Ana Nogueira, an actress and playwright who is venturing into screenwriting, has been chosen to write the script for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a standalone film centered around the Kryptonian cousin of Superman. This project is currently being developed by DC Studios, although no director has been attached yet. Nogueira's deal for this film was recently finalized.

This is not Nogueira's first involvement with a Supergirl project. In 2022, she was quietly hired by Warner Bros. to write a Supergirl movie that was intended to be a spinoff of The Flash, which was in the post-production phase at that time. The Flash movie featured Sasha Calle as the heroine, and the goal was to launch a new DC film franchise.

However, these plans were seemingly abandoned when Gunn and Safran took over the reins of the reorganized DC arm. The project Nogueira was working on was discarded as the new executives focused on creating a fresh slate of films, separate from the vision of former DC Films boss Walter Hamada. Earlier this year, it was revealed that Supergirl would still be part of this new slate, but with no connection to The Flash movie. Instead, the film would draw inspiration from a comic book mini-series written by Tom King, published in 2021 and 2022, which aimed to redefine the character and present her as more than just a female version of Superman.

James Gunn has officially announced that Ana Nogueira has been chosen as the writer for the highly anticipated Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow film. Taking to social media, the co-head of DC Studios expressed his excitement and praised Nogueira for her incredible work on the adaptation.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is a standalone movie centered around Kara Zor-El, the cousin of Superman. This film is part of the ongoing DC Universe project led by Gunn and Peter Safran. Gunn has already been confirmed as the writer and director for Superman: Legacy, which is set to star David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan and is scheduled for release on July 11, 2025.

In the recent film, The Flash, Sasha Calle portrayed Supergirl. Initially, there were hopes for Calle to have a more significant role within the DC Universe. However, her casting took place before Gunn and Safran took charge of the comic book films, under the previous administration of DC Studios.

Possible, but Zaslav seems to be finally learning a lesson about that: filmmakers won't want to make films for your company if there's a distinct possibility that their films won't get released.

Insider sources have told Deadline that DC Studios is gearing up to hold auditions for the role of Supergirl. The talented actresses Milly Alcock, Emilia Jones, and Meg Donnelly are reportedly in the running. While there's a chance the studio might directly offer the role to a big-name star, it seems more likely that screen tests will take place next month.

James Gunn, the co-boss at DC Studios, is involved in the selection process.  Additionally, Supergirl is expected to make a cameo appearance in another DC project before her standalone film. The search for a director is still ongoing.

Gunn, along with co-DC chief Peter Safran, revealed the Supergirl movie, titled Supergirl, Woman of Tomorrow, at DC's studio press day over a year ago. This film is adapted from Tom King's comic book series released in 2022.

Milly Alcock is great and all... but I really like how much of a Supergirl Meg Donnelly already looks!!! If we were to get one of those three she'd be my pick (looks alone don't guarantee anything... but if she's already the voice actress she may be familiar with it enough to pull it off marvelously!)

Meg Donnelly would get my vote, too, but I can't say I'd mind if the role went to Emilia Jones, though. She was outstanding in Coda.

Screen tests for the Supergirl role were held yesterday, narrowing down the field to two actresses, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.  Multiple sources have confirmed that the field has now been narrowed down to Milly Alcock, renowned for her portrayal of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBO's Game of Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon, and Meg Donnelly, known for her role in Disney Channel's popular musical franchise Zombies and her voice work in recent DC animated movies.  Both underwent testing in Atlanta with DC Studios executives James Gunn and Peter Safran present during the auditions.

Alcock emerged victorious in the competition against Emilia Jones, known for her role in CODA, and Meg Donnelly, who lent her voice to Supergirl in DC animated films like Legion of Superheroes and Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part One.

Just like when all roles are cast, I'll just have to wait and give them the benefit of the doubt and see how they do. I think that we all have our "fantasy casting" for a lot of these roles, but what can you do?

The intention is for DC to commence filming the movie in the fourth quarter following the completion of James Gunn’s Superman, currently being filmed in Georgia for a theatrical release on July 11, 2025. DC executives Gunn and Peter Safran are serving as producers, with DC EVP Chantal Nong as the executive producer.

Deadline has announced that Matthias Schoenaerts has secured the role of the antagonist in Warner Bros/DC's Supergirl, which is inspired by Tom King’s 2022 comic book series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, illustrated by Bilquis Evely. Milly Alcock will portray Supergirl in the lead role.

Within this comic book series, the antagonist is Krem of the Yellow Hill, who murders the father of a young alien girl, thereby involving Supergirl in the ensuing conflict.

The screenplay has been drafted by Ana Nogueira, with Craig Gillespie at the helm directing the subsequent installment in the "Gods and Monsters" Phase 1 of the DC Extended Universe, overseen by James Gunn and Peter Safran. Filming is scheduled to commence in January in the United Kingdom, with a theatrical release set for June 26, 2026.

Gunn and Safran serve as producers, while Chantal Nong, the executive vice president of DC, takes on the role of executive producer.

Has Lobo been in any DC movies before? I never kept up with the DC stuff to the same degree I used to pay attention to the MCU. Now it’s more like the “Me don’t wanna CU” to most of their offerings. I liked all the Guardians movie though so I am not apposed to seeing how Gunn handles an entire universe.

He has not. The only official live action Lobo was on that Krypton show and was...ummm...not so great.
