Prime Video is in talks to develop a live-action series based on the hugely popular ancient mythology-themed game God Of War.  The adaptation comes from The Expanse creators/executive producers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby and The Wheel of Time executive producer/showrunner Rafe Judkins as well as Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions.

The God of War franchise from Sony’s Santa Monica Studio spans a total of seven games across four PlayStation consoles. The action game series launched in 2005 on the PlayStation 2, with the first God of War. At the center is ex-Spartan warrior Kratos and his perilous journey to exact revenge on the Ares, the Greek God of War, after killing his loved ones under the deity’s influence. After becoming the ruthless God of War himself, Kratos finds himself constantly looking for a chance to change his fate.

Following several titles on various PlayStation consoles including the PS3 and the handheld PSP, Santa Monica Studio brought new life to the franchise with the 2018 game on the PlayStation 4. In it, Kratos comes to the Norse wilds where he gets a second chance at fatherhood with his son Atreus. The installment a slew of honors at the 2018 Game Awards, including Game of the Year.

Fergus and Ostby are credited with co-writing the script for Marvel's Iron Man.  Judkins was a writer-producer on ABC’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.

I've never played the games and I'll probably get the 2018 release that was just released on PC but I believe the series adaptation will be based on the 2018 release where Kratos will be with his son.

Most likely as thats the most fresh in peoples minds but the greek based games were so good. I highly suggest/recommend playing them. They had some of the most epic set pieces and bosses. One where you fought Cronos where his fingernail was bigger than you.

Prime Video today announced that it has ordered God of War to series. Co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios in association with PlayStation Productions, the live-action series is based on the critically acclaimed PlayStation video game by the same name, created by Santa Monica Studio. God of War will premiere on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.

The series follows Kratos, the God of War, who, after exiling himself from his blood-soaked past in ancient Greece, hangs up his weapons forever in the Norse realm of Midgard. When his beloved wife dies, Kratos sets off on a dangerous journey with his estranged son to spread her ashes from the highest peak - his wife's final wish. Kratos soon realizes the journey is an epic quest in disguise, one which will test the bonds between father and son, and force Kratos to battle new Gods and monsters for the fate of the world.

"The God of War is a compelling, character-driven franchise that we believe will captivate our global customers as much with its expansive and immersive worlds as its rich storytelling," said Vernon Sanders, head of global television at Amazon Studios. "We are honored to share in the adventure of exploring the God of War mythology in such a momentous way with Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, and Santa Monica Studio."

"We are so proud and excited to be working with our friends at Amazon Studios and our partners at PlayStation Productions to adapt this beautiful and heartbreaking game into a premium live-action series," said Katherine Pope, president of Sony Pictures Television Studios. "Rafe, Mark and Hawk are crafting a transportive series that charts a path through the ancient mythological journey of Kratos."

"God of War is one of PlayStation's most awarded video games, so we're excited to partner with Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios to bring our beloved franchise to fans and new audiences in a bold and authentic way," said Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions.

Rafe Judkins (The Wheel of Time) serves as showrunner and executive produces the series. Academy Award Nominees Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Iron Man, Children of Men) will serve as writers and also executive produce. Santa Monica Studio's Studio Creative Director, Cory Barlog will also serve as executive producer. Additional executive producers include Playstation Productions Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan, Santa Monica Studio's Yumi Yang as well as Vertigo's Roy Lee. Santa Monica Studio's Jeff Ketcham will serve as a co-executive producer.

There's sooo much Norse stuff on tv these days. An adaptation of the earlier games with Kratos fighting gods and monsters in ancient Greece would be more welcome. At least IMO.

I agree. Those old games are dated and prime material for retelling. Unfortunately that isn’t going to happen

These games (GoW, Uncharted, Last of US) are great BECAUSE they're video games. When you take the interactive element out. They become pretty generic movie ideas.

Uuuughhh, kill me now. Prime is primed to take another beloved property destroy it through alternate media. Hopefully the game creators maintain some sort of control over the creative process as to not let if succumb to the typical failings of other Prime shows.

You never know, I'm sure the new show based on the Last of Us will be a smash.

The God of War series, inspired by the popular ancient mythology-themed video game from PlayStation, is set to restart its development after nearly two years of work. According to Deadline, showrunner and executive producer Rafe Judkins, and executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus, have departed from the project after finalizing several scripts for the first season.

