DC Films Developing 'Black Canary' Movie With Jurnee Smollett

Recommended Posts

Deadline in association with Cinelinx is reporting that Warner Bros. and DC Films are developing the Black Canary movie for HBO Max with Jurnee Smollett in the lead role.

Plot details are unknown at this time but the film is a spin-off of Birds of Prey, which featured characters Harley Quinn, the Huntress, and Cassandra Cain.

The project is being written by Lovecraft Country creator Misha Green with Sue Kroll producing under her Kroll & Co. Entertainment banner.

I was pretty happy reading this the other day. During the slog through the total mess that was Birds of Prey I found Smollett's Black Canary character to be easily the most interesting and compelling part of the entire movie by a long shot. I wanted more of her (and also Rosie Perez's Renae Montoya) and less Harley and all the other crap. I found Lovecraft Country somewhat hit or miss but generally well done, and Jurnee Smollett one of the best things about that, too, so I'm looking forward to this.

This is literally the proof WB has no interest in making money. Harley is the MOST profitable female lead DC has right now besides WW, and she couldn't make them money. This will flop. Make a Superman sequel, make a new Batfleck movie...

Stop trying to make movies for niche markets.

They kind of are doing it. We get one more Batfleck appearance in the Flashpoint movie and then he's out. He doesn't want to do it anymore, since it led him to drink the first time around.

Superman is all over the place with 2 movies featuring black Supermans being made, and possibly Cavill being in one of them. I think they need to stick with Cavill, since any black Superman movie will bomb spectacularly. They have a hard enough time getting people to see Cavill, and people tend to like his portrayal, so there's no way the alternative will be successful. It's being done for digital back pats on Twitter by people who have no interest in going to see the movie. Once Hollywood figures this out, maybe they'll start respecting these characters more and stop blaming the fans when they flop.

So the movie that squandered Black Mask and royally tanked at both the box office and blu ray sales has spawned a sequel of sorts (albeit on HBO Max)?  It took James Gunn to redeem suicide squad but I don't see the same happening here.

Not even a week can go by smh.  Hopefully mods will address people and their "identity politics" bs comments.  Just say you don't want a film with a Black chick and take the ether you rightly deserve for your bigoted mentality.  It's 2021...y'all need to stop.

YES she was the best part of Birds of Prey. So glad someone out there is listening to fans.

I'll get behind this as well!!  Smith was probably one of the best things about BoP.

Salty people:  JLU is out on DVD/Blu Ray...

Back issues never went anywhere.

Get you fix there.

You sure about that my dude?  You can see the future? I would propose that for every salty person not going to see a "Black Superman" there may be others will. Story and other factors will dictate the merits of the flick, not the ethnicity of the cast.  Unless you are suggesting every yt superhero flick was spectacular (they dang sure aren't...and I can prove it with two words: Fantastic Four). Don't get lumped in with those people my dude.  I will call you out.

Not a one of you can present a valid well thought out reason why Smith's Black Canary, a nonwhite Supes, Naomi, or any other POC move won't work..other than y'all bothered that the person is not yt.  The hatrix is real.

I'll keep saying it...y'all the reason why we can't have nice stuff.  Give it a rest.

BoP bombed at the box office because it released just as COVID was striking, I didn’t see it because of it. Then it came after the hot mess of Suicide Squad, which certainly was a roadblock for this one. BoP was way better than SS, not as good as The Suicide Squad, but fun. Really fun. I don’t understand the hate it gets. It’s almost as if they didn’t see it or something.

The movie stands/falls on its own merits.  On the whole it was a good vehicle to Harley and really let her shine (seeing as she was one of the bright spots in SS...Waller and Deadshot being the other two).  Was it a quirky flick; sure... yet I walked away feeling it was it was a Harley comic bought to life.

I can deal with valid criticisms of something if it has merits.  There is none of that here.  Jurnee Smollet did a wonderful job as Black Canary.  She has the star power to carry a film (I am quite confident these naysayers haven't seen her in LoveCraft Country or any other films she's been in) and it'd be great to see her back as BC especially with Misha Green at the helm...hell even have Huntress show up and I'll be happy.

What we are seeing here is thinly disguised bigotry for a character because she's Black.  Full stop.  That's it.  There is nothing more to it.  And if they get ether back for their $#!tty opinions they cry.

Speak for yourself my dude.  Don't watch it and move on.

But thanks for proving my point.  A superhero movie full of white folks isn't always a key to a guaranteed smash.  Elektra sucked all kinds of hard and it was littered with "non identity politics" entities.

Misha Green is a stellar director.  Jurnee Smollet is a stellar actress.  Already right there the foundation is set for a potentially good flick.

Meanwhile...you can binge watch Challenge of the Superfriends/JLU if that's your cup of tea and you want people to look a certain way.  No one is stopping you.

Suit: Oh noooooo! Harley Quinn bailed on us! Did anyone have a back up plan?

Peon: Yeah, uh.....how bout Black Canary?

Suit: Who?

Peon: Y'know, that other lady that was okay in Birds of Prey: The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn.

Suit: Wha...? You mean the Harley Quinn movie?

Peon: Errr....yes sir.

Suit: Eh, I wouldn't know. I never saw it.

Peon: Me either, but I hear she wasn't the worste, and you know she's the sister of that one guy from Empire.

Suite: Oh, yeah! He was pretty good as Rhodie...y'know, before he thought he was the star and asked for way too much money.

Peon: No, no, not that one, the other one.

Suit: Oooooh, the soap opera guy? Yeah, he's alright, I guess.

Peon: Wha..no the other guy. Yknow, the guy that did that thing outside the Subway.....with the rope....and the bleach.

Suit: Yesssss. That guy! Great performance. And he's got all the street cred we need. Let's go with that guy.

Peon: No, I was talking about his sister.

Suit: Oh, yeah, she's okay too. Let's go with her. Now I gotta go, I'm late to my Bat-Cow movie pitch meeting?

Peon: Wait, what? You actually have to pitch that stuff?

Suit: Naaaaaaah....we just sit around and get hammered and tell each other how rich and awesome we are.

Peon: Aaaahhh, yes. Yes, you are VERY rich, sir.

Suit: You mean rich and awesome. Right?!

Peon: Yes, yes, of course, sir.......I hate my life.
