2018 SDCC Hasbro Star Wars Interview - What Would The Ultimate Death Star Playset Look Like

Recommended Posts

We talked with Steven Evans from Hasbro's Star Wars design team about Haslab, the Jabba's Sail Barge, Vintage Collection and what the ultimate Death Star playset would look like.

Let us know in the comment section below, would you be interested in seeing a Death Star playset done for Haslab and what is the maximum you would be willing to spend on such a thing?

While I would have loved to have some kind of modular Death Star 'display set'; at this point, it's probably out of my range, price and space-wise. That being said, hypothetically, I'd like a few major scenes recreated, no over-sized projectile launchers or action levers, basically, just dio backdrops.

tractor beam console

detention block/trash compactor - I still use my POTF version,  actually; it even doubles as a Mustafar center hallway ;)

DS2 Duel w/ Emperor's throne

Death Star cannon

control room? (blk & red walls)

misc hallway/door (Obi-Wan duel/ blast door), Death Squad 'control center'

They've done a number of these, piecemeal (25th  Ann 2 pks, FX figs, etc...), if only they were upgraded & combined.

I think it’s going to be one hell of an incredible task to try to pin down creating such a playset / display piece. Even if it adheres to the 3 3/4 scale. It would be interesting if they could do two halves of the sphere, splitting the Death Star in half, right down the middle — or maybe in quarters — each a little larger than the sail barge, and each containing sections that, as @Bespin refugee discussed above, mirror specific sequences from the movie. That way, if you just wanted the throne room, you could just buy that one of the four segments, or something. I’m sure it could be done. But, I dunno if I have the architectural brain to do it.

The TLJ BB-8 playset (see below) idea could be neat, but, once you fill it w figs, you're basically out of space

Unfortunately, I think anything is  going to be either under-scaled, or overpriced.

Ideally, I'd sell it as a BAF type of thing, figures w/ pack-in components (see 2002 figs/Deluxe, Star Trek build a bridge, etc...) Battle packs, modular playsets, but, then you run the risk of sell-outs vs pegwarmers.

Honestly. I think I''d rather have a Cloud City; Carbon Freeze, window, gantry, battle area. done.

@Bespin refugee A BAF approach would actually be a great idea. Diamond Select has also been doing that with their Ghostbusters line, as well. First, building the rooftop from the finale of the first movie, then the firehouse. Granted, the firehouse is really only a backdrop facade, but being able to gather up the pieces of a Death Star or other such playset, would be a cool incentive. And Hasbro’s already kind of in the game anyway, with the BAF component to Marvel Legends. I’d like to hope they would consider that approach.
