  1. None confirmed. Gung-Ho, Spirit, and Wild Bill were left in a compromising position (3 of them vs 13 Plague Members), but the story ended with them *willingly* getting backed into a building that the Plague then blew up around them. It was enough to convince the Plague they were dead, and they left to do other things. But we never saw bodies, and (again) the Joes did it willingly, even saying to one another "Isn't it obvious... we're gonna die!" So, it's kinda obvious that they *didnt* die, and pulled the Custer's Last Stand con to get the Plague off their backs. There's also an aerial battle in the most recent issue, which pretty much every Joe pilot is involved in. It's likely there will be some casualties there. But again, Hasbro's enforcing a no-deaths-onscreen rule which means we may not get confirmation on the kills. This might be DDP's way of allowing a new company to continue the continuity without losing potential characters, and at the same time providing a sufficient body count (even if through illusion and vagueness).
  2. They werent killed for what they knew. They were killed because Cobra Commander wanted them dead. Again, aside from Monkeywrench, none of these guys were Cobra big-wigs. Cesspool was in a coma before AE#1, and Sei-Tin (if he was in the Coffin, Storm Shadow probably found a way to switch his and Tj'bang's minds back) was paralyzed and dying already. Biggles-Jones and the Paine Brothers were all found by the Joes in a Cobra hospital... meaning they were all sick/dying/wounded... lame ducks as it were. Overkill had a nervous breakdown in Bhadikstan during Volume 2 #35-ish, and begged the Joes to kill him. According to Zartan's concerns, once Cobra Commander secured his new power, he'd likely come after the Dreadnoks. The Commander wants order and total control... Zartan's boys represent anarchy. The news of Monkeywrench's death seems to confirm this line of thinking: IE Cobra killed him as a message to Zartan that his forces are on the firing-line, equal in status to enemy forces (Artur Kulik of the Red Shadows), the sick, (pretty much everyone else), and the worthless (Headman, Overkill).
  3. Not exactly the way it went, but I can understand your confusion. Everything is so muddled about the Coffin jail-break because there was supposed to be a one-shot comic dealing solely with that storyline, but Hasbro nixed it as part of the paring down of DDp's license as it nears the end. There's also a (seemingly) strict policy that they cannot show people being killed (the actual showing of it), so everything is left ambiguous or mentioned after the fact. So the few scenes we got just don't convey the story properly. The intention was for Tomax to assault the prison, release those Cobra Commander ordered, and purge the rest. The other characters Tomax killed in the prison were pure nobodies. Headman and Cesspool are reviled for their connection to the DEF and Eco-Warriors sub-lines. Artur Kulik and Sei-Tin are both DDP-created characters that readers don't seem to like much (Sei-Tin was also part of a *very* unresolved plot involving Storm Shadow and Tj'bang). And Overkill (formerly the SAW-Viper who killed 4 Joes in the Marvel run) shares infamy with Vance Wingfield, Dr Biggles-Jones and the Paine Brothers as being characters who flat-out died/disappeared in the Marvel run, and were inexplicably alive again in the DDp run. So really, only Monkeywrench's death carries any weight. To have it be a random act of violence as the Cobras retreat doesn't accomplish what that single death needs to accomplish (incensing Zartan and motivating him to act against Cobra). Storm Shadow's dialogue seems to confirm what DDp wanted us to know: "Though Tomax did fail to free a vast majority of the prisoners, he was able to eliminate those Cobra considered to be loose ends." So that proves that the murdered few were pre-meditated, and not targets of opportunity after initial plan failed. Also, there were *many* prisoners that Cobra left behind.
  4. When the Joes arrived at his "offices", they found his face mutilated, and they said he was near-death. But the *Joes were there*, and they wouldnt just let him die. They obviously got him medical attention, and we know there's a medical ward in the Coffin because Xamot was there as well. When Cobra raided the Coffin and freed Xamot, it's likely Scalpel was nearby and that's why Cobra was able to free him before they were turned away by Storm Shadow.
