Neil Gaiman, author and executive producer for Netflix's 'The Sandman' expressed his feelings about the newest additional cast members to the series and these roles.

Quote

Every afternoon I get an email telling me that there are “dailies” from The Sandman ready to be watched. It's the best bit of the day. Once every couple of weeks I get an email letting me know that there's a finished episode waiting for me to watch it. It's the best bit of the month.

The Sandman is being made, and it's... well, it's The Sandman. Which is the best thing of all.

You know that The Sandman is based on my comic book series of the same name. A rich blend of modern myth and dark fantasy in which contemporary fiction, historical drama and legend are seamlessly interwoven, The Sandman follows the people and places affected by Morpheus, the Dream King, as he mends the cosmic — and human — mistakes he's made during his vast existence.

You all know that Tom Sturridge (he/him) is Dream of the Endless, Gwendolyn Christie (she/her) is Lucifer, Sanjeev Bhaskar (he/him) and Amid Chaudry (he/him) are Cain and Abel, Charles Dance (he/him) is Roderick Burgess, Vivienne Acheampong (she/her) is Lucienne, and Boyd Holbrook (he/him) is The Corinthian.

But there are more parts to be announced. And I thought it would be fun to tell you about some of them, and the thinking behind them.

DEATH – Dream's wiser, nicer, and much more sensible sister. Significantly harder to cast than you might imagine (well, than I imagined, anyway). Hundreds of talented women from all around the planet auditioned, and they were brilliant, and none of them were right. Someone who could speak the truth to Dream, on the one hand, but also be the person you'd want to meet when your life was done on the other. And then we saw Kirby Howell-Baptiste's (she/her) audition and we knew we had our Death.

DESIRE – Dream's sibling and everything you want, whatever you want and whoever you are. Desire is also trouble for Dream. Families are complicated. We had barely started looking when Mason Alexander Park (they/them) reached out on Twitter, and threw their hat into the ring. We were thrilled when they got the part.

DESPAIR – Desire's twin, Dream's sister. She is the moment when all hope is gone, the bleakest of the Endless. Donna Preston (she/her) will be playing her, and her performance is chilling and sad. You feel her pain.

JOHANNA CONSTANTINE – Eighteenth Century occult adventuress, John Constantine’s great-great-great grandmother. This Sandman character became so popular that she even had her own spin-off series. I created her to fill the role that John Constantine does in the past. When we broke down the first season, given that we knew that we would be encountering Johanna in the past, we wondered what would happen if we met a version of her in the present as well. We tried it and the script was sparkier, feistier, and in some ways even more fun. So having written her, we just had to cast her. Jenna Coleman (she/her) gave us the Johanna of our dreams – tough, brilliant, tricky, haunted and probably doomed.

ETHEL CRIPPS – Roderick Burgess's love, John Dee's mother, is a small but vital role in the comics, but she became more important as we told our story. In the 1920s and 30s, she is played by Niamh Walsh (she/her): a betrayed and determined young woman seeking to survive. In the present day, now a woman of a hundred identities and a thousand lies, she's played by the brilliant Joely Richardson (she/her).

JOHN DEE – Ethel's son is dangerous. He was driven mad, long ago. Now he's out and on a quest for Truth that may destroy the world. We needed an actor who could break your heart and keep your sympathy while taking you into the darkest places. We were lucky that David Thewlis (he/him) took the part.

Now we're shooting The Doll's House, the second big Sandman storyline. It's the story of:

ROSE WALKER – a young woman on a desperate search for her missing brother, who finds a family she didn't know that she had, and a connection to Dream that neither of them can escape. We needed someone young who could make you care as she ventures into some very dangerous places. Boyd Holbrook's Corinthian is waiting for her, after all. Kyo Ra (she/her) achieves that as Rose.

LYTA HALL – Rose’s friend, a young widow mourning her husband Hector. Rose doesn't know that Hector has started showing up in Lyta's dreams, though. Or that strange things are happening. Razane Jammal (she/her) is Lyta, and she's terrific.

UNITY KINKAID - Heiress, Rose's mysterious benefactor. She has spent a century asleep. Now she's awake, having missed out on her life. She's played by Sandra James Young (she/her).

