aldis Hodge will star in another as Craft, a man who finds himself the only human on board a deserted ship. Additional episodes include a deep dive into Saru's (Doug Jones) backstory as the first Kelpien to join Starfleet, and Tilly's (Mary Wiseman) journey aboard the U.S.S. Discovery and her friendship with an unlikely partner. "There is no shortage of compelling stories to tell in the 'Star Trek' universe that inspire, entertain, and either challenge our preconceived ideas or affirm long held beliefs, and we are excited to broaden the universe already with SHORT TREKS," said Kurtzman. "Each episode will deliver closed-ended stories while revealing clues about what's to come on in future STAR TREK: DISCOVERY episodes. They'll also introduce audiences to new characters who may inhabit the larger world of 'Star Trek.'" The STAR TREK: DISCOVERY panel, moderated by season two guest star Tig Notaro (Chief Engineer Reno), featured a conversation with cast members, including Sonequa Martin-Green (Commander Michael Burnham), Doug Jones (Commander Saru), Shazad Latif (Lt. Ash Tyler), Mary Wiseman (Ensign Sylvia Tilly), Anthony Rapp (Lt. Commander Paul Stamets), Wilson Cruz (Dr. Hugh Culber), Mary Chieffo (L'Rell) and Anson Mount (Captain Christopher Pike). They were joined by executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Heather Kadin.

  12. Will still check out the first episode of Star Trek Discovery that is set to air on regular TV, but after hearing more about the show, I have pretty much lost all interest in it. Seems like they are taking the characteristics of the two most poorly received Star Trek series with Enterprise and Voyager and throwing them in this one. My biggest complaint is the fact they've chosen to go back in the past again setting the show 10 yrs before TOS. This is such a bad move because it limits what writers can do since they will be constrained with all the establish Trek lore. You think they would have learned their lesson with Enterprise. Already this ship looks way more futuristic than anything that should have been used by the Federation in that time period and it looks nothing like the ship designs of the time that were previously established. The Captain will be female again which I don't have a problem with, just hope it turns out better than Voyager. Had they set it in the TNG time period or a little ahead, the writers would have had a lot more freedom to establish new things, they could have created more futuristic technologies using today's special effects, gotten people who were interested in seeing what's happened in the Prime Universe since DS9/Nemesis quickly invested in the show and could have brought in guest-stars from the older shows if they choose more easily. Oh well, I give this thing a season at best.
