The DC Super Powers 5" John Stewart Green Lantern figure from McFarlane Toys is now currently listed on the Walmart website. The figure like we have seen before lets you add it to the cart but not check out, but hopefully that will change soon.

This figure is a Walmart exclusive. Thanks to Curtis for the heads up.

I assume 5” is what they consider to be the scale of the original Super Powers line.  So this is cohesive with our vintage collection.  That’s the only scale that makes sense in this case

It's not the same scale as the original line. The 80s line was 3.75" scale but the figures were scaled correctly, so Joker, Brainiac, and Darkseid were much taller than Batman or Superman and Penguin was shorter than all the rest. This new retro line is 5" scale which is why most of the standard characters are much larger than their 80s counterparts. The fact that Batman Who Laughs is the same height as 80s Joker is a fluke. Mcfarlane can't make this line the same size as the original because Spinmasters holds the 3.75" license, so 5" is as close as he could get and not get sued.

I really hate that the Batman who laughs is in this series, just seems so wrong, because it's such a new character, but I get it, it's super popular people love that Batman who Laughs, I mean it does look like it works in this line surprisingly, still for some reason I can't stand that they put him in here.

The original line was 4.5”, not 3.75”.  Compare any original Super Powers figure to a figure from a 3.75” line and the Super Powers figure will be significantly larger.

And while the McFarlane figures may be listed by Walmart as 5”, this just seems to be shorthand marketing.  The Fresh Monkey Fiction Longbox Heroes line, also intended to be compatible with Super Powers, is listed by BBTS as 5” while FMF themselves call it “A retro styled 4.5” Comic Book Action Figures line.”

The reality of why the McFarlane figures are not in scale is much simpler then licensing constraints.  McFarlane does not know how to do scale.  Within their own Multiverse line scale is all over the place, so it is no surprise that they have the same issues here.

No, the original Super Powers were not 3-3/4” scale.  3-3/4” scale were GI Joes, Kenner Star Wars, etc. and an average human vintage Super Powers character (like Green Lantern or Flash for example) looks to be around an inch taller than an average human in those other mentioned 3-3/4” lines.  Side by side a standard height 3-3/4” Joe or Star Wars figure is over a head shorter than an average vintage Kenner Super Powers figure and even one of the shortest of the Kenner Super Power figures like Robin are taller than the extra tall 3-3/4”  figures like Kenner Chewbacca.   (and I just went an grabbed multiple examples of all of these lines and put them side by side just to make sure I’m not misremembering).  So vintage Super Powers were significantly larger than 3-3/4” scale and somewhere more akin to 4.5” or 5” scale.

Now I agree these new figures seem to be a smidge too big (haven’t seen them in person yet but it’s clear from pictures) and I assume you’re right that McFarlane probably had to make them a tad bigger due to the size ranges that are designated to be in Spin Master license territory.   But if anything it’s more like maybe the vintage scale was closer to 4.5” while Todd’s is closer to 5”  (which is an unfortunate discrepancy but no where near as far off as 3-3/4” vs 5” would be ).

I think the real gap here, is that McT does not stick to the real glue of the original KENNER series: Jose' Garcia Lopez doing all the graphic inserts, and card illustrations/ mini posters, and often even the mini comics cover. The main thing lacking in the MCFARLANE reproposition, is coherency. Sculpts are clearly less detailed, reuses are easy to spot, faces do not have the same grace (they have a neanderthalensis ratio: large nose bridges, prominent and distancied eyes, every proportion is far away from that Garcialopezsque sinthesis of realism that sculptors effort clarly tried to mantain unaltered). The main boost to a kid imagination, was that everything was perceived as part of a common and recurring aesthetics, even in minicomics artists style (alternated Mike De Carlo, Dick Giordanio and jose Garcia Lopez himself, mantained a cohesive style, often working together on DC comics titles). Darkseid is fine, upcoming deathstroke is fine, batman who laughs is good, and nightwing seems a meh, but all the others are very laze parodies of what wKenner's original toy line was an outstanding sample, very afar from the others in terms of fine art sculpting and narrative suggestion.