GILBERT – Rose Walker's debonair protector. A dab hand with a paradox and a sword cane. Stephen Fry (he/him) is a National Treasure, and we forget sometimes that he's also a remarkable actor. Seeing him in costume and make up on the dailies made me blink: it was as if the comic had come to life.

MATTHEW  – Dream’s trusted emissary. A raven. I expected our animals to be CGI, and was both taken aback and thrilled when the dailies started coming in, and there was Dream talking to... well, a raven. But ravens don't really talk. The question was, could we find an actor who could make you care about a dead person who was now a bird in the Dreaming – one who isn't certain what's going on, or whether any of this is a good idea? And could we find a voice performer who was also the kind of Sandman fan who used to stand in line to get his Sandman comics signed? The answer was, we could if we asked Patton Oswalt (he/him). And Patton was the first person we asked, and the first person we cast, the day before we pitched The Sandman to Netflix.

Of course, there are more delights and nightmares cast than I've listed here, and we have a few more secrets up our sleeves. I can't wait until you can start watching.

The casting for Death is so so wrong. Again not following the source material.

Gender and race swapping of characters is the big thing to do now with all the events that have been happening in the past two years.  Tick off one person and cancel culture would be all over this series.

Why do you think they made Lucifer a woman in this series?

I can't believe that Jamie Chung (voiced Death in the DC Showcase animated short and was outstanding in that and was even better in Lovecraft Country) wasn't available to play Death, I can't believe it's really that hard to get an American into the UK for an acting gig, and if she did audition (I'd be damned surprised if she didn't), I can't believe that Kirby Howell-Baptiste was somehow better for the part. Pretty much everyone else seems like a great fit, although I'm not too keen on them apparently writing out John Constantine, but I do like Jenna Coleman.

Here you go again with your sideways BS.  It's frickin Death my dude...and Death can be cast however anyone sees fit.

I bet you had nothing to say about them casting yt people in the Mummy Flicks/Gods of Egypt,  Apocalypse in X-men, Batman was saving the Hebrews from Ripley, or Maximus building the ark for him and Hermione. These didn't follow the source material either

Dude, how about working harder on being decent (and consistent) instead of a powder possum.

I swear y'all people just CANNOT be intelligent or do better

Yeah yt folks have been doing it like since forever when  they figured out they hadn't offered anything important to society and had to steal other peoples accomplishments to feel important (see every Bible, history book, film, television, piece of literature  they had their hands on)

Yt folks have been color swapping people from jump (Hawkman, Apocalypse, Black Adam, etc) and now y'all want to be butt hurt about this?  Go read Sandman TPBs and get your mayo fix there if this bothers you so much.

The whole concept about Sandman is that these people CAN appear as whoever they want to for their own reasons.  Making Lucifer a female is more insidious.  Evil is evil because it gets you where you least expect it.  Who is gonna suspect a female until it's to late? And depending on how they want to run it...it makes the beef between Sandman and Lucifer more personal (as opposed to Satan being bothered by some petty insult Dream gave him in the comics that even Satan didn't really remember).

I'll warn all of you: you're gonna make JayC come here and shut this down if y'all don't stop with you sideways bs.

Because. I.  Will. Call. You. All. Out.

If you don't like the show...no probs.  We can hash that out all civilized and cool.  We don't even have to agree.

But being snow roaches.....yeaaahhhh y'all not gonna speak greasy and get away with it.

Ball is in your court fellas.  Can we be cool or do you insist on having goldfish memories and need to be reminded again and again that you will get push back for saying nonsense?

Jamie Chung is a national treasure (and she was a bright star in a bunch of bright stars on Lovecraft Country) and would have made a GREAT Death.  I hope (in missing out on this) more doors open for her and she lands a role that lets her do what she is so good at doing.

I agree with most of what you're posting. I really do.

I just think you cannot be asking people to do better, be intelligent, and working harder on being decent when you're insulting them.

Then again, a Moderator making those comments does look really bad for the site and I'm sure JayC won't appreciate it.

