  1. Sony Pictures is taking on the challenge of remaking a remake of an original movie. They've chosen Ben Wang to take the lead in the next installment of the franchise, according to Deadline. Joining Wang in the new film are Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio, reprising their roles from previous movies. While specific plot details remain vague, we do know that the story is set on the East Coast and revolves around a Chinese teenager who discovers strength and purpose through martial arts, thanks to a mentor. Jonathan Entwistle is directing the movie, with the script penned by Rob Lieber. Karen Rosenfelt is producing, and the film is scheduled to hit theaters on December 13, 2024. Wang gained recognition for his breakout role in the Disney+ series American Born Chinese, which also features Michelle Yeoh.
  2. Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions are developing Twisted Metal into a TV Adaptation. The original tale comes from Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick with Cobra Kai’s Michael Jonathan Smith writing the adaptation. The first Twisted Metal video game was launched in 1995 and has spawned five more sequels for the PS One, PS2 and PS3. The action comedy follows a motor-mouthed outsider offered a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland. With the help of a trigger-happy car thief, he’ll face savage marauders driving vehicles of destruction and other dangers of the open road, including a deranged clown who drives an all too familiar ice cream truck. Will Arnett will executive produce via his production company Electric Avenue, along with Marc Forman and Peter Principato/Artists First, Smith, Reese, Wernick, Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan. 3. Maybe it's something in the water but according to Deadline, Universal Pictures, Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm, Sony Pictures, HBO and Netflix will not be attending the San Diego Comic-Con beginning on July 19th. The no-shows are due to the uncertainty of the WGA strike that has failed to reach a deal with the AMPTP, and SAG-AFTRA and are still negotiating with the studios. The studios decided against planning a major presence in case the actors, as well as the writers, are unwilling to attend.
  4. Deadline has confirmed that Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, James Acaster, and Emily Alyn Lind have joined the cast of the live-action sequel to Sony Pictures’ hit film, Ghostbusters: Afterlife. The sequel will be directed by Gil Kenan with Jason Reitman, who directed the 2021 film, moving into the writer-producer role alongside co-scribe Kenan and Jason Blumenfeld. Paul Rudd and Carrie Coon will be returning with the location now returning to New York City and the iconic firehouse made famous in the original Ghostbusters films. The movie is scheduled for a December 2023 release.
  5. Sony Pictures is looking to bank on the success of the 2021's Ghostbusters: Afterlife by wrapping up pre-production and giving the directing reins to the film's writer and executive producer Gil Kenan. 6. Deadline is reporting that Sony Pictures has hired Takashi Doscher to write the screenplay for the PlayStation Productions’ film adaptation of the latter’s hugely successful action-adventure game Ghost of Tsushima. The game from Sucker Punch Productions follows samurai warrior Jin Sakai, the last surviving member of his clan, who must set aside the traditions that have shaped him as a warrior to wage an unconventional war for the freedom of Tsushima. Director Chad Stahelski is attached to helm the project with Peter Kang overseeing the project on behalf of the studio. Stahelski, Alex Young, and Jason Spitz are producing via 87Eleven Entertainment. Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan will produce on behalf of PlayStation Productions. 8. Variety is reporting that Netflix has emerged the winner of a two-year auction to have the exclusive U.S. rights to stream Sony Pictures’ theatrical releases in the first pay TV window starting with the studio’s 2022 slate. Included in the first-look agreement with Sony for all of the studio’s original movies produced for the direct-to-streaming market. This agreement has Sony committed to a certain numbers of titles for Netflix but the studio can sell to other streaming services if Netflix passes on the project. Older titles from Sony's movie vault is included with a license for an unspecified number of titles. Starz is the Sony Pictures’ primary pay TV partner and the new theatrical output deal with Netflix, which only covers the U.S., is believed to run about five years and is undoubtedly worth hundreds of millions of dollars to the studio over the term. Industry sources said Sony executives are working on another significant theatrical movie licensing pact outside the Netflix agreement. Netflix already has a deal with Sony for all of its animated releases and next year this will include all movies from the various film banners on the Culver City lot — including Columbia Pictures, Sony Pictures Classics, Screen Gems and TriStar Pictures — will stream exclusively on Netflix after their theatrical and home entertainment releases. That promises to bring to Netflix future installments of the “Spiderman,” “Venom” and “Jumanji” franchises, among others. The windows for Netflix usually begins about nine months after a film’s theatrical release, although this timetable may become sooner. Sources did not confirm if the viewing of new Sony movies will be included in the traditional monthly cost for Netflix or if Netflix will be adding on an additional pay service for viewing.
  9. Sources within Sony Pictures have informed Deadline that Oscar Isaac is attached to play Solid Snake in the Jordan Vogt-Roberts long awaited Metal Gear Solid adaptation.
