  1. Sony and Nintendo have joined forces to co-finance a highly anticipated live-action adaptation of the video game, The Legend of Zelda. Filmmaker Wes Ball, known for his work on the Maze Runner franchise, has been tapped to direct this project. The screenplay for the adaptation is being penned by Derek Connolly, a writer represented by Verve. Ball, along with his producing partner Joe Hartwick Jr., will produce the film under their production banner, Oddball Entertainment. The Legend of Zelda video game, created by Japanese game designers Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka and launched in 1986, takes players on a thrilling journey through the enchanting land of Hyrule. The story revolves around the courageous warrior Link and the magical Princess Zelda as they unite to protect Hyrule from the clutches of Ganon, a once-noble warlord who has transformed into an evil demon king. The production of Legend of Zelda will be overseen by Shigeru Miyamoto, the esteemed Representative Director and Fellow of Nintendo, and Avi Arad, the Chairman of Arad Productions Inc. While an official release date has yet to be announced, fans of the iconic video game can eagerly anticipate the arrival of this highly anticipated film adaptation. Source: Deadline
  2. Sony has released a new teaser poster for Expend4bles, the fourth movie in the franchise installment of The Expendables. Among the poster came the announcement of the teaser trailer for June 7th. The fourth movie brings back Jason Statham, Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, and Randy Couture. Newcomers include Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, Megan Fox, Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, and Andy Garcia. Expend4bles is scheduled to premiere on September 22nd, 2023 in theaters.
  3. It's only April and studios are already making changes to when their movies will be released... James Wan’s Aquaman & The Lost Kingdom from Warner Bros. will now be released on Wednesday, December 20th, instead of December 25th. Warner Bros. also has a movie booked for December 19th, 2025 which has yet to be named. The studio has also canceled the September 22nd date for an untitled DC movie. Sony’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife will go up against Aquaman & The Lost Kingdom as it will also be released on Wednesday, December 20th. The Minecraft movie, with Jason Momoa, is getting an April 4th, 2025 release.
  4. Sony made the announcement during CinemaCon that the fifth Ghostbusters movie is in the work. No talent attachments were revealed. The last Ghostbusters movie, Ghostbusters: Afterlife was directed by Jason Reitman and centered around the grandkids of Dr. Egon Spengler. The movie pulled in a total of $326.6M bringing the franchise’s global worth to $938.2M. Source: Deadline
  5. Disney’s Marvel Studios films and MCU Series won't be making an appearance at this year's San Diego Comic-Con, according to the latest report by Deadline. No information has been released if Sony's Marvel titles will be attending the event as well. This will be the third year that Warner Bros. will skip Comic-Con but Warner Bros. Television will have DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and the DC Publishing division will be participating at this year's San Diego Comic-Con@Home. Warner Bros. will have their DC Fandome again this September for the second year in a row. The live edition of San Diego Comic-Con will be November 26th-28th and the San Diego Comic-Con@Home runs July 23rd-25th.
  6. According to Variety, Sony is planning on developing a One Punch Man live-action movie and they are looking to Venom scribes Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner to write it. The movie is being produced by Avi Arad and Ari Arad and their production company. One-Punch Man was created back in 2009 as a Japanese superhero webcomic created by the artist One.
  7. Sony has announced it is moving the Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel from July 10, 2020, to March 5, 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
  8. According to Empire Magazine, Sony plans on releasing the new Vin Diesel Bloodshot movie on digital download next week here in the United States even though it just opened in theaters. This of course is being done due to the major movie theaters being closed here in the US over the Corona crisis.
  9. According to Discussing Film, The 'Masters of the Universe' film that Sony was developing is now being developed and distributed by Netflix with a late 2021/early 2022 release. Last October, The Hollywood Reporter stated that Sony was looking to release the film on Netflix due to the risk of the high-budget film being far too costly for the studio to release theatrically. Sources say that the production budget for ‘Masters of the Universe’ is currently aimed to be around $130M, It's currently unknown what involvement Sony has with this project but we should know in the coming months whether Sony has officially backed out of the project or still involved. Mattel Films will be working alongside David Goyer’s Phantom Four Films as two of the production companies behind the film. Goyer wrote the first draft of the screenplay for Sony and was in talks to direct the film, but dropped out and became an executive producer on the project. Goyer will produce the film alongside Jason Blumenthal, Todd Black, Julie Pistor, DeVon Franklin and Kevin Turen. The Nee Brothers are still attached to write and direct the film with Noah Centineo in the lead role for the film.