Nope, we aren't going to do that my dude.  You don't get to police my tone yet be silent at the initial offending action(s).  That's where this starts/stops.  Direct your energy at the bad actors...not the person responding to the bad actors (because NO ONE has gone at them).  We have been around this circle waaaay  to long and no one is telling these dudes to be better.

They "insulted" me.  You gonna address that?  You in solidarity with them for some reason that you feel compelled to address me but not sideways people?

Don't be that dude.  You can either join me and other decent people in trying to solve this OR you can be with them and be just another problem because you are enabling their foolishness by trying to lecture me.

I'm not wrong....they are.  I would not have said anything if they had been decent.

And if this makes you mad...then you wasn't "agreeing with most of what I'm posting" so lets not pretend.

It powder possums get to speak freely...so do I.

And you...don't get to tell me how to respond of you haven't said one word to them jokers first.

They damn sure wasn't trying to be better when no one was saying anything to them.  They was letting their bs spew with impunity even in "nice silence".

And the fact that a dude who is in the powder possum brigade and has said sideways bs, high fived your post....proves my point.  So who's side are you on?  They think you on their side right now.  You gonna let that stand?

I have spoken out before, and will do in numerous occasions, just because I didn't on this particular post doesn't mean anything. I'm just saying you don't stop wars fighting anymore than you stop insults by doing the same.

I must have missed the part where they insulted you. I tend to stand up against people being offensive.

I addressed you, not them, because I'm on your side. Because if we're to come on top, we have to make sure the future is better that what it was, not the same but on the other side of the scale. I don't want to crush people that haven't come around to seeing how the world can be better if we stopped being negative about change, I want to show them how it can be better so that they can come around. And calling people names isn't going to do anything but anger them and "justify" them to angry responses. We can be civil about this too. We must be civil about this.

On the streets? Yeah, let's protest and demand better things, defend ourselves. On forums? Let's try to have conversations. They're wrong, every adaptation must go according to the current context, no matter the source material. And while the world has started doing a better job with that, it still has ways to go.

I wish I had a connection to the source material or the actors here so that I could have a better opinion on how I think they will or won't do for the show, and then be blown away or disappointed. I don't, which is why I hadn't said anything to those being bothered by the changes.

What I will say is that I'm very disappointed in how @Outsiders as a mod has taken that side of the argument and imply that this has only been going on for 2 years, and that "cancel culture" is as evil as the acts they're condemning.

But it does mean something.  Each and every time.  I will say your position (ethnicity) in this is letting you play devil's advocate and wax poetic.  I am going to tell you: you not winning points with me.  Either you are going to join in solidarity all the way or you can be over there with them.  You feelings matter less than the legacy of bigotry and hatred in life and in other forums I face.  It takes quite a bit of nerve to plead peace from people who have had war waged against them.  Silence was letting these jokers feel emboldened...where was you then?  Was you calling them out?  Man you may want to head back to the lab and think real hard who you are talking to and what you are saying.  I will 100% assure you these sideways people laughing because you look like you fighting for them. I see it as well...and this will be my last patient reply to you.  Either you pick the right side or get placed with them.  Don't let your privilege of not being the topic of these insults get you lined up with them.

I must have missed the part where they insulted you. I tend to stand up against people being offensive.

Not surprising...you're yt.  You missed it.  I'm telling you it happened...and you're being yt and pleading ignorance.  Fine. Be with them then.

You aren't on my side.  You side is conditional by me saying what makes you feel comfy.  To hell with that.  If I waited on your discomfort the Black people here would be railroaded.  We've seen how slow y'all are to action if it don't affect you. Spoiler alert: these snow roaches won't be better...because they don't want to.  It's really not hard to keep the topic to relevant points.  But as we see...they habitually don't.  Civility is deserved when civility is displayed.  Get at your mayo brothers and talk to them about manners/civility/decency before you come at me.

Sorry to disappoint in how I stand against this issues.

I am white. I'm also mexican, so I am discriminated regardless of my white privilege (which exists and I'm aware of it). I am on your side, my people are killed and children are caged at the border. I will continue to look at you as being on the same side as me, even if you won't think I am.

I believe you were insulted, I can read the anger in your words. I never meant to imply otherwise, I just literally didn't see it explicitly and I don't expect you to show me where the insult lies implied.

