For those wondering just how Palpatine returned to the land of the living in Rise of Skywalker, it looks like the answer may be revealed in the novelization of the latest film slated for wide release on March 19. In the book, this passage was revealed suggesting the Palpatine we saw in Rise of Skywalker was in fact a clone housing the conscious of Darth Sidious. The essence of Palptaine was likely transferred using forbidden Sith science shortly after Vader tossed him down a shaft at the end of Return of the Jedi. The book which was written by Rae Carson saw an early release at this past weekend's c2e2 convention in Chicago. The idea of Palpatine being able to live-on in the body of a clone is not a new one. We first saw this concept play out in the classic Dark Empire comic book series back in the 90s. Of course that begs the question. If Palpatine could have his consciousness transferred to a new body before death once, why not a second time?
