Preview images to the first episode of The Last Of Us that premieres on January 15th on HBO and HBO Max.

THE LAST OF US takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal and heartbreaking journey as they both must traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.

The nine-episode first season of the HBO Original drama series THE LAST OF US debuts SUNDAY, JANUARY 15 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and will be available to stream in 4K on HBO Max.

The series premiere of THE LAST OF US drew 4.7 million viewers across linear and HBO Max platforms on Sunday night in the U.S., based on Nielsen and first party data. This is HBO’s second largest debut, behind only “House of the Dragon,” since “Boardwalk Empire” premiered on the network in 2010, before HBO programming was broadly available on a streaming app. Sunday night’s performance was nearly double the season two debut night for “Euphoria,” which went on to average 19.5 million viewers per episode in the U.S. Sunday night viewership for an HBO series typically represents 20%-40% of the show’s total gross audience per episode.
 
THE LAST OF US was also a hit on social media, with the series trending #1 both in the U.S. and worldwide on Twitter Sunday night. To date, season one teasers and trailers have amassed more than 100 million views globally. Additionally, the first episode of the series’ companion podcast hit #1 on Apple’s TV & Film chart in the U.S. within 24 hours of its release.

Episode 2 of THE LAST OF US tallied 5.7 million viewers Sunday night, up 22% from the series debut. This marks the largest week 2 audience growth for an HBO Original drama series in the history of the network.

The episode's 5.7 million viewers across HBO and linear telecasts in the U.S. is an additional one million viewers vs. last week, based on Nielsen and first party data.

After one full week of availability, Episode 1 is now tracking at 18 million viewers, up nearly 4x from its premiere night audience.

HBO drama THE LAST OF US has been renewed for a second season. The series from co-creators Craig Mazin (Emmy(R) Award-winning creator of HBO's "Chernobyl") and Neil Druckmann (creator and writer of the award-winning "The Last of Us" franchise and Naughty Dog Co-President) marks HBO's second largest debut, behind only "House of the Dragon." Episode 1 has now surpassed 22 million viewers domestically, up nearly 5x from its premiere night audience.

Episode 2 of THE LAST OF US tallied 5.7 million viewers across HBO Max and linear telecasts in the U.S. Sunday night, based on Nielsen and first party data, adding more than 1 million new viewers vs. the series premiere. This 22% jump marks the largest week two audience growth for any HBO Original Drama Series in the history of the network.

THE LAST OF US was also a hit on social media, with the series trending #1 both in the U.S. and worldwide on Twitter during its series debut. To date, season one teasers and trailers have amassed more than 100 million views globally. If season two is going to be based on the second game, I'm gonna tap out after season 1. I don't want any part of the second game or season.

I don't think they are going to get through the whole first game within the first season.  I never played the second game but I know what happens to Joel and Ellie...

Episode 4 of THE LAST OF US delivered another series high Sunday night, with 7.5 million viewers across HBO Max and linear telecasts. Viewership was up 17% from Episode 3 last Sunday and 60% above the series debut night in January. Viewing is based on Nielsen and first party data. The series has grown its audience each Sunday night with the release of new episodes.

Episode 4 of THE LAST OF US, titled “Please Hold to My Hand,” “showcases Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal as impressively malleable performers” and is where “the emotional stakes are raised,” per IGN. The New York Times heralds "Bella Ramsey’s multilayered performance" in this episode as "so pivotal to this story" while A.V. Club states Pedro Pascal “has a chance to spread his wings with glimmers of humor and warmth.” Rolling Stone notes it’s a “terrific” episode that is “essential in the larger picture.”

THE LAST OF US Finale Draws Series High Of 8.2 Million Viewers, Growing Consistently Throughout Season Against Enhanced Sunday Night Competition

The season 1 finale of THE LAST OF US set another rating high on Sunday night, delivering 8.2 million viewers across HBO Max and linear telecasts, based on Nielsen and first-party data. The series is now averaging 30.4 million viewers across its first six episodes, with the first episode approaching 40 million viewers in the U.S. Outside of the U.S., THE LAST OF US is now the most-watched show in the history of HBO Max in both Europe and Latin America.

THE LAST OF US was a hit amongst fans and critics right out of the gate. Debuting to 4.7 million viewers in January, it has shown consistent growth throughout its first season despite enhanced competition from live sports telecasts and awards broadcasts. Sunday night's finale audience marked a 75% increase in debut night viewing compared to the series premiere.