I can understand everything, and won't intend to change how you try to solve this conflict, I was just expressing how I think we could reach a better agreement with the racists and misogynists on these forums. I've come to learn that most of it is ignorance that can be changed with conversations and learning, but that just may be from my experience and because of my white male privilege too.

I'm sorry I tried to change your mind on how to deal with people's ignorant comments. You do what you think it's best, and I'll keep doing what I think is best, in the end I believe we're both aiming at the same kind of outcome.

This that polyanna mentality that just belies the base nature of these people.  Why any sane person want to come to a agreement with them.  That would mean something they have said/think has some validity.

To. Hell. With. That.

Plus your privilege lets you have that idea.  They deserve nothing but the scorn and clapback they get.  Take that civility "conversation" talk to them.  Kumbaya with them.  People could stop this real quick....no one has.  Mods is in on it.  Let that sink in.

You are trying to give them a pass and seem to think somewhere in there is a person worth talking to humanly.  These aren't accidents, this isn't a act of not knowing no better.  Bruh it's 2021...no excuse to be like this.  Not ONCE have you made a individual unique statement to those clowns about the f'ed upness of their word/worldview.   They high fiving your responses....what the hell do you think that says my dude.  As far as they are concerned you are on their side...and you proving it every time you ignore them and talk to me.

@kILLMonger I'm sorry but I read your numerous posts and the only thing I'm seeing is that you want to point your finger that everyone is wrong and what you say is right.  I see members posting their own opinions and you want to jump all over them for being wrong and not agreeing with you but without backing it up with why they are wrong.  Just because I or someone else doesn't like who was cast for a series is our own opinion.  So what if I don't like who was cast for The Sandman series for Death or Lucifer.  It's my opinion...

I don't know you personally but I have a feeling that you want to tell everyone that what they are doing in life is wrong and they all should be doing it your way.  I heard a quote once from Axl Rose and it's true to this day...

Quote

"We wanna dedicate this song to the people that try to hold you back, the people that tell you how to live, people that tell you how to dress, people that tell you how to talk, people that tell you what you can say and what you can’t say."  "I personally don’t need that, I don’t need that #$## in my life. Those are the kind of people that have been getting me down. They make me feel like somebody, somebody out there is out to get me!” -- W. Axl Rose

Personally I have my doubts about whether this adaptation will be any good, based on how other recent gaiman adaptations have gone, but I’ll certainly give it a chance. And while in my head I tend to think if the endless as the chalk-white goth-styled comic depictions, I don’t really see any problems with some gender swapping and diversity amongst the cast members. It’s an adaptation so it is to be expected that it will deviate from the source materials in some ways, hopefully In ways that capture the spirit of the original work but that work better for the medium of episodic television

You think so?  Well enlighten us on how "cancel culture" has only been a thing for like 2 years?

Share with us the insight you have into Netflix on how they intentionally cast the series the way they did to avoid the "cancel culture" label totally ignoring talent/ability/etc.?

You can't...but you said it anyways.

So you don't know what you are talking about...because if you knew what you are talking about you would not have said the bs you said.

Actually if they wanted to be really faithful to the source material....there wouldn't be yt people or Black people.  They'd cast anorexic albinos because just about every Endless was glue white and scary hungry looking (looking at you Dream).

Snow roaches can post their opinions...they just shouldn't be shocked/whatever when people post opinions back and chide them for their stupidity.

We know powder possums are the OG "cancel culture" champions:

They canceled Native Americans.

Freedom for Black people

They cancelled correct depictions of historical figures in all forms of education and entertainment that weren't yt.

They cancelled seasoning

Cancelled common sense

Y'all cancelled decency

But in this show...you denigrated the talent and professionalism of actors who tried out and were selected to star in this show...because of "cancel culture."

Using bigoted/micro aggressive nonsense as a reason for not like something is way different than not liking something for a valid and relevant reason that can facilitate discussion or even friendly debate.

I can meet people on the latter.

I'll keep calling out the former.

If you don't like it...be better then.

Bruh you and Mako are frickin mods... out here acting like incels.

Now if this really is a incel group for entitled mayosapiens...go on ahead and tell us all now.  Y'all can have it. God willing your genetic information will continue to be spent in tissues and latex dolls so that your worldview will not pass on to your  kids and continue to stain the Earth when you are gone....

