After global passionate fan calls to action and the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement, HBO Max and Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that it will exclusively world premiere Zack Snyder’s director’s cut of the Warner Bros. Pictures/DC feature film Justice League in 2021. Snyder surprised fans with the news this morning during a live online commentary of his film Man of Steel with Henry Cavill.

#ReleaseTheSnyderCut first became a passionate rallying social media cry among fans in 2017 and has not let up. From countless press articles and hundreds of thousands of social media mentions, it became a powerful global movement among cinephiles and comic book fans.

“I want to thank HBO Max and Warner Brothers for this brave gesture of supporting artists and allowing their true visions to be realized. Also a special thank you to all of those involved in the SnyderCut movement for making this a reality,” said Snyder.

“Since I got here 14 months ago, the chant to #ReleaseTheSnyderCut has been a daily drumbeat in our offices and inboxes. Well, the fans have asked, and we are thrilled to finally deliver. At the end of the day, it really is all about them and we are beyond excited to be able to release Zack’s ultimate vision for this film in 2021. This could never have happened if it weren’t for the hard work and combined efforts of the teams at HBO Max and Warner Bros. Pictures,” said Robert Greenblatt, Chairman, Warner Media Entertainment and Direct-To-Consumer.

“When Zack and Debbie shared the extraordinary vision of where Zack wanted to take Justice League, my team and our counterparts at Warner Bros. took it as a mission to solve the many issues that stood in the way,” said Kevin Reilly, Chief Content Officer at HBO Max, President, TNT, TBS and truTV. “Thanks to the partnership at Warner Bros. and the relentless pursuit of the entire WarnerMax team we are able to deliver this incredibly exciting moment for Zack, the fans and HBO Max.

“Thanks to the efforts of a lot people, we’re excited to bring fans this highly anticipated version of Justice League,” said Toby Emmerich, Chairman, Warner Bros. Pictures Group. “This feels like the right time to share Zack’s story, and HBO Max is the perfect platform for it. We’re glad the creative planets aligned, allowing us to #ReleaseTheSnyderCut.

In Justice League, fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

The Justice League screenplay is by Chris Terrio, story by Chris Terrio & Zack Snyder, based on characters from DC, Superman created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. The film’s producers are Charles Roven, Deborah Snyder, with executive producers Christopher Nolan, Emma Thomas, Jim Rowe, Ben Affleck, Wesley Coller, Curtis Kanemoto, and Chris Terrio.

I'm a huge Zack Snyder fan and am so happy that his film is actually going to be available to those that want to see it. Regardless of how some people feel about him, I think everyone should be cool with someone who was hired to do their version of something being able to do exactly that and making it available.

I think anyone would watch it if it were free. The real question is how many of you are going to sign up and pay for HBO Max to be able to watch it???

mehh, I dont have much to say about it without getting some people's feeling hurt, Ill see it eventually for free but Im not that excited about the news, partly because its too little too late, It seems like they are moving on a different direction with these films anyway, and now that affleck is out (not that I really cared for him), and Cavill seems to be going as well, the movie be it Whedon's or Snyder's version doesnt seem like it matters much in the long run.

Now talking about the Snydercut and the movie It might change a bit in tone and some parts of the story but I dont think itll make a difference in the long run, the movie itself was flawed for many reasond, for me as I said Affleck though had its moments I didnt really like him that much (seemed like he was phoning the performance in), Never really liked how Superman had been handled in this Universe (and snyder was behind Man of Steel), didnt really care how Aquaman was presented in this universe (dont like the whole Broquaman, they should have went with a different actor and how they wrote the character, and save Momoa and that personality for Lobo), I cant even begin with Flash (and there are also rumors of him being canned) he seemed to dumb for me Barry was sort of a goof but had his weight, this one had no maturity whatsoever, and I never really got on board with Gal Gadot as WW (in her case the way the character is written is good in my opinion but her performance is a bit bland and also un impactful), but those are just my thoughts, overall I dont think that the problem with the DCEU was the bad press or the change of ideas and all that but that they tried to do too much in too little, It seemed like they wanted to build a big franchise universe without really having to put the grundwork on it, I mean the meeting of the Trinity, Doomsday and the death of superman in the Second movie of the universe, then imediately after that going for the start of the JL and the war against Darkseid, too soon at least let us care about the characters/actors before we see them die/face off against the big crisis.

In any case im happy for all those people who really really wanted this to happen, I dont really care anyways and hope after the Reboot (flashpoint) they think of how to build up the universe better.

This seems unprecidented and it's cool to see it happen. to your question @JayC I think if there's some kind of reasonable price, and maybe some parrellel interesting content on HBO Max, i'd be willing to watch it.  Just watching BvS Directors cut , there's little bits , here and there that add to the movie, so I can imagine with something like JL, I think in the case of this movie, there's an opportunity to see that,... at the very least here's hoping for a different color palet for the "final scene" and a Superman Mustache!

