Power Rangers movie reboot character descriptions released

I went into reading this with my scrutiny meter on high alert. I'm not sold on the idea of making MMPR into the next big movie franchise.

That said, I can't say this sounds too awful.

(Kimberly's return to school after a six month absence? Yeah....I know it screams "teen pregnancy".....but we'll see).

Obviously they're gonna try and "angst-up" the thing to catch that CW crowd, but all things considered, I'm not to worried (notice I said "not TO worried"). If these descriptions are any indication, all they're doing is adding a little detail to the broad strokes that were already there.

I mean, let's face it. This isn't Transformers or G.I. Joe, where Hasbro basically let the movie studios completely over-hall what was basically a couple of stalled out franchises because they were desperate for a major breadwinner. Power Rangers has been Saban/Bandai's big meal-ticket for the last 22 years and they're not gonna let anybody mess THAT up.

Don't they pretty much just reboot the series every time a new series comes out? Why not do that but in movie form?

Technically, a reboot entails starting over from scratch. Power Rangers doesn't do that. Each new evolution is just a new entry in the overall series. That's why you can occasionally see older Rangers return to the show.

It looks as though they're trying to add a little twist to each character to somehow say, "my life isn't perfect". And that may not be just to attract the "CW crowd". The original show did that too, to some degree (the one example that pops readily to mind is Kimberly's divorced parents) to show the little kids that life can throw you some curve balls but we move on. If that's what they're trying for in this new movie then more power too them.

I guess I won't have any huge problem with this reboot as long as they don't try to over-sex and ratchet up the adult themes a-la that Power/Rangers youtube move. But, you know.....Hollywood.....

Was Transformers stalled? The development of the movie occurred just as the Unicron Trilogy was ongoing, which was pretty popular with kids and a successful series of toylines for Hasbro. I don't think the birth of the movie franchise was due to the TF property being stagnant, or anything like that. Hasbro just wanted a cash cow.