The studios are said to be pursuing a fresh creative direction and intend to assemble an entirely new writers' room for the series, which continues to be a significant asset for Prime. Cory Barlog and Yumi Yang from Santa Monica Studio will continue to serve as executive producers for God of War, alongside Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, Yumi Land, and Roy Lee from Vertigo.

I’m going to be blunt.

If I wanted entertainment news, I would go to Variety.

Or IGN.

Or Deadline.

Or literally anywhere else on the internet.

I go to Toy News International for toy news.

That’s the brand. That’s the promise. That’s the entire reason the site exists.

And lately? It feels like that promise is being tossed in the trash.

Why am I seeing generic TV headlines?

Why am I scrolling past movie trailer coverage?

Why is a toy collector site suddenly pretending it’s an entertainment blog?

There are thousands of websites chasing the same recycled streaming-service headlines. Thousands. You cannot out-Variety Variety. You cannot out-IGN IGN. You will not win that race.

What made Toy News International valuable was focus.

Collectors don’t go there for casting rumors.

We don’t go there for episode recaps.

We don’t go there for “first look at upcoming streaming series.”

We go there for:

• High-res product images

• Sculpt breakdowns

• Articulation analysis

• Packaging details

• Pre-order alerts

• In-hand reviews

• Convention reveals

That’s it.

That’s the niche.

And when a niche site abandons its lane to chase broader traffic, it doesn’t grow — it dilutes itself.

It feels desperate.

It feels like someone looked at analytics and decided, “Hey, entertainment headlines get clicks,” and suddenly the identity of the site started eroding.

Here’s the reality: collectors are not casual drive-by readers. We are obsessive. We are detail-oriented. We bookmark sites because they serve a very specific purpose. The second that purpose gets cluttered with irrelevant noise, the value drops.

Hard.

I don’t want to sift through three articles about a streaming show renewal just to find out if a new action figure has improved ankle pivots.

And honestly? It cheapens the brand.

“Toy News International” doesn’t mean “Pop Culture News With Some Toys Mixed In.”

It means toys.

If the site wants to pivot into being a generic entertainment aggregator, fine — but then call it what it is. Don’t pretend it’s still laser-focused on collectors while burying the actual collector content.

Niche sites survive by serving their core audience better than anyone else.

The moment you start chasing the same scraps as every other entertainment blog, you stop being essential.

And once you’re no longer essential to collectors?

You’re just another tab people close.

Very blunt indeed. But I must admit I was also wondering why there are more and more articles about shows and movies that have no relation to toys. You could argue a tangential relation insomuch as there are Mortal Kombat & God of War toys... but these articles are not about the toys and more like advertisements for the shows & IMO clutter the feed. Sometimes I backtrack to TNI to re-check an article I have looked at several times, to check out the pics again and read more of the discussion - to think about and consider the toys being discussed and shown. But stacking several articles about shows and movies push toy discussions off the front page.

LOL, Let me be blunt with you since you were so gracious to be blunt with us. Live with it. We've always reported Entertainment news related to things we cover in the realm of toys. We've been around for over 25 years and do just fine so I think we know what our readers want a lot better than you do. You wasted more energy making these posts about how you don't like Entertainment News then you would have just simply by scrolling past it if its not your thing.

LOL, also do you run over to those sites you mentioned and #$## at them when they report action figure news?

Hey I appreciate the entertainment/business/financial aspects, especially when you consider their impact on collecting. It's all connected. Sometimes it's good to walk outside if the walls feel like they're closing in though, lol.

But back to this ill-fated live action GoW:  these pictures are not selling me, it looks like a comedy skit or something.

Amazon Prime? After they ruined Lord of the Rings and Fallout, completely not understanding either franchise... yeah, I trust them as far as I can throw them. Especially since they are not even telling the story of the proper Kratos, but the tired loser single dad Kratos version from the last two games which was a pretty bad story altogether and also threw pretty much the whole Norse pantheon under the bus... Why is it that most modern media has to turn Odin into a villain?

As for this image, my first thought was "Is that Paul Giamatti?" Because Kratos now looks like a short, pudgy bald guy.

Frankly, they should do what ICV2 does, and have a "category" button on top. There should be "Toy News" and "Entertainment News", if they really want to report about stuff like this.
