  1. It's Wednesday, and you know what that means: ToyFarce review! This week, we're having a look at the Batman: The Animated Series Condiment King wave from McFarlane Toys/DC Direct, or basically, the Condiment King figure with its 4 'other figures' accessories. Spoiler: this is not going to be a nice review, those figures are not great. Sadly, they look and feel like bootleg versions of the original ones. The packaging is pretty nice, has a very retro feel, with drawings from the series on the side (which look nothing like the figures in the packaging, but I digress...). The whole point of that wave was the build-a-figure, which is the only new release. As an completist (or in other words, an idiot), I got the wave because I wanted the new figure. They were fairly easy to get, I ordered them on Target's website and they arrived a few weeks later. First, the caped crusader himself, Batman. Honestly, this figure is quite terrible. The shiny plastic and the look of it make it feel like a bootleg version of the original DC Collectibles figures. They used the body of the Batman figure that came with the Batcycle (and sold the figure and the Batcycle separately this time around... Yay!), which has a god awful ab-crunch, and used a different head, I believe (which looks more like the New Adventures of Batman head sculpt). It looks clunky, doesn't articulate well, and the right leg broke as I got it out of the box (it's holding up with blutac on the pictures). It comes with 5 extra hands, his grapnel launcher, a batarang, and the Condiment King's arms. I understand that we need Batman on the shelves for people to get in the line, but we've already had 4 re-issues of that one from DC Collectibles (+ the Batcycle one), so this mash-up of all figures doesn't really make sense. Also, the cel shading looks very bad. Robin, the boy wonder, also feels like an unofficial version of the original DC Collectibles figure. Shiny plastic, the cape is not even painted yellow on the inside... What is going on, McFarlane Toys? Robin comes with 5 extra hands, a rubber bola and the Condiment King's legs. Just like the old figure, he has articulations but doesn't move well. This figure was already released twice (and DC Direct did the cel shading a lot better), so apart from getting the Condiment King parts, there is also no point for it. Mr Freeze is another figure that was released a few times before. It wasn't the best figure in the old Batman: the Animated series line, and it still isn't today. The colors are a bit off, and very shiny. They used the same rubber parts on the joints like the old figure, which disintegrate fast, sadly. Mr Freeze was first released in the GCPD Rogue's Gallery set, and was available later as an individual release, so this one is the third one. He comes with 8 extra hands, his freeze gun and the Condiment's King backpack with ketchup and mustard guns. Finally, the Scarecrow. Well, it's not the worst of the wave, I guess. He does look like a very shiny copy of the original one. He comes with 2 hands, an unmasked head and a scythe, just like the old figure did, as well as the whole bust and head of the Condiment King (who separated the build-a-figure? I feel like it's really uneven. One gets a backpack, the other gets half a body). The Jonathan Crane head has less paint on it than the original release. Alright, so... after going through so much, you'd think the Condiment King figure will be worth it, right? Well... eh. The figure looks cool, despite the bad cel shading, but the legs on mine were really loose (nothing that a drop of super glue before moving the joints in every direction didn't fix, but still...). It's slightly bigger than the other figures in the line too, so it doesn't scale really well. I guess there can't only be great figures. Sometimes, you're gonna pick something and gonna be disappointed. That's the life of a collector! More news at 11:00... "Ah, the big bad Bat-guy. I knew you'd ketchup to me sooner or later! How I've relished this meeting!"
