George Lucas Felt "Betrayed" By Disney And Didn't Like Star Wars: The Force Awakens Becaue It Had Nothing New

According to THR, Disney's CEO Bob Iger has said in his upcoming new book titled, The Ride of a Lifetime: Lessons Learned From 15 Years as CEO of the Walt Disney Company that Star Wars creator George Lucas was not happy with Star Wars: The Force Awakens or the direction the house of the mouse took his creation.

According to the book, Disney purchased outlines for three new movies Lucas had created when it made a deal to acquire Lucasfilm in 2012. While not legally obligated to do so, Lucas became very unhappy to the extent of feeling betrayed when he discovered they were not going to use those for the next round of Star Wars movies.

Things got worse after Lucas was shown a private screening of The Force Awakens because in his words, it presented nothing new.

Quote

“There’s nothing new,” he said. In each of the films in the original trilogy, it was important to him to present new worlds, new stories, new characters, and new technologies. In this one, he said, ‘There weren’t enough visual or technical leaps forward.’ He wasn’t wrong, but he also wasn’t appreciating the pressure we were under to give ardent fans a film that felt quintessentially Star Wars.”

Wow, I can't believe how jaded he sounds.  It's not like the Prequels did anything original and new either.  I mean I love the guy and all he's done but let it go man, you made what you made and now it's someone else's turn to try.

Is it true that Disney can't really use the Original Trilogy characters that much, since George Lucas still has contractual rights over it and earns for its use in media?  This might  be the reason Disney went to the route of creating a  new set of characters to try and re-create the mythology without using too much of the OT characters.  If that being the case, can George still feel betrayed. You can't have your cake and eat it too, I guess

I understand what he means about the new trilogy not having a whole lot that can be considered "new" but at the same time he's coming across as having seller's remorse.

My thoughts exactly. He sold his baby, now he has to live with it.

Sure, he's free to dislike the direction The Mouse House is taking Star Wars, Lord knows I do, but he's the one who handed Mickey the keys. I gotta wonder, is it really betrayal he feels, . . . or guilt.
