Amazon Studios Developing 'Criminal' Series Based On Ed Brubaker's Comic Books

Recommended Posts

Sources from within have informed Deadline that Amazon Studios is finalizing deals for Criminal, a TV adaptation of Ed Brubaker and artist Sean Phillips’ bestselling crime comic book series.

The project is being described as an interlocking universe of crime stories based on Criminal writer Brubaker's award-winning comic book series.  Brubaker will serve as executive producer and showrunner.

Nick Pepper, Amazon Studios’ Head of US SVOD TV Development and Series – Wholly Owned signed Brubaker into a development deal back in 2019 and, along with EVP Development King, put Criminal in development at the indie studio.  Pepper and Matt King, Head of Tentpole, Genre, and Universe Development of Wholly Owned content, are pushing for Criminal to be developed.

Brubaker has received numerous accolades and won both the Eisner and Harvey Awards for Best Writer five times.  For DC Comics, Brubaker overhauled Catwoman with artist Darwyn Cooke and was the co-creator of Gotham Central.  He changed Marvel’s Captain America including the creation of the “Winter Soldier.”  Television credits include serving as Supervising Producer on HBO’s Westworld, and, functioning on Disney+’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and was co-showrunner of Batman: Caped Crusader, the animated series from executive producers Bruce Timm, J.J. Abrams, and Matt Reeves, which had a straight-to-series order from HBO Max and Cartoon Network.

Now that's cool.  All the volumes I've read have at least been pretty interesting, and the finale of the first vol. still sticks with me even though I haven't read it since the original publication years and years ago.

I actually never read any of this, but I'll certainly give the show a chance when it comes out! I've enjoyed other stuff I've read by Brubaker.
