James Gunn Says They Are Going With A Younger Version Of Superman For Their New DC Plan Which Means Cavill Is Out...Again

James Gunn has once again taken to Twitter to talk about the latest happening in the world of Warner Bros. DCU. In his latest tweets he says they have a plan in place for DC now which they will start revealing early next year. They say Superman is on the slate, however they will be focusing on an earlier period in the characters life and going with someone younger to play the Man of Steel. So Henry Cavill is out, at least for now.

Gunn went on to say they have had some really good meetings with the actor to discuss what kind of possibilities they might have for working with him in the future.

Henry Cavill confirmed the news via Instagram about the actor not playing Superman in the next installment of the Superman franchise.  This comes after news broke that DC bosses Peter Safran and James Gunn informed Cavill that a new script was written about Superman's early days and Cavill will not be playing the part.

I just don't understand what is going on with WB and their DC movies- they just can't seem to get it together. Why are they going with a younger version of Superman? For what? And why not place Cavill in the movie? I get he cannot play a younger version of the character, but why does it have to be a different thing altogether?  I hated reading Cavill's tweet. Why do they think a reboot is necessary, even if it, it does not mean they need to remove the actors. Otherwise it's not the same universe.

Great news, but can't he still be Batman? I don't understand why reboot the actors who played these characters, to me I feel a reboot won't work.

I loved Cavill as Superman and am so bummed we won’t get more. I get Gunn is trying to move forward and steer the ship so I can’t get mad at him, but still bummed to lose such a good actor for the part.

What I think your seeing here is a good ol' Hollywood power struggle play out. Its pretty clear the Rock saw himself as the savior of the DCU and thought Black Adam was going to cement his power in Hollywood. Cavill's return as Superman was at the behest of The Rock before Gunn and Peter were brought in. The Rock and Cavill are both repped by the same agent. The mid-credit scene in Black Adam was totally a last minute thing they threw in and they had no real plan where to take that in place. It was done to try and hype the Black Adam movie. It wasn't a coincidence IMO that scene "Leaked" out a week before the movie opened.

Then Gunn and Peter were brought in to run DC and that threatened The Rock's standing. If Black Adam had truly been a big box office success then you would probably be seeing things play out differently, but it wasn't. The movie might bring in a minimal profit if it's lucky but by no means was it any kind of huge success.

I think Gunn and Peter want to start fresh doing away pretty much all ties to the Snyderverse and the characters associated with it, while also sending a message to The Rock and his people that he isn't calling the shots.

Unfortunately as all this plays out in the public eye, all that's gonna happen is an already divided DC fan base will become even more divided, and no matter what they do there will be a large segment of that fan base that is unhappy.

The Black Adam film was the weirdest tonal shifting sort of film I've seen in a while. It was also a waste of Dr. Fate.

The entire time I watched the film, all I could think was, this is just an egotistical sort of thing. It has little to do with moving forward the existing film universe.

Cavill seems to be someone who genuinely loved playing superman, and devotedly loves comics, and where the stories might be able to go.

I hope he gets back his role in the Witcher.

It definitely seemed more like just a by-the-numbers vehicle for the Rock to get into super hero movies than a legit effort to being the character to the big screen.

Disappointed about Cavill but hey, maybe MCU will grab him and do something with him.

While I will miss Cavill as the Man of Steel, I totally understand where they're going with wanting to get some younger talent in the rotation to carry these franchises for years into the future. That is something I am constantly critical of with some of the castings in the MCU. A successful franchise should have an actor who can carry it for at least 10 years. I didn't like the casting of Mahershala Ali as Blade because he'll be damn near 50 or over when/if it comes out and I can't imagine he'll be able to maintain the image of an immortal vampire for too much longer after that, so I get it. I have the same concerns with the casting of a 50 year old Dwayne Johnson and the 70 year old Pierce Brosnan and their ability to play their parts into the future, though they both did amazing jobs in Black Adam. Brosnan, in particular, knocked it outta the park, but it was about 30 years too late. A lot of people don't like it and we'll definitely have a little trouble adjusting to new actors taking the place of the actors we are familiar with in those roles, but if DC wants to create a greater cohesive DCU to continue into the future for any amount of notable time it is a necessary evil.

Well this is sad news, for 2 reasons, 1 Henry was an awesome Superman and he loved playing the character, and would have given his best with the right tools, would have liked to see more Henry, 2, We really don't need anymore origin movies, please no origin young Super Man movie please, we all know his story and if you don't for some reason google it.

