THR reports that Billy Dee Williams will be reprising his role as Lando Calrissian in the upcoming untitled Episode IX movie. Production on the film which will be directed by J.J Abrams is expected to begin production later this summer. The film opens Dec. 20, 2019.

I wish they would have brought Billy Dee back earlier, now it seems they are turning to the last living character from the original series.

Holy cow, man... I can’t even begin to overstate how STOKED I am for this! And, it was something that I was actually really hopeful we would see — especially considering the unfortunate passing of Carrie Fisher. It had occurred to me that they’d really need someone with some equal significance, as far as holdovers from the classic trilogy goes. And who better than Billy Dee as Lando, right now? Especially since he’s pretty much the only one left. But, I really hope that they go against type — and fan speculation — and do not actually kill him off. Not that I’m not all for the new cast and such, but you need SOMEBODY to be their leader. And no more charismatic, experienced a leader could you find, as Lando, at this point.

Not having Lando, or even the mention of his name in TLJ was a huge missed opportunity.  Glad he'll be back for Ep IX.

I thought he should’ve been there to reply to the distress signal they sent out in TLJ. Either way I’m glad to have him officially back!

I kinda agree, I thought for sure he was going to be the code breaker Finn was looking for on the casino planet, but my guess is they already had larger plans in store for Lando with this next movie. I am not surprised at all he will be in Episode IX and my guess that was the plan all along.

DJ could have been removed completely if Lando was the dude Maz knew. But then Lando betraying the Resistance would ruin Lando. Hopefully they don't ruin Lando like they did for Han and Luke.

Welcome news, indeed. There's no way the ST could conclude without him, IMO. Hard to believe we haven't even had a mention of Lando in Eps 7 & 8, considering how integral he was in the fall of the Empire.

I loved everything Mark brought to TLJ... Here’s hoping we get to see him continue building off of it, in IX.