  5. Where's the head from? I'm thinking about an *actual* Bombstrike custom for it.
  6. The reason you initially got no response is because there's been a massive shift in the comic since the issue you left off on. I don't think anyone's really gotten a chance to digest everything that's happened so far as Issue #21 was the beginning of a storyline that has not resolved itself yet, and won't until the Devil' Due comic run ends in May, with AE #36. Issue #21 began a 4-part story called "Sins of the Mother" which focuses on the Baroness' bloody trail of revenge against the various agents of Cobra in an attempt to retrieve her baby. The result of that storyline leads directly into the 12-issue Conclusion of the series, World War III. And it'd be easier for you to read those issues, and see what happens than it would *ever* be fore someone to type out all the events that have occured in those two stories!
  7. Like dPrime said, The GIJoe Movie Entertainment Pack was cancelled, and Hasbro is backing off from the cult-favorites in favor of the widely popular characters that better represent the GIJoe brand. That seems to be Corporate Spin for "What were we thinking? Cobra La? Oh My God did that suck! And we were gonna make figures of that? No F***ink way, man. No f***ink way!" And as much as I'm pulling for them, Firewall and Zanya probably won't get a fair shake, especially with Devil's Due falling by the wayside. I'd say Zarana and Jinx are the only ones on this list we have even a remote chance of getting. Cover Girl's been confirmed as a NO GO by Hasbro back at Joe Con. Unless the GIJoe vs Cobra concept that replaces the 25th Anniversary this summer lifts the tight restriction on years, we're not going to see many more females. Jinx is not confirmed. But she is the most likely candidate.
  8. Hasbro has been really good about showing us official pics of the upcoming single figure waves for the past month or two. So there isn't much else they could've shown. Innit wonderful when a toy company treats its fans well, and still gets called out for it. And for the record, the 2 Entertainment packs shown included a total of 7 figures, and a new Build-A-Prop concept. We also saw 6 new vehicles, and 4 Driver figures, plus they unveiled the new BAT. That's still a damn sight more than almost any other company showed for their hottest lines. We got spoiled, and some people can't be happy with it. When the BATs were introduced in the comic, they served as a mobile delivery system for Mindbender's Mutant Creeper Vines. They captured a group of Joes and stuck them in a junkyard maze, and sent the BATs in to test the system. The canister on the BAT shown at Toy Fair is the Creeper Pod canister seen in that issue, and the pods are the spikey ball things by its feet. Well, everyone's entitled to an opinion, no matter how wrong. I happen to believe that the small niche group who honestly like Cobra La are far outweighed by those that consider it an embarrassment, and would rather see the new molds required to produce them spent on more iconic, less cult-favorite characters, like Mutt & Junkyard, Alpine, Bazooka, and Major Bludd (who's already getting shafted bad enough).
  9. According to some reports from Toy Fair, Hasbro realized Cobra La may not have the mass appeal they are looking for. I'd bet good money we never see that Nemesis Enforcer vs Falcon Comic Pack either.
  10. Counting what I have: 10 Box Set Troopers (Call Sign: Snakeoil) 1 Wave 1 Officers 12 Legion Troopers (Call Sign: Snakeskin) 2 Legion officers 6 Wave 2 Troopers (Viper Pilots w/ Legion Jetpacks) 2 Crimson Guards What I want: 2 more Box Set Troopers 1 more Wave 1 Officer 2 more Crimson Guardsmen 2 Fred Series Guardsmen (Comic Pack) 6 more Wave 2 Troopers (to man 6 Trubble Bubbles; 12 if the Cobra CLAWS rumor pans out) 12 3-Pack Troopers (Call Sign: Snakebite) 2 3-Pack Officers 12 Vipers 24 BATs 6 Tele-Vipers 12 HISS Drivers (for my 12 DTC HISSes) 1 Rip-It (as HISS Commander with 25th HISS V)
  11. There *are* people that want them. There's no denying that. But Hasbro may just have realized how marginal and niche those numbers are. An overwhelming number of collectors, and most casual fans look at the movie as a low point (most that don't know better blame it for Sunbow ceasing production of the Joe cartoon). Hasbro might also be realizing it's not a great idea, marketing-wise, to parade the odder elements of GIJoe's history to the public right before a multi-million dollar movie hits. It'd be like doing a line of Beast Pretender Action Masters right before releasing the second Transformers Movie. You're going to give people the impression that Transformers are represented by the worst/most hated aspects as much as they are by the best. The Classics line was a perfect "mint leaf" or palette cleanser before the Blockbuster.