I don't think this ever would have happened without the virus.  Production is halted or shut down on countless movies and tv shows and theaters are a major uncertainty.  I never thought WB would invest more money to finish this thing (and it was not finished), but that was before everything screeched to a halt.  It's gotta be cheaper (and safer) to finish something that already mostly exists than go out and film something new right now.  It's definitely cheaper to make it available on a streaming platform rather than putting it in theaters and stamping blu-ray discs.
I never cared about this, but I do hope that the people who do will put their money where their mouths are and subscribe to HBO Max to watch this instead of pirating it, because if WB doesn't get the kind of numbers they want when this is released, it's highly unlikely that they or anyone else will do this kind of thing again.

I'm curious to see what this version entails, sucks in a way you gotta be into HBO. They should have released it earlier, don't know why it's taken so long, I guess it's a moot point by now but wish we could have seen it in the theater. It gets me interested if you have Aquman calling for it to be released.

I kinda disagree. Call me cynical if you want but I think this whole thing has been planned since #ReleaseTheSnyderCut started, in fact I think that was all a grass roots marketing campaign fueled by the studio itself. Now it going straight to HBO Max instead of a theatrical release may have been due to the virus, but I've always felt the studio had every intention of releasing this and never really bought into the fans made it happen stuff.

I don't buy the whole "fans made it happen" thing, either, but WB execs will put it on them if it doesn't bring in the subscription numbers or whatever other metrics they're looking for.  I gotta tell you, the idea that the studio would push something like this, meaning they would have had the intention of investing tens of millions more dollars more into something that already lost them a lot of money, that just doesn't make sense if it's not something they have to do. It's just not good business, but that's pre-pandemicDuring the pandemic, however, with production on virtually everything shut down or on hold, and the Snyder cut of Justice League being something that can mostly be finished by people working from home, now it doesn't seem like such a bad investment and a relatively easy, safe, and even cheap way to get something "new" out to people.

Now that's the big question, right? I wonder if HBO Max is viewing this as their  "killer app"..... something to dramatically drive sales, like how Mandalorian propelled Disney+ into another stratosphere........ my two cents? They're wrong. There's a very vocal, but small, group who are dying to see this. I'm sure WB has done the math on cost to finish vs. projected income from original online content.... paging, "Trolls: World Tour" success...... but 2021 is a long way away, and this is a film viewed as a failure. It's not the same scenario ..... I know I for one I won't pay money........ for me it's due to hating how Zack views and uses Superman. It's one fan's opinion, one wallet that won't open for this, but my prediction is that I'm not alone. Whether I'm right or not, will be fascinating to see how it plays out....and honestly, I wonder what Marvel in movies or on DisneyPlus will be by then as counter programming!

Question is, will there be new Action Figures to coincide with the Snyder Cut? Rereleases maybe. I never got the mafex cyborg.

One of the changes reportedly coming with the Justice League Snyder Cut movie is that we will actually get to see DC Major bad guy Darkseid. Director Zack Snyder has taken to social media to start teasing his project slated to debut on HBO Max next May by giving us first look at the the villain.

I am incredibly curious to see how this comes out. It makes me wonder if it ever really existed and since the movie wasnt great, DC was like lets recut it and add some scenes and hopefully fix and essentially have a do over that will help make their image better. Kind of like in video games these days, when a new one comes out and is controversial say with loot boxes, it tarnishes the brand and company and with all backlash, they end up taking loot boxes out or adding something new to make it overall better to help fix the problem that happened. Snyder cut always felt like a myth more than it actually existed so its really an interesting move on DCs part.

It existed, but all the Snyder fans insisting that it was somehow totally complete and finished and all the efx were done yadda yadda...they were obviously wrong.

If he'd made a decent movie in the first place there wouldn't be all this flurry about "oh i promise the REAL footage got edited out" or "left on the cutting room floor". I don't care whether its this guy or Ridley Scott or whoever....you don't get to turn in a sub-par project and then blame any and everyone but yourself for its poor performance. Yes Ridley...looking at YOU.

Justice League failed ( too harsh? Maybe "didn't do as well") because DC/Warner tried to compete with Marvel, and they didn't need to. Marvel took its time to develop its characters and storyline. These idiots tried to cram as much as they could in under a year or so, due to 1.) their arrogance that "everyone knew" their characters, so it wasn't necessary to give a fulfilling story, and  2.) their greed in thinking they could recoup billions at the box office the way Marvel did.  I don't think this HBO extra fee ploy is gonna work for them but maybe its best to just learn from what they did wrong, go back and do it right. They've got the tools to make a great franchise.
