As the SAG-AFTRA strike continues, Paramount Pictures still entertained a packed house at the San Diego Comic-Con in Hall H, by showing off new footage from the upcoming August 2nd, Nickelodeon animated feature, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.

Attending the panel included the director Jeff Rowe and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles co-creator Kevin Eastman, who gave some exciting news that Paramount and Nick have secured rights to air the original cartoon series from the 1980s.

Check out a clip from the new footage above and a full transcript below:

Quote

Turtles initially set out on a quest to ‘stealthily’ shop for groceries for Master Splinter (Jackie Chan). On their way back home, they see breaking news of a heist being conducted by the villain Superfly, voiced by Ice Cube, and decide to stop off in Brooklyn to watch Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. After returning home to a furious father, Splinter tells how he met the turtles in a puddle of glowing ooze.

Master Splinter (Jackie Chan) advises them to avoid contact with the human world. Why’s that? There’s a flashback when the big rat Splinter with his baby turtles in tow, is attacked by a Times Square crowd. After being attacked by humans for being different, he decides to teach the boys self-defense through kung fu movies.

Later on, the turtles are fooling around on a rooftop with ninja stars and accidentally hit April O’Neil’s helmet. Her scooter is stolen as she is distracted by the yelling at the turtles. The turtles rush to get the scooter back and defeat a group of thugs. April catches up to find her scooter safe, and the entire gang is defeated. She sees the turtles hiding in a huddle and agrees to hear them out over pizza.

Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies are looking to go far with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as both companies are developing a sequel to 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem' and creating a two-season animated series.  Paramount+ has already worked the deal to stream the spinoff series, titled 'Tales of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.'

'Tales of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,' will be a 2D animated series with two seasons currently in the works, taking place between the events of the feature film 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem'and the forthcoming sequel. Reprising their roles from the film for the series are Micah Abbey, Shamon Brown Jr., Nicolas Cantu, and Brady Noon as the four Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.  The series is being created by Nickelodeon Animation and Point Grey Pictures.

According to the official description, the Turtles will be challenged like never before as Leo, Raph, Donnie, and Mikey each go it alone for the first time. Faced with new threats and teaming up with old allies, the Turtles will discover who they are when they don’t have their brothers at their sides.

With the animated adventure 'Mutant Mayhem' set to open theatrically on August 2nd, Paramount and Nickelodeon chief Brian Robbins has made rebooting the Turtles a top priority for the networks.

Jeff Rowe will be returning to direct the sequel, after directing and co-writing 'Mutant Mayhem.'  Point Grey Pictures will be producing the sequel and will also be producing the Paramount+ series.  Chris Yost and Alan Wan will be serving as executive producers and showrunners. Lukas Williams will be overseeing both the series and sequel for Point Grey.

How many times is this series going to be rebooted? I guess an infinite amount.. We already have a crap ton, whats another?

I firmly believe that is the reason why this property has been around for so long.  They reinvent it every so often for new audiences.  If this still looked like "our" Turtles from the 90's, it would have been dead long ago.  Personally I think that is the right way to go.  I was not into Bay Turtles or the animated version where Ralph was all buff and the "leader" of the group, but I did like the animated version from around 2010.  The good thing about this approach is that, if the current incarnation is not to your liking, then hang tight because another one is on the way.

I am looking forward to this movie.  My wife doesn't care, all my Turtle friends say they aren't excited, but I'm planning a day where I sneak off on my own to see this in theater.  I'm optimistic for this one!

I agree 100%. The 2012-ish show breathed some extremely noticeable new life into the brand. The reboots are very obviously what keeps the brand alive.

The 2012 show brought so much popularity back to TMNT that I don't think the brand would still be as big without it. Hopefully the new movie does the same for the new decade.
