Warner Bros. Discovery CEO Talks DC's 'Ten Year Plan', Batgirl Canceling & 'The Flash' Release

Recommended Posts

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav talked about his commitment to building a 10-year plan for DC during a recent second-quarter call.

When questioned about the recent canceling of Batgirl, the CEO told investors,  “Our ambition to is to bring Warners back and produce great, high-quality films..."  “We can build a long-term sustainable growth business out of DC. We’re not releasing a film before it’s ready.”

Zaslav wanted investors to know that “The focus is to make these films as good as possible.”  The CEO believes that it's a waste of money in making expensive direct-to-streaming movies. “There’s no comparison when you launch a film in motion picture theaters,” he said. “Expensive films going to streaming … can’t find an economic value for it.”  He wants DC to focus more on theatrical releases and that there will be several movies set to be launched with shorter release times.

Investors wanted to know how Zaslav feels about all the trouble with Flash star Ezra Miller and he informed them that he was still behind the movie.

“We have seen The Flash, Black Adam, and Shazam 2,” the CEO said, “We are very excited about them. We’ve seen them. We think they are terrific, and we think we can make them even better.”

Sources are claiming that the Flash movie recently did a test-marketing screening and it received amazing marks and was highly accepted by audiences.

Warner Bros. has proven time and time again that they're not worthy of owning DC Entertainment / DC Comics. They should really sell them or spin them off so that they can be run by a team with true vision for the product across all business lines. They've proven completely inept at doing that in-house.

I really think the intent is to become as much a factor in the Cinema world as Marvel is with Disney. Whether we agree with these cancellations or not if it leads to a more cohesive and coherent DC Universe I'm all for it. Outlets are reporting today the Supergirl movie is getting axed as well. As of now, I really don't feel any of these projects are creating all that much buzz so why bother to start building on another storyline or franchise that's not going to progress past the first movie? WB's stance to this point is that all these movies take place in their own little universes but that's not what we wanna see. We want all our heroes crossing paths and intermingling and fighting together. While I woulda loved that they continue the Snyderverse we gotta understand a lot of these aging actors, such as Cavill and Affleck (best Batman ever, IMO) have been on hold forever and it's most likely those characters will have to be recast by the time they the DCCU gets is proverbial head out of it's ayass, so if it's time to go back to square one or possibly use Shazam, Black Adam and Patman as the starting block then lets go. I'd like to get some sort of Infinity War/Endgame grand masterpiece from DC sometime in my lifetime. And if they're gonna do that they need someone with deep pockets to get this thing going, and that's exactly what WB has.

In a perfect world Sony would surrender or sell the Spider-Man license back to Disney and buy DC. They obviously have a decent record with making some good superhero movies with Spidey, but after him they got nothing. This BS of digging into his Rogue's Gallery and trying to make applesauce outta rat isht isn't working. If they were to get the entire DC Universe I bet they could give Disney a run for it's money. As much success as they've had with all three (maybe two) Spider-Man runs, I'd love to see what they could do with Batman.

I dunno about Affleck but Cavil is only 39 and he can play Superman for at least 15 more years.  I also used to think that Sony giving Spidey to Marvel would be great but after seeing how bad phase 4 is I'm glad there are two companies that work on Spidey.

But this is literally what happened? DC  along with WB was sold to Discovery and the whole leadership and old regime is basically gone and the first time since 2015 we get the announcement of 10 year plan for DC movies.

The fact that Phase 4 is so terrible is the exact reason a better company should be able to take advantage of the situation on hand and try to overtake what Marvel is doing, cuz to be honest I don't think Marvel even knows what the hell Marvel is trying to do. I'm fairly certain a large part of bursting the entire Multiverse and Quantum Zone concepts wide open is so Marvel can pretty much backtrack or all out make anything up when they decide to go hard with the licenses they just picked up form Fox such as X-Men and Fantastic Four. Questions like where were the X-Men and where did they come from? Multiverse. Where was the World's Smartest Man when the Avengers were trying to figure out how to undo the Snap.? Quantum Zone.

Long story short. Right now is the perfect time for WB to get something started while Marvel is back on it's heels and only getting worse by the seconds.

how is marvel "back on its heels" and getting worse by the seconds"? phase 4 has been extremely successful and thats gonna continue with black panther 2. disney netted what? almost $3 billion worldwide this phase so far. and then phase 5 has avengers and guardians, two of the most profitable movie series the company has. whats there for another company to take advantage of?

Well I guess yours and my definition of extremely successful is just different. Sure, I'm sure Disney made plenty of money off Phase 4, as Disney does, but for the most part the MCU, in the post Iron Man/Captain America era looks like a convoluted, confusing mess that looks to have implemented the entire Multiverse, Quantum Zone and Infinite Timelines concepts to somehow make sense of everything at a future time that they haven't figured out yet. It's nothing new, no big deal, it's what they do in the comics. I'm just saying right now is the time for DC to come up with come with a plan that the fans can get on board with to create one cohesive universe where all of the heroes can exist, while Marvel decides what the next step is. I'm sure BP2 and GOTG3 will kill and Marvel will be back in form once Fantastic Four and The Mutants get folded into the mix.