Own your BS...don't try deflecting to what  I'm allegedly doing in a attempt to gloss over the foul you committed from jump.

See my post above.  Yt people have been cancelling stuff from jump.  Just because you heard it on Fox News last year doesn't make it a new thing.  We could have sooooo much fun listing way more than I already did on the stuff mayosapiens have cancelled.

Google is your friend.

It's 2021...no excuse for you to be this sheltered/ignorant.

Zero chill for you to have used a term without any apparent inkling of what it means/how long its been in effect/who'd the biggest culprit.

If you are a child of the 80/90s especially....I know I  can fondly remember a certain political party/people group (read: they would both end voting for Trump in 2016) who tried to cancel Dungeons and Dragons, Heavy Metal, Harry Potter, Hip Hop music and whatever else made them clutch their pearls.

Bruh stop...

Well, for starters you were talking about gender and race swapping being the "big thing" because of what has been going on for the past 2 years, not cancel culture. To the race and gender swapping I'll say it's incredibly naive on your part to think so, we can go back to 2015 with Jane Foster Thor and the outrage, or Sam Captain America on 2014, or the casting of Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm, which is all more than 2 years, I'd go as far as Miles Morales on 2011. I'm sure you can keep googling and find plenty more examples for both comics, movies, and books, even games dating far longer ago, and see how and which people were complaining without even a trailer or reading a panel.

As for cancel culture, the term coined has been around for a year or so, but I'm sure we can see examples of that behavior from way before.  As for the "good" it's done, check the Weinstein case, or the Polanski, or any other that deserved to be "cancelled". And for the outraging crowd doing the cancelling, remember the James Gunn situation were he was "cancelled" and fired because of 12 year old inappropiate comments digged by the republicans because they didn't like how he was calling out Trump? Yeah, that happens both ways, not only to people being conservative. Cancel culture isn't about the casting in any show, it's about the persons' involved behavior in society.

By the way, Lucifer was also a woman in 2000's Bedazzled, so it's nothing really new for a biblical figure to be swapped.

I see the Weinstein or Polanski cases as a win for the justice system.

I'm not going to continue this here.  You are going to believe what you want to believe and I'll believe what I want believe.  As I said, it's my opinion about the casting of the series.  If you don't like it then that is your opinion.

I'll flat out ask... Are both of you Democrats?  Reason I ask is anytime I have a discussion among this situation and it starts becoming political is when I'm discussing the situation with Democrats.

I'm not a US citizen or resident, I don't stand with either party. I will say I've felt a certain level of repel from Republicans from a few years back... so yeah, not a fan of them. I will say that I've noticed that Republicans have a tendency to make political comments and then claim that the other side is the one making everything political.

But hey, what do I know, you probably didn't bring up "cancel culture" or race and gender swapping (which are political subjects) into this conversation about the casting of a show to be political and you were just posting your opinion... which happened to be political. You're a Mod, you know JayC prefers if the forums steer clear of politics because we're not gonna fix the world here, you should know better than to bring those things up. I would expect it from any other member, not an overseer.

Sure, it is, but it was brought up through what could be set as examples of cancel culture. I mean, Weinstein was in the business for over 40 years, and only in the past year was he sentenced and condemned? Cancel culture can have a positive power on society if harnessed correctly. The problem I see that people have with it is that it goes against inhumane attitudes, beliefs and behaviors... and they like getting away with them but can't anymore.

What in the actual hell does being a "Democrat" have to do with anything?  Decency has nothing to do with political allegiance....unless you want me to start aligning bigotry and racism to the Republican party (and it's REALLY easy).

I'll tell you this: I'm Black.  I am a sci-fi/comic book fan.  I'm sick of incels bringing in their thinly veiled bigotry because they are butt hurt about representation.  It's maddening that the best people can say is nonwhite actors get roles "because they Black/female/gay" and not because of their talent and ability.

How about you and every other mayosapien just work on being better because it's the right thing to do as opposed to hiding behind some bs "da Dems...." nonsense.

I don't have to be a Dem to feel what you say is horrible.
