Spyglass Rebooting 'Hellraiser' With David S. Goyer Writing & Producing

Gary Barber, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Spyglass announced that Spyglass Media Group will reboot Clive Barker’s 1987 horror classic Hellraiser with David S. Goyer producing and writing.  Over three decades, the Hellraiser franchise has spawned ten films, graphic novels and merchandise.

Spyglass will finance and develop the project for worldwide theatrical distribution. Keith Levine will serve as a producer alongside Goyer, under the Phantom Four banner. Chris Stone, Vice President, Development & Production for Spyglass, will oversee the project.

Barber said, “Clive and I go back more than 30 years together. For generations, his brilliantly twisted and imaginative Hellraiser haunted the minds of moviegoers with its searing imagery of Pinhead.” He added, “David is the perfect storyteller to continue Clive’s vision for a new theatrical version of Hellraiser.”

Goyer said, “I’ve been a fan of Clive’s work since the original Books of Blood paperbacks and The Hellbound Heart novella. Having the chance to reimagine Pinhead and the Cenobites for a new audience is a nightmare-come-true.  Gary is a true fan as well and we’re committed to making something dark and visceral.”

Goyer is known for co-writing Christopher Nolan’s Batman franchise (Batman Begins, Dark Knight, Dark Knight Rises); wrote Marvel’s Blade trilogy for New Line and co-wrote the upcoming Skydance/Paramount/Fox production Terminator: Dark Fate.

Well, they've tried a couple times already and failed miserably.  Goyer has a couple of actor friends who would definitely do a better job than the direct to DVD rejects.  Not sure how close they would come to Doug Bradley's level.  Not sure how I feel about this whole thing.  I love the first four movies to varying degrees.  The rest are utter garbage.

I completely agree, the first 4 made sense, the rest was just torture porn with no script

The original is a masterpiece, Hellbound: Hellraisher 2 was a good sequel, everything that came after, especially the later sequels were really lacking. 

I do hope this new reboot will at least take the best parts from the novel and give it a respectable treatment.

Deadline has updated that Spyglass has tapped Night House director David Bruckner to helm the reboot Clive Barker’s 1987 horror classic Hellraiser.  Bruckner will work from a script by Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski.

We reported back in May that Gary Barber, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Spyglass announced that Spyglass Media Group will reboot the franchise with David S. Goyer producing and writing.  Spyglass will finance and develop the project for worldwide theatrical distribution. Keith Levine will serve as a producer alongside Goyer, under the Phantom Four banner. Chris Stone, Vice President, Development & Production for Spyglass, will oversee the project.

Bruckner helmed Night House which made its world premiere at Sundance earlier this year and was sold to Searchlight for $12M.

I hope Clive Barker isn't involved in some way.  He wrote the book(s), directed the original movie, co-wrote and produced the second movie, produced the third and fourth movies, literally invented this mythos, so keep him away from it.  Just ask Blumhouse: the best way to reboot a franchise is to not involve the creator at all.  Just imagine how bad the latest Halloween movie would have been if they had worked with John Carpenter in any way or if he'd even had direct involvement in the movie like doing the score or something.
