Mold Removal from Collectables

Recommended Posts

I am finally pulling the trigger and having the the mold removed from ceiling and rug in my basement. Unfortunately my basement also houses my toy collection. It will be a herculean effort just to moving everything. To make things even worse I have been told that since black mold consists of spores I will need to clean each individual item. I asked the company that I am contracting with what they would use to do this and was told "to try to hepa-vac your contents to remove as much mold as possible prior to moving them. You should make sure that you use a respirator. Most of your contents are porous and so they are difficult to clean. You can try using Tide for any textiles and Dawn Dish Soap for other items. We would suggest a 50%bleach/50%water mixture for any items that are bleach safe but this would probably not be good for collectibles."

I can't imagine that bleach would work with Fabric collectibles without staining them. Also I am not sure if hepa-vac 3 inch figures or statues is the best way to clean them.

I was curious if anyone else has had to go through this and what they had used to clean, or decontaminate, plastic, fabric and cardboard.

Any suggestions would be most welcomed.