I said it before I'm all for rebooting and starting again, I think that's the right idea, but don't remove great actors, keep the good ones and start again.

if James wants to make a new young superman movie, he should just instead give us Brightburn 2, still waiting for that.

This is a shame.  While I wouldn't say his turn as Supes "worked" I always felt he was a good fit for the character, just failed by sub-par writing/directing.  It saddens me that he never really got his chance to truly shine in the role.

I get the need to start fresh, and jettison all the bad blood.   He was a great Superman but it is time to move on.

Honestly, I wish they'd let Snyder finish.  Give him four more hours to finish his story.  And then reboot.  I think a reboot, particularly a less bleak reboot, would ultimately be good.  But the dceu was only about 60% done with a really great epic

DC does this all the time... Perfect example is the Batman movies.  Every time DC gets a new actor to play Batman, they have to have a Batman showing how he became Batman...

It's (fortunately) been nearly two decades since we've had an actual origin story for Batman in the movies, though.  Batfleck debuted quite late in his Batman's career, and Pattinson started 2 years in (early, but still established as Batman).

Yesterday news broke that Henry Cavill would not be reprising his role of Superman for Warner Bros. rebooted DCU which have left some wondering if the actor would decide to keep playing Geralt of Rivia for the Netflix Witcher series. Back in late October it was announced that Liam Hemsworth would be replacing Henry Cavill In 'The Witcher' Season Four after word came out that a new Man Of Steel movie was going to be made with Cavill which we now know won't be happening.

According to Variety, they have confirmed Cavill will not be returning and that folks can continue to expect Hemsworth will take over in season 4.

Warner Brothers told Henry that Superman 2 was a go in October. He quit The Witcher based on this commitment. Two months later, they pull the rug out from underneath him publicly. What a disgraceful act. Cavill has been treated terribly by WB/DC. Somehow, WB will be writing a big check to Henry for a pay or play clause. Besides Nolan's Batman movies, the first Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Man of Steel, Shazam!, & Reeves' The Batman, all the other DC movies have been disappointing IMO. Suicide Squad 2 had its moments. Very sad turn of events.

As far as I read the fact Superman 2 was being planned wasnt the only reason he left The Witcher, I think it was a combination of things, one being his schedule would have become even tighter with Superman 2 (and his return to the DCEU), and the fact that he wasnt happy with the direction The witcher show was heading (He's a big witcher fan and I heard he wasnt happy with all the changes that they were doing for the show that werent in the original source material), in any case it sucks that because of DC and their dumb sh*** we wont get Cavill as Superman or Geralt.

My only hope is that Marvel moves in and hires Cavill for a big role in the MCU, that would be a big slap in the face with a white glove to DC from Henry, cause lets be honest DC treated him like Crap, and IMO out of all the Snyderverse actors he was the only one that actually was good (he wasnt a great superman but not because of him, it was more of how they decided to make superman, I think he would have been a great Superman if given the right treatment), Gadott is overestimated in my opinion (she can barely act at all), we all know how petty and problematic the guy who played Cyborg was, Ezra miller is a ticking timebomb (and terribly cast as flash), Fatfleck wasnt a great Batman, and I like Jason Momoa but casting him as aquaman was a big mistake.
Im not a Marvel lover / DC hater, I would love for dc to get it's #$## together and actually make great movies but I just think DC mistreated Cavill and he deserves better thus why I hope he gets cast in the MCU which would give DC a big middle finger!

That move sucks and making me more depressed than I should be. Cavil was a great Superman and despite mixed opinions over his movies, his casting was perfect and he deserved a proper conclusion. I don't like the way we get a new Superman, James Gunn is a good writer for *certain types* of projects, like Guardians and Peacemaker but even that wasn't without serious flaws because dick/sex jokes get annoying and boring after certain points because sadly this is his peak as a writer, he's not the type of writer who can write Superman, there was no reason why Cavil couldn't be in that Superman movie, but Gunn feels confident he can make a new world even if he alienates existing fanbase, I guess after being canceled, fired and then magically rehired your ego grows to an amazing degree.

If anything we need an actual visionary director to write this new take not a "funny edgy" director, only with an actual visionary we can justify the reboot (like Denis Villeneuve). Either way, PR-wise James Gunn is messing up big time, first, it was the whole uncertainty over reboot or not, then it was  Wonder Woman cancelation, and now Superman,  it will be especially funny if he leaves his project and his wife's role still intact in the new universe. But mark my words, WB will be sold again in 2 years to Universal and it's no incident James Gunn's contract is exactly only for 2 years. And New Heads will bring a new vision again.