  12. In the Toy Fair Press Release they posted on Friday called one of the vehicles a Cobra VAMP, and speculation was immediate that it would be the Stinger, and Hasbro either got the name wrong, or can't get the copyright for the name anymore. But that obviously isn't the case. Hasbro just mislabeled the VAMP as a Cobra vehicle, or else it was just a typo.
  13. I have my doubts at the moment, unless Hasbro finds another 5 multi-packs to pack the pieces in with. Especially with news from Toy Fair that Hasbro is rethinking the logic behind Cobra La figures, the Movie may become a *very* streamlined set, with Falcon, Tunnel Rat, and other mainstays rather than the fantastic elements that make it infamous. It also works out this time, as "The MASS Device" is one of the sets included in the 5 BAM (Build-A-Machine) sets. To do another 5 sets based on other things, then offer a BAM BET (hehehe) with them... seems like it's a little off. Unless Hasbro actually holds back The Movie, and replaces it with another Boxed Set, I don't see the BET happening.
  14. Re-read the thread, there *is* a Serpentor included in the Vehicle 2-pack, but the had to use a production figure from Wave 2 as a placeholder. We've been going thru this for years, it still boggles my mind how the older fans still ask these questions. There is a high volume of very sensitive pre-production stuff being shipped to and assembled at Toy Fair. Lots of times little things get forgotten, prototypes suffer damage in transit, and the people assembling the display have a limited knowledge of what they're doing. Sometimes, *many times* really, what's on display is only indicative of the things we're getting, not *exactly* what we're getting. I have no idea what that means, but TF Flint is there because he's part of Wave 4 '08. Roadblock is a straight repaint of the first version, with a new vest. We covered that when the original photos were released. The BAT comes with more accessories than the original, 2 backpacks (the second one is for the mutated creeper vines from Marvel #44, the spiked balls on the bottom are the creeper vine pods), 3 different hands, a second head, and a removable "battle damaged" chest-plate! What more do you honestly need here??? Prototypes at Toy Fair are typically incomplete. Someone probably thought they sent a redundant knife as a back-up,and left it off the display. Does it matter? The figure is already in stores, and there's nothing wrong with the production-level toys, so the prototype is worthless at this point. Hence they come in boxed sets with DVDs of the 5-part miniseries from the Sunbow era. Yes.
  15. Ok, I'm saying this as a nicely as possible. You do realize you're starting to sound a little nuts, don't you? You're posting the same things, again and again, on just about every Joe Board out there. It can't be healthy for you to be this obssessed, and it certainly isn't going to change anyone else's opinions. You have your preference. I think everyone who cares knows that by now. Don't you think, maybe, you could curb this semi-spam posting, at least until IDW announces that they *have* the license, and we know whether or not they're considering a reboot. Please, I'm asking, not chastising. Could you give this topic a rest until we know more about it?
  16. It looks like a continuity error. For all we knew, Scarface was never mentioned again after the destruction of PIT I, and died handcuffed to the prison bars when the base exploded. The issue itself was supposed to advertise both Scarface and Siegies, which put it in a nebulous timeframe, as Scarface died in #19, ad the Siegies weren't introduced until #29. Other than the mention of Dr. Venom being dead (which I've seen on the boards, I haven't read the book yet) the book could easily be set earlier in the timeline. Personally, I'm going to say the mention of Dr. Venom being dead is assumption of the narrator (or whoever said it), based on the events of Issue #12, where Venom, Kwinn, and Snake-Eyes were in a bunker that was bombed by Baroness and Scarface. Venom was thought dead for 3 issues. Since we're not likely to get much continuity between these issues, I really dont want to deal with a Scarface Reborn, or a copycat... so I'll just stick it in earlier. 13.5 seems a nice fit.