  10. Sony Pictures has March 2021 marked on the calendar for their 'Masters of the Universe' film release and the studio might just have the release set for Netflix instead of theaters. Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman is looking at the option of getting risk-free cash for the pricey project by making it for Netflix instead. The studio is just in talks as of now, but such a deal would make Sony the next studio after Paramount to start making movies belonging exclusively or almost exclusively to the streamer. Since Sony has been developing 'Masters of the Universe' since 2007, perhaps making it that much less appealing to sell given that the studio finally has a version that it wants to make. Sony would base the sale on Netflix having the She-Ra and The Princesses of Power series and the upcoming Kevin Smith He-Man anime series. Source: The Hollywood Reporter
  11. Are movie studios starting to shy away from the San Diego Comic-Con? The question comes to mind as Deadline is reporting that movie studios such as Sony, Universal, Warner Bros. DC film studio and Lionsgate will not be attending the convention. Studios currently set to be attending are Disney/Marvel, Paramount and New Line. No reason for Universal, Warner Bros DC film studio or Lionsgate to not be attending but Sony does have their hands full with Spider-Man: Far From Opening opening next week and Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood upcoming on July 26th. Their promo teams have events set up for the whole year with Zombieland 2: Double Tap (October 18th), Charlie’s Angels (November 15th), The Grudge (Janaury 3rd), the comic-book feature adaptation Bloodshot starring Vin Diesel (February 21st), Blumhouse’s Fantasy Island (February 28th) and, farther out, Marvel’s Morbius (July 31st, 2020).
  12. Sony Pictures Television and Hivemind, the production company behind Amazon's THE EXPANSE and Netflix's upcoming adaptation of THE WITCHER, announced today a new partnership with global video game powerhouse SQUARE ENIX to develop a first-of-its-kind, live-action adaptation of a beloved chapter from the blockbuster FINAL FANTASY(R) series, which has sold more than 144 million units worldwide across three decades. The live-action television series will tell an original story set in the fantastic world of Eorzea, based on FINAL FANTASY XIV, the franchise's blockbuster online role-playing game. Since it first debuted in 2013, the online title has continued to delight and amass millions of players around the world year over year and only further cemented FINAL FANTASY as one of the most storied and influential franchises in gaming history. Inspired directly by the world and characters of the title's fourteenth installment, the project will embrace the bold and genre-bending sensibilities of the revered and long-running FINAL FANTASY series as it explores the struggle between magic and technology in a quest to bring peace to a land in conflict. Filled with iconic hallmarks of the title's revered mythology - magitek and beastmen, airships and chocobos - the forthcoming series will feature a mixture of new and familiar faces. Those will, notably, include the live-action debut of Cid - one of the games' central and most beloved characters who has appeared in almost every installment of the franchise to date. "FINAL FANTASY XIV and Eorzea are the perfect gateway into FINAL FANTASY for longtime fans and newcomers alike," said Sony Pictures Television Co-President Chris Parnell. "This show is about embracing and embodying all of the elements that have made the mythos such an endlessly captivating phenomenon, and it's an immense honor to be bringing all of Eorzea's iconic characters, settings, and concepts - including fan-favorites like Cid and, of course, the chocobos - to life for a television audience." "Television is the ideal medium to capture the extraordinary depth, sophisticated themes, and unparalleled imagination of FINAL FANTASY and its multitude of unique and fully realized characters," said Jason Brown, Hivemind Co-Founder and Co-President. "We are working tirelessly to bring together artists from around the world who are united in honoring the extraordinary legacy of this franchise and its millions of fans around the world." FINAL FANTASY's multibillion-dollar legacy is one of the most influential pieces of global pop culture of the past 30 years with a footprint that now encompasses all major home and handheld consoles, as well as toys, card games, manga, soundtracks, concerts and live events on three continents. The upcoming television adaptation represents a momentous new milestone for the franchise and will mark the first time a FINAL FANTASY world - and its many beloved inhabitants - will be realized in live action. Jason F. Brown, Sean Daniel, and Dinesh Shamdasani of Hivemind will serve as Executive Producers on the series. Ben Lustig and Jake Thornton (WINTER'S KNIGHT, THE WELLS INITIATIVE) have been commissioned to write for the series and will also serve as Executive Producers.
  13. According to Variety, Sony is in final negotiations with Paul Rudd to play a teacher in the new "Ghostbusters 2020," by Jason Reitman, son to Ivan Reitman who directed the original "Ghostbusters." Additional cast in talks include Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard and Mckenna Grace. The screenplay for Ghostbusters 2020 was co-written by Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan and plans to shoot the film are expected later this summer. Ivan Reitman would produce the new installment. “I’ve been wanting to work with Paul Rudd since my short film opened for ‘Wet Hot American Summer’ at Sundance. I’m thrilled he’ll be joining this new chapter in the original Ghostbusters universe,” said Jason Reitman. The studio isn't talking about plot details but sources within Variety explain the story will be an extension of the original “Ghostbusters” and focus on a single mom and her family, with Coon playing the mom and Wolfhard playing her son. It’s unknown how exactly it connects to the original Ghostbusters series. Sigourney Weaver is also rumored to return as Dana Barrett.
  14. A theater fight in the making as Warner Bros. new Mortal Kombat movie will be going head-to-head against Sony and Mattel Films’ Masters of the Universe with both being released on March 5th, 2021. The new fantasy-action Mortal Kombat is the third film inspired by the video games and is being directed by first-time filmmaker Simon McQuoid and produced by Aquaman’s James Wan. Two previous films, 1995's Mortal Kombat and 1997’s Mortal Kombat Annihilation, both based on the video games were released. The film just started production in South Australia, with no details on cast or storyline revealed. Source: Deadline
