DC Multiverse Gorilla Grodd Platinum Edition Figure Revealed

While this is another figure that has not yet been officially announced by McFarlane Toys, we got first wind of it coming last December where it was spotted in the background of one of Todd's videos.

Below is our first look at the DC Multiverse 7" Platinum Edition Gorilla Grodd figure. The figure was discovered in Mexico by Katy Pok. It's actually the first of these "Platinum" Edition figures McFarlane has done that is actually platinum colored. The previous figures have been done in gold or bronze colors. Of course the white or silver is in keeping with on the skins in the Injustice 2 video game for which this version of Grodd was originally based on, not to mention the regular version is already done in gold.

Other than the different color armor, this figure is exactly the same to the regular release version. No idea when it will see release here in the US or even when McFarlane Toys will get around to officially announcing it, but being it's starting to show up in Mexico already, I would say it will be fairly soon.

Cant say I didnt see this coming... altho not the part where its early released to mexico... but man he really loves variants. I dont recall him ever doing so many variants until this new rebirth of mcfarlane toys. I guess its paying off if he keeps doing them.. or its just mcfarlane blowing his wad and any extra is just cherries on top.

I think with the license articulated figures the repaints are necessary to regroup the tooling cost. At least you aren't stuck with a build a figure piece that forces you to buy a repaint.

It actually reminds me of the SOTA Street Fighter figures and the multiple sprites repaints.

In Mexico you said?, funny, I've never seen anything at stores other than the ugly animated style figures and a couple of Injustice Batman.

Those original series 1 figures are harder to find now where I'm at, and the various metal series and the John  Stewart Green Lantern are everywhere. There are dozens or possibly a couple hundred spread across the various stores where I'm at and you can find most of the figs with the exception of maybe Harley Quinn and the animated series Superman and possibly a couple of those early Batmans. Everything else is plentiful.

Sota definitely went overboard with those palette variants. I enjoyed the unique ones like glow in the dark and alt versions like dark sakura/evil ryu/shin akuma... but having like 4 regular colors was pretty dumb imo.

And yeah I know its just to utilize the molds cost. I mean marvel legends in a way is a bunch of variants just done well enough not to feel like the same characters. I am kind of surprised hes not incorporating the baf idea with the injustice line.. or even merging it with a baf wave. I cant think of any other company thats doing the variant game so hard than McFarlane is tho. Its either a gold, silver, alt color in general, different head, different accessories variants. It kind of seems blatant and lame.

Oh Todd tricked you because it's been so long...

I'd say hes the repaint overlord, he was pretty damn heavy into repaints since the jump, as a pretty huge Spawn figure collector I can say Todd was always pretty damn in love with variants, mostly every figure had at least 1 variant, some had way more, examples:  Spawn himself from the original line had a gold variant, an umasked variant, unmasked worm head, blue (instead of black) both masked and unmasked and a clear green (necroplasm), Violator had red, black, glossy black and gold variants, he also loved repacking the same figures with minor wee tweaks, the OG spawn itself actually has something like 16 versions, with differences ranging from literally a painted nub difference to weird cardback anomalies spread all across different countries and such

so it just seems new but its actually Todd's first trick in the book. I just think he thinks we all forgot about it.

I collected alot of spawn throughout the mcfarlane toys run, but I do recall alot of what you are saying. I dont remember it being so often and so early on. It also may be due to the fact that information and releases werent as known so quickly compared to today. The minute they are announced we automatically hear about it whereas back then it was through magazines months after they already had the things in production. I do remember some gold versions here and there and a few variants. Maybe its because today he doesnt have THAT many new figs out yet there are 6 variants to mk11 spawn as well as a bunch of new gold variants for alot of figures. I feel like he spread those variants out alot back in the day and had some be previews exclusives and stuff like that. But you are definitely right, this isnt really anything new from him.

yeah we definitely didn't notice as much back then, I mean we were younger, and they were spaced out enough (some not though), I mean they kept releasing the same figures for decades repacking, it's certainly different now with the news ready and available, then we'd have to wait for catalogs, or just plain walking into a store to see the new variants, plus we notice these things now really quickly.

Any idea where to buy this version?

Anywhere that sells DC Multiverse. I don't know if anyone will offer it as like a straight up purchase online or not.
