Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker To Be The Last Star Wars Movie Until 2022

Disney is putting Star Wars on a bit of a hiatus when it comes to movies after this years release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which will conclude the nine-picture saga that began with the A New Hope back in 1977. The next batch of untitled Star Wars films won't begin until Dec. 16, 2022. That will be the first of a brand new trilogy of films with the second movie coming out in Dec. 12, 2024 and the third in Dec. 18, 2026.

In other words it looks like Disney's original plans for doing solo character films every other year seems to have died with the box office failure of Solo: A Star Wars Story, many of which contribute to an overvaluation of Star Wars in recent years.

Of course that doesn't mean Star Wars will completely absent in those non-movie years as we know Disney is planning a number of live-action and animated TV series with their Disney+ streaming service starting with Mandalorians later this year.

What lies ahead for the big screen is fairly unknown at this point. We know Last Jedi Director Rian Johnson is penning a script for a new trilogy as well as ame of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

Yep.  Slow it down.  I'd be better with an even longer hiatus to keep Star Wars special and so the movies feel like events again, but I think three years before starting a new trilogy or whatever is fine.

They thought they could just do the same thing they are doing with marvel but didnt considered that star wars is a more self contained story, its better that they think well of the stories instead of just trying to pump them out as fast as possible. I know there are a lot of new story lines they could create still im weary to think of one that is completely separate from the Skywalker line, we'll have to wait to see what they come up with.

I'm good with this, after Last Jedi, I lost interest in Star Wars movies. The whole one movie a year was too much and it was coming across as trying too hard; it was also affecting the sales of merchandise. I didn't see Solo in cinemas, I caught it on Netflix and I plan to do the same with the Episode 9.

I think this is great news, I love Star Wars and will likely watch almost everything they throw our way, but I am a bit fatigued from it. I love Han, Luke and Leia as much as anyone, but there's so much universe left unexplored that the fact that Star Wars always finds the stories circling around the core three has, IMO, gotten old. I think Rogue One worked because it found a way to tell a story, albeit related to the original trilogy,  without really depending on any of it's previous characters, and thus giving us a fresh new perspective.
