Superman & Lois series producer for Warner Bros. TV has released a statement saying that Superman & Lois series regular Jordan Elsass will not be returning for the upcoming third season of the CW's DC series.  His role, Jonathan Kent, will be recast.

According to Deadline, the decision was made after Elsass did not report back to work by the deadline given to the cast to reconvene in Vancouver where Superman & Lois films.

Quote

“Jordan Elsass has notified the Studio that he will not be returning to Superman & Lois for season three due to personal reasons. The role of Jonathan Kent will be recast.”

According to sources, Elsass has been dealing with serious personal issues, some of them possibly related to mental health, that the series’ producers became aware of. There is also conflicting information about whether Elsass left or was let go.

I'm generally not a big fan of characters being recast, but sometimes it's just in the best interests of both the individual and the show. In this case, I truly hope that young Mr. Elsass gets whatever help that he needs and can continue to live a long and healthy life and career. I really enjoyed him as Jonathan on the show and hope to see more of his work down the line, but his personal and mental health always has to come first of course.

I got no problems with recast. What a lot of people don't understand in today's market is that it's supposed to be about the story. The actors they cast should honestly be irrelevant if the story is good. Sure you don't wanna cast an 80 year old man as Superman and you want someone whose a fairly good actor to pull of the part but that's the job of the casting director to find the fit. If a person leaves that role for any reason, there's no reason they couldn't find another fit. Jordan's Jonathan Kent, though well done, is not the be all, end all definitive version of the character. He's not irreplaceable. He's not the only person capable of doing the part. Most actors will say the don't want to be defined by one role, anyway. Best wishes to Jordan and I hope he gets the help he needs.

I'm probably in the minority, but I wouldn't have actually minded all that much if they had recast even Black Panther after Chadwick Boseman passed, rest his soul. Sure it would have been a little awkward seeing another person in the role, but again, if the story/movie is good it would have been fine. Boseman was great in the role, but the character was there long before him and he didn't define the character and the character didn't define him. In all honesty I really think he had more memorable roles. Never casting the character again does not honor the role of BP. Never allowing anyone to play the character does not honor legacy of the character. Letting someone else play the part and allowing them to do the character justice and give it the respect the last person is the right way to honor the character.
