Do we know if this set is taking the slot of what is traditionally offered as the Playmates/Turtles SDCC exclusive at the Nickelodeon booth or is this an additional Playmates/TMNT item that would have been offered from Diamond all along (and thus there is probably another Playmates/Turtles product coming in what would have been that Nickelodeon booth exclusive slot)?

Either way I just preordered.  I really thought not going to the convention this year would mean probably saving some money but thus far it seems like at least from Diamond and GG the number of exclusives being offered are similar to any other year.

Probably as Playmates hasnt had much for TMNT since the new animated series has yet to be announced, but I can't say 100% they wont have another one.

It's a cool looking set, but is it just me or have they re-released these figures quite a bit over the years?

They have rereleased these several times as TRU exclusives I think?  Maybe these ones will be more like the actual original releases since they are advertised as having rotocast heads?

Yeah they’ve definitely done these figures a few times as store exclusives but I never picked those other releases up and I’m pretty sure this collector case is new which is a big selling point for me.

I also think I might want to display these carded retros side by side with the Super7 ultimates when they come out.

Not a bad price actually, unfortunately these things did not stand the test of time and Mezco and Super7 are knocking these things out of the park already.

Did you mean NECA and Super7??  Or is Mezco doing something with Turtles I’m not aware of???

Nope. It was a total mistake on my part. I had been looking at Mezco products earlier. Just had Mezco on the brain.

This was my thought, don't think I need to buy them again, I still have the ones from the 80s.. I'm cool

but a fun set none the less

I think for me picking these up is really just for the packaging.  The ones from my childhood are on display and in great shape (except for Micky’s nunchucks unfortunately) but they are obviously loose

Very similar to the 2020 SDCC Exclusive Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Retro set they released earlier this year, Playmates Toys is now offering a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Original Comic Book Set through Walmart. Like before the set includes figures of the four Turtles, Splinter and Shredder, this time repainted to look like their original Mirage comics incarnations. Each figure is individually placed on a black and white type cardback and then placed in a box made to look like the Turtle van. The set costs $39.97 and listed with a December 5 release date.

The Shredder figure looks like knock off, a weird mix of modern and vintage figures, indeed, but in the other hand the set is cheap.

Does anyone remember these unreleased TMNT figures from playmates? I really liked these sculpts, wish Playmates would do them with at least slightly better articulation like ankle rockers

Kinda sad. I mean Neca and Super 7 are cleaning up with Turtles (even though both are doing a half-@$$ed job of distributing them) and Playmates, the master toy license holder, is left limping along on these "gimmick" sets until the next incarnation of Turtles rolls around.

Just two bad this dumpster fire of a year has seen production of . . . everything delayed.

Except for the fact that Playmates master license entitles them to major royalties. All profit, no work. Then again, I'm with you. I want playmates to do something more. I don't know how much of the vintage remakes I actually want..... I'm thinking TMNT 1988 "MOTU ORIGINS STYLE" action figures is better. More articulation and slight variations. Thats a huge market waiting to be tapped. They will wait till NECA and SUPER7 gets close to the end of their runs, then, BAM!

Oh and I pre-ordered this, yes, go turtles XD

Yes they can do so much more, but it seems they are only into repaints and just selling kids toys based on new animated series, but If them being involved means no Neca and S7 then I'm ok with how things are rn, I doubt they can do things better than Neca and Super7

See, that's exactly the problem, in today's toy industry you may have one license divvied up among as many as five or six companies. A MASTER license means nothing anymore. It muddies the waters. You literally have licenses competing with THEMSELVES.

I think they actually thought Rise of the BS could be a huge seller for the youngster kid market. Neca and Super7 were to be for the older audience. Which makes them totally separate markets. So why not make more money on top of everything and not do a lick of work? Problem was, Rise did terribly, as most all TMNT fans predicted. Leaving Playmates to sit around like...okay we're done with that, we can't do the same #$##, so we have no market to make TMNT stuff unless we compete with NECA and Super7. Which like SPIDERS said is a bad idea. They could try again to appeal to the younger market with a new show gimmick. But that's way harder than it sounds. TMNT 1988 "Origins style" would be a competitor to the adult market as well. So the only option seems to be just sitting around until Neca and Super7 slow down. Rise could have been successful. Even if it was made for a much younger audience than the 2012 series. But they changed too much...okay not the place for a Rise diatribe lol.

what they should do is make some figures based off the IDW comics. hell they could even style them in the rise style to cross sell. or go back to the 2012 series and just continue with those. make the missing figures. it still bothers me we didnt get an old man raph figure.
