I don't remember where, but the spikes I believe are referenced in Some of the alcala artwork.

Yeah really, I had no idea this is "actually" what Grayskull looked like...or is this just some artistic angle, it looks living here, anyways it's cute, but not for moi.

They are interpreting the Filmation Grayskull, which has more random spikes and such coming from it than the toy did. Also, some of the support stones look like legs in Filmation artwork.