  17. Actually, the new Classics Prowl seems to have a very close resemblence to the IDW revamp. So there's always going to be cross-breeding. Remember, the Baroness started as a plot-necessitated comic character, then transferred over to the cartoon mini-series... all before getting her own figure in a Hasbro-designed uniform in 1984. Same thing happened with Kamakura, who appeared in the comics, then got two figures, an appeared in the accompanying Valor vs Venom cartoon, and was further adapted/transferred into the Sigma 6 universe. So yeah, no one should be expecting the comic to radically change the way the toyline's going, but expect that a successful character or popular idea will filter back into the toyline every once in a while.
  18. Actually, while Storm Shadow wasn't the widest selling book ever, it was not cancelled due to lack of sales. Hasbro killed the book with a mandate, probably because the license was at an end. There was also supposed to be a Special Missions book that told the events of Cobra's invasion of the Coffin Prison (where the deaths of a lot of Cobra personel were meant to take place), but the mandate seems to be that Devil's Due can only publish America's Elite until their license runs out. But it's one thing to say Larry doesnt have a following among Joe fans. That's obviously not true. It's also not fair to say the book failed based on his writing. It was a secondary title based on/spun off the flagging and unpopular America's Elite. Any clout it had was negated by the roughly 65,000 readers who were with DDP at first, but who dropped the title over the years... Devil's Due alienated a lot of fans. Nothing they do now would bring readers to GIJoe. That's got to have a lot to do with Hasbro moving the license elsewhere. If there's even a chance that distancing the brand from this publisher could produce higher revenues, that's a chance worth taking.
  19. Funny, because for the past few months, DDP reps have been saying the exact opposite on other Joe boards (cuz they closed down their own, which were mostly populated by Joe fans). They have in-house properties now, some of which have been optioned as movies, and that's become their #1 priority. GIJoe took a backseat a long time ago. If they'd gotten the license renewed (which it's pretty obvious they didnt) there's nothing saying GIJoe woud've bounced back to the top. With only 15k an issue sales, DDP has disenfrachised far too many fans who won't give any kind of reboot a chance under this publisher. That really is the signal to move on.
  20. I find that to be a funny qualifier. What if Larry Hama is in a place where he has no interest in doing a monthly comic with such strict editorial restraints (coming from both Marvel's people, and Hasbro). What if you took Larry out of the equation? What exactly has Marvel done for GIJoe that wasn't a direct result of Larry Hama's control over the book. Two transformers crossovers? Marvel mandates. Issues 8, 9, 119, 153, and 154... also "Ladies Day" from the Special Missions run. Every non-Hama issue of Marvel's run seemed to stink on dry ice. So exactly what is Marvel bringing to the table if they don't serve up Hama-chops? I'm not saying Marvel's evil, or a bad choice if Hasbro goes that way. But to say "Make Mine Marvel... if Hama's writing it!" seems a little misguided. Sounds more like you want Larry Hama back, moreso than caring which company gets the book. What if Marvel got the license, then said "We're gonna let Jeph Loeb write it. He's been wanting to do a book about a mute ninja." What if IDW gets the license, and says Larry turned down the offer? At some point, we're gonna have to learn to like GIJoe for GIJoe's sake, and not because one guy is writing it. Granted, I'll always love the Marvel run (save the issues above), and Larry Hama is still one of my favorite writers, and is a huge inspiration to me as an aspiring writer. But it is not impossible to have a good GIJoe story without him. Someday, I kinda hope I'll be allowed to write one. Maybe even two! For my money, I don't think Marvel would give GIJoe a fair shake today like they did in 1982. IDW seems to have found the magic with Transformers doing a main continuity, reprints, alternate universes, and lots of little extras. With even half those options working for GIJoe, I'd be pretty happy. I voted IDW, and if the scuttlebut around the net is accurate, we're gonna see it go that way.
  21. Probably not going to be a popular announcement, then. Phil kost, Military Advisor for Devil's Due, has said the licene is going to IDW over on joereloaded. That's not an official confirmation, as Phil doesnt work for either company that are involved with the new license. But Phil Kost isn't a liar, for one. If he didnt know, he'd just say he didnt know. If he says IDW's the one, I'm gonna say that's where our new GIJoe fix will come from.
