Star Trek: Picard Is The Star Trek I've Been Waiting For

Recommended Posts

The first episode of Star Trek: Picard titled “Remembrance” is everything I had hoped a new Star Trek series would be, while at the same time giving me a Star Trek series like none I had seen before.

For anyone who is a fan of The Next Generation, the opening scene alone is worth the price of admission. The series takes place roughly 20 years since the events of Star Trek Nemesis and the first Chris Pine Star Trek movie, whose events do play a role in this series. One of the things I am loving most about this show (which was what I hated about Discovery) is how the creators have taken the time to really learn their Trek history and incorporate it into this new show. The first episode alone is filled with so many little easter eggs and nods to previously established events in Trek lore, that it really makes you feel like this is a continuation of Trek and not an attempt to reinvent. This is further helped by the familiar places and background settings seen throughout the episode.

They also do a pretty good job of catching us all up to speed on what has happened with Picard and the Federation since we last saw them.

However, this show is very different from any previous Trek series, in large part because the primary focus is on just one character and not the ensemble cast. I suppose that might change some as the show progresses, but I really think the show is aptly named in that regard.

Another difference I see is how the Federation and Earth are portrayed. Some long-time Trek fans might not like this as much, but we seem to have a clearer window into Earth complete with a reality that may not be the perfect future utopia previously portrayed. Humans might still have a few flaws that need working out. Don’t get me wrong. Earth still seems like a pretty good place, just not perfect. I did have to laugh that television news networks apparently are still a thing even in the 24th century… or is it 25th now?

Having seen only one episode so far, it’s still too early to say for sure, but I definitely feel this series has the potential to become one of the best Star Trek series to date, a position held by Star Trek: Deep Space Nine for me.

If you want to better understand some key plot points in this first episode, I recommend you check out the Star Trek Next Generation episode titled The Measure of a Man (Season 2, Episode 9), Star Trek: Nemesis, and the first Star Trek Chris Pine movie. These aren’t critical to following what happens in this episode, but I think it will give you a deeper appreciation for it.

Grade A+

Another Trek show by people who don't know Jack about Trek. But hey, by all means, brown nose away.

10 year old me is grinning from ear to ear while sitting in a Nintendo chair with mt dew and playmates Enterprise--D, this show is great and this "mako" needs to step down like the show he draws from.

*Hey Mayko, Enterprise was good but cut short. The unaired 5th season needed to happen, it didn't so let trek happen.

If Mako has actually bothered to watch it and didn't like it then thats fine, though backing up his dislike with specifics of why he didn't like it would be good for the sake of argument. That being said the people involved with this series including Patrick Stewart himself I think knows Star Trek pretty well.

So I've seen the first two episodes of Star Trek: Picard and I have to say I agree with JayC.

I'm not saying this is the best Trek show I've ever seen but it sure is the best I've seen in the last 20 years or so....give or take a few years. At least I'm enjoying it so far 🤞.

I saw the pilot, and while I wasn't sold on everything, I liked it a lot.  It's too early for me to say that it's the best Star Trek since DS9, but I do think that it's clearly better than Discovery.