  2. It's Wednesday and you know what that means: ToyFarce review! This week, we're having a look at the Riddler Puzzle Box by Edward Nigma from McFarlane Toys/DC Direct. Something different this week! When this was announced, I thought "Cool, props!", thinking it would look a bit like something out of the Arkham video game series. Unfortunately, it wasn't like that...but it's still a Riddler themed puzzle box! The box arrived a bit smashed, but there was enough protection inside for the box to be fine. The Riddler Puzzle Box by Edward Nigma is a big cube, with puzzles on 4 of its sides (bottom and 'back' of the box don't have much). It's pretty sturdy and looks fun on a shelf, especially open or with a McFarlane Toys DC Multiverse Arkham City The Riddler action figure next to it (available now!). Now, I'm gonna try to solve it, but if you do not want to be spoiled about the content of the box, you'll have to skip the next few parts! First, I turned the dial on the little door and the door opened (it has a flat side, so it opens when you get it on the right position). Inside, there was a piece of batarang (1 out of 3), 2 plastic cards and a note. The 2 cards have parts of a question mark drawn on them, and if you align them in the right position, you can fit them in the card slot next to the little door. I did that, and am not sure if it did anything! Yay! On the side with the 4 buttons, the button that has the highlighted question mark can be pushed, and it pushes out the first button. I have yet to figure out what that button/key that came out can be used for, but at least, I got a button/key! The top part has one of the squares (the middle one) that can be removed, and if you push the remaining squares up, you unveil a button! Push it and the top part opens: 2 notes and another part of the Batarang are inside! For the last part, with the key pad, I first tried to enter the 'year when the bat got his start', as mentioned in the notes found in the top part, and it did nothing. The other card said 'To continue, you'll need to phone some friends. Forget the bats, call the birds and a cat and start with your oldest friend first. Success is just a few clicks away!'... It didn't help much, but that last sentence kinda gave a clue, since I noticed when I pushed 4, there is a click sound. I pushed it a few more times, and a drawer opened at the back of the box, with the third and final part of the Batarang, and a note saying congratulations and to place everything back where you found them for others to try to solve it (I forgot to take a picture of that one. My bad!). You can now assemble your Batarang, which is kinda nice, made of metal, with a bit of weight to it. In the end, I am not entirely sure that I did everything the way it was intended (like the key pad part, where I just pressed the same button until it opened... there might be a more 'clever' way to solve that). It's fun for 5-10 minutes, but once you've solved it once, it kind of loses its novelty. At least, it looks good on a shelf. If you're planning to get it, I would wait to get it on sale, because $99.99 is a bit much for what it is. More news at 11:00... Riddle me this, riddle me that. Who is afraid of the big black bat?
  3. It's Wednesday and you know what that means... ToyFarce review! This week, we're having a look at the resurrected Batman: The Adventures Continue line by DC Direct, under the McFarlane Toys banner. I have been a huge fan of the Batman: The Animated Series and The New Batman Adventures lines from DC Direct since the very first wave, and bought every single one of them as they came out, so I was devastated when they announced DC Direct was gone, and that they wouldn't release the last few figures that were announced. Fast forward to a few years later, when McFarlane Toys announced that he was reviving DC Direct, and i was full of hope again! First, the Batman version 2 (cel shaded). Batman version 2 comes with 3 extra pairs of hands, a batarang, a grapnel launcher and a hand with the grapnel launcher in it. This figure is pretty much a repaint of the very first figure from the DC Direct line from 2014, but with some nicer paint apps, and cel shading (the same cel shading as the Marvel Legends VHS Wolverine, complete with shadows on the inner thigh making it look like he soiled himself). This figure has never been known to have amazing articulations, but man, does it look good on a shelf. I've always liked his presence, the accurate design making it look straight out of the animated series (which they didn't manage to reproduce with the Animated Series one, in my opinion. There's something off about it but I can't place my finger on it). Comparison pics with the original DC Direct one from 2014, and the MAFEX version from last year. Catwoman is another straight repaint from the one from the very first wave from 2014, except the paint apps are a lot better (and she doesn't come with Isis the cat...). Also, we finally get an unmasked Selina Kyle head! The unmasked head had only been available with the Mondo 1:6 version, so it's nice to finally have it in 1:12. She also comes with 2 extra pairs of hands and a whip. As all the female releases from that line, this figure feels very brittle, since it's the same design as in the Animated Series, with really thin legs and arms. Comparison pics with the original DC Direct one from 2014. The Batman Who Laughs is one of those figures from that line of a character that never appeared in the Animated Series, but here is what he would look like if he did, as if Bruce Timm designed it for the show (just like Red Hood, Deathstroke, Azrael and the Armored Batman in the 2 previous waves). The Batman Who Laughs comes with 2 extra hands, a mace and a chain batarang. To me, this is where this line is fun, when they bring characters that weren't in the show with that design. I could do without the repaints, even. Give us more of those! The Batman Who Laughs looks amazing in the Animated Series style. There were also a Vampire Batman, Talon, Flashpoint Batman and Hush, along with cel shaded repaints of Batgirl and Tim Drake Robin that had been shown at various conventions before DC Direct shut down, so here's hoping that these will see the light of day as well! More news at 11:00... The Adventures Continue... now with cel shading!