  22. Yeah, the best thing about this news is knowing Larry'll make a nice payday for likely very little effort.
  23. Actually, guys, lots of interviews with the sunbow staff from back in the late 90s, and early 2000s tell of an alternate storyline for the movie. The idea was the search for "The Most Dangerous Man in the World", the man who created the Cobra organization. He was supposed to be a Karl Marx type, which Cobra nd GIJoe both try to find over the course of the Movie. Supposedly, it never got much deeper than that before they rewrote Cobra's Backstory from a Marxist revision to... sigh... bug-people from beneath the ice. And yes, if the Statue of Liberty battle was at any point planned for the finale, it was severely rechoreographed for the opening sequence. They absolutely did not simply shift it from one place to another.
  24. Not hating as much today as I was yesterday, but not loving as much as I did the day before. Hasbro's seriously slipping down the terlet here. It's not a matter of repaints. We're gonna be bogged down in repaints no matter what. But what we're seeing now is a glut of repaints of only 5 or 6 toys... And what's worse, we're not even getting repaints! Duke and the Cartoon CC are coming out in Waves 3 and 4, respectively, then being repacked in these sets with either little or no adjustments. In fact, I'm willing to be this CC is the final version of the mock-up we're seeing attached to Wave 4. And the repaints we are getting? Gold-faced Siegie, with a big black stain on his chest? Red hooded Commander? Hawk as Duke? As it stands, each pack only includes one purchaseable figure. The Joe pack has Grunt, but if the Firefly/Greenshirts pack has an even remotely similar soldier character, this stubble-faced repaint in the @ass is disposable, forgettable, and pass upable. The Crimson set is only worth it if I can't get enough basic Siegie from the single card releases. I'll be buying Wave 1 '08 Crimson Guards as I see them, but if this 3-pack costs what the single carded figure does on e-bay (after shipping), it'll be easier to snag a small detail of guards this way. and the "Officer" crapaint can always be customized into a Shadow Guard set. Lastly, the Cobra troop pack has a better realized Cartoon-based Commander, but as I said above, I have suspicions that this is the finished version of the Wave 4 Mock-up pics. This figure, with the white-striped helmet and the Ruby Crystals is a perfect realization of the Subow Commander design. But for my money, it's the cartoon-colored troops, of which I will buy a dozen, that highlight this pack. My vision of a basic Cobra Army is two 6-man squads of toy-based, comic-based, and toon-based troopers, each squad with a corresponding officer. Hasbro pulled it here, providing me with the last 1/3 of my army. Now I just want to see the Cobra Officer repainted in toy-accurate colors (black mask, black webgear) and I'll be thoroughly satisfied.
  25. Only speaking for myself, but I'm not complaining about the concept of resused parts, in fact, I'm calling for a Major Bludd using the HISS Driver torso... so I'm not asking the moon. We may only get one shot at Major Bludd, and Hasbro held him off from wave 2, and then again from wave 3... all so they could retool a bad head on what's mostly a repaint anyway? For the amount of time we're waiting, we expected more than a new head and arm on a Zartan body. If anyone deserves a brand new mold, it's Major Bludd, but the fans are willing to accept a partial repaint... just not *this* one. Not disagreeing, or even saying that's a problem. But Snake-Eyes is new tooling, so there's Hasbro "going bankrupt" without giving us a new character. Seems like a bad choice, if they're making new molds only when necessary... then this figure was not necessary. Secondly, Hasbro dropped large green into retooling Flint. Maybe not a whole figure's worth of money, but enough that he's Flint now, and not Duke with a new head. So I am complaining that I have to put up with a second rate Flint in his classic outfit, while a Tiger Force variant gets the true and correct arms. Not a complaint about reusing parts, but the choice of how to use them. My problem with choices like Cobra Commander, Baroness and the Python Troopofficer stem more from the feeling that they'd work better in comic packs and Boxed sets (We have the Viper, Officer, Trooper, Crimson Guard, and Copperhead... there's a 5-pack of repaints right there!