  5. Earlier this year we were shocked with the sad news that DC Direct/DC Collectibles was being essentially shut down by Warner Bros. in a continued effort to restructure their DC Comics division. In light of that sad news, Asoka the Geek reached out to many folks in the action figure collecting community including myself, and asked if we would help with a video that would pay tribute to the company and all they have done for DC Comics fans. Here is that video Asoka put together:
  6. News broke today that DC Comics was rocketed by major layoffs being made by it's parent company Warner Bros. which includes the likes of editor-in-chief Bob Harris, senior VP of publishing strategy and support services Hank Kanalz, VP of marketing and creative services Jonah Weiland, VP global publishing initiatives and digital strategy Bobbie Chase, senior story editor Brian Cunningham, and executive editor Mark Doyl. Beyond that according to THR, DC Direct/DC Collectibles which has been the in-house merchandise and collectibles manufacturer arm for DC Comics for the past 22 years has been completely shut down. We are very sadden by this news and wish everyone who worked there all the best.

  8. DC Collectibles, known for its iconic lines of collectibles, statues and action figures, directly from the source, is returning to the name on which it was founded, DC Direct. The move to rename reaffirms DC Direct’s commitment to source DC material and validates the authenticity of being truly “from the source”. “Returning to the name DC Direct just makes sense,” said Jim Fletcher, Creative Director, DC Direct. “The name lets our fans know that we have unparalleled and direct access to DC editorial and the industry’s premier talent, which in turn allows us to create an extensive offering of unique and high-end product lines that are truly authentic to DC.” During New York Toy Fair, DC Direct will display its striking new 2020 action figures and statues in its booth. This year’s lineup will feature an all-new statue line based on the The Joker, a revamped Artist Alley line, and additions to expand its best-selling action figure and statue lines including DC Essentials, Batman Black & White, Harley Quinn Red, White & Black, DC Designer Series, DC Bombshells, and more. With the success of the Batman Black & White and Harley Quinn Red, White & Black statue series lines it is only fitting that The Joker get his own statue line to be based on the iconic images of the Super-Villain from the DC Comics pages. The series will appropriately be named The Joker Clown Prince of Crime. Fans and collectors won’t want to miss the inaugural figure in the series based on an iconic comic image of The Joker by Brian Bolland. This piece really emphasizes the drama and the mania that makes The Joker one of the best foes of all time. Following Bolland, will be statues by Jim Lee with a classic comic Joker design that really portrays how creepy the jokester is with oversized features such as hands and feet and Lee Bermejo, perhaps one of the most popular comic illustrators associated with The Joker. Bermejo has designed a statue that will look amazing on any shelf as its displayed in hues of purple and green. The highly collectable DC Artists Alley line will also undergo a revamping, fans will notice more premium format designs and figures. First out of the gate, The Joker by Brandt Peters. Peters uses his design talents to bring The Joker to life by combining his antique, Victorian style for a truly unique take on the villain. Additional artists joining the DC Artists Alley line include, Brittney Lee, a popular artist who used her talent in paper-craft-style art to create a new take on the famous villainess Catwoman, Patrick Ballesteros, who uses childlike nostalgia and imagination, to bring one back to their younger years will provide his take on the Bat Family including Deathstroke and Robin, and Zach Heffelfinger will provide his take on the Dark Knight. As a character designer for Nickelodeon on SpongeBob SquarePants, Heffelfinger brings about a sense of nostalgia with his stylistic art.
