Sony And Marvel Collaborating!

Please don't make Spiderman an Avenger. We need about 3 solo Spiderman movies where he is broke, socially outcast, and beat-up before he is high profile enough to be an Avenger.

The same applies to Daredevil, and presumably the other heroes appearing in the Defenders series.

Licencing agreement says Spider-Man must remain white and straight.

https://www.yahoo.com/movies/s/spider-man-needs-white-straight-says-leaked-sony-221716861.html

Say what??? They're keeping an A-list superhero true to his original incarnation and not bowing to the current social/political climate??? Let the outrage begin!

I did notice their addendum, however, about how they can't do that unless he's portrayed that way in a Marvel comic first. Translation: "Wait until next year's senses-shattering, multi-part, 'EVENT' in which a thousand universes collide and we rehash all the past stories that are better than what our current talent can produce and ret-con everything to wipe out the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and all straight, white, Christian male characters from our current roster."

(Oh wait, that's Secret Wars).

Actually, this is a pretty interesting read. I can't believe they need to lay out things that should be obvious (Perter Parker doesn't smoke, abuse alcohol, or have underage sex) but I guess with the world we live in now, you kinda have to. All of the above are the go-to attention-getters for the lazy, modern day Hollywood creative team. I think they could have made it easier on themselves though. Instead of going through a list of all of the character traits Peter should have, they could have just simply said, "Read a reprint of Amazing Fantasy #15". Make it easy on themselves.

Most of the commenters seem to be cool and logical about this...might be a first? Everyone knows the real Spider-man, and to a greater extent, the character of Peter Parker. Just another case of media sensationalism.

Actually, it says Peter Parker must remain white & straight. Only if he's Spider-Man do those qualifications apply to Spider-Man.

Of course Spider-Man isn't going to be a sexual deviant, they put him in kids cartoons! Could you imagine what that would do to the Marvel Superheroes franchise?

Nah. Not when you can pander to a certain demographic for attention and profit. And it's already begun:

https://www.yahoo.com/news/reason-spider-man-always-white-straight-contract-174542716.html

"but as Peter Parker has been the man behind the mask for the past decade of films, they’re one in the same. And for the past five films, with the Columbia Pictures trilogy and Sony’s two films, audiences have seen practically the same character."

Ummm...yeah, it's the same character all right. His name is Spider-Man. And I'm pretty sure every single person who laid down money for a ticket to all 5 of his blockbuster movies, white, black, gay, or straight, knew which character they were going to see. Heck, I bet a lot of people enjoyed those movies regardless of his crime of being created white and straight.

(Hey guys, did you know that every time you see a James Bond movie or read a Harry Potter book, that the hero is basically the same character every time? Was that one of the dumbest statements ever written???)

"This revelation could do some good in when it comes to making the next casting decision, as the studio has now been called out for its biases. "

Depicting the character as he was created 50 years ago and has been depicted ever since is now "bias"!!!

Keep beating that drum, liberal media.

A lesser man might also point out that being angry because the studio is casting a white guy would also be, by definition, racial discrimination, or as we call it out here in the sticks . . . racism. @nono@

Sigh . . . Remember when the biggest controversy over casting a comic book movie was that Michael Keaton was funny?

I do not. Partly because there was no internet for people to come together and b@#$%. Partly because I was too young to question any kind of casting move. I just showed up to the theater and enjoyed the show. Crazy notion, I know!

I was in my mid teens in 89 and in full on comicbook nerd mode, the nerd rage over Keaton was a huge thing. Everyone just kept with the Mr Mom as Batman. I has seen some of Keaton other films, so I knew he could do dramatic . I just wasn't sure about how Burton was going to work out..

I miss the whole Batman 89' mania....I was stationed in West Germany at the time.

By the time I came home, it was a distance memory...

Someone named Tom Holland is the new Spider-Man.

The only thing that matters to some people is that he's white and they can't wait to play the race card. http://www.forbes.com/sites/dorothypomerantz/2015/06/23/we-have-our-new-spider-man-yawn-sony-and-marvel-are-missing-a-great-opportunity/?utm_campaign=yahootix&partner=yahootix

This author seems to think that white Spider-Man automatically equals boring Spider-Man. Suggesting that we'll get tired of spending our money to see movies about him (unless of course, they change his race?) I wonder how whittie James Bond ever eeked out 20-some movies...An interesting character premise and exciting stories? Naaaaahhhh.....that couldn't be.

She also points out Marvel's move in making comic book Spidey black. Well...it definitely is a new character in the Spidey costume (not Peter Parker) who's black. Not sure if she's aware of that, or if it matters to her. Regardless, you can be rest assured that Peter Parker will return to the Spider-Man roll in the comics too. I'm betting it happens......ohhhhhh......probably around the time the movie comes out? Just a wild guess.

Someone named Tom Holland is the new Spider-Man.

Yeah, he's supposed to have extensive dance training. Doesn't sound that impressive unless you catch these videos of the guy executing some fairly impressive gymnastic moves.

With less than a year to go before his debut in Civil War, and less than two till the next Spidey film is set to be released, I guess they decided to take a shortcut and actually hire somebody with athletic ability.

There's a revolutionary concept for you.

As for the race thing, I'm tired of walking that dog.

Athletic ability? It's not like they arent going to turn him into a gumby cartoon character to match 85% of the movie.

Well I hope he's wearing the Venom costume in his debut in Cap 3

That would be cool and different. If I had to guess, I'd say they won't stray too far from the classic look...if at all. I was pretty happy with the Tobey costume and the ASM2 costume. Heck, even the first ASM look grew on me a little.

I really wonder how they'll handle his girlfriend situation. Gwen or MJ??? Which one would you all want to see???

Yeesh the new Spider-Man looks even less manly than Andrew Garfeild. I didn't think that would be possible.

Well, Spidey is only supposed to be around 15-16 in these movies, so I'm guessing they weren't looking for ripped Hemsworth clones.

Yeah that's true. I really hate that interpretation of Spider-Man. I prefer the older Spider-Man from later issues and the 90s animated series. Obviously general audiences agreed with me since the Maguire movies had better box office results than the "amazing" movies.

This could actually make sense. One of the things that always bugged me about the Spider-Man comics was Aunt May being this withered, frail older woman in poor health when Peter was around 15 or 16, now over a decade later (in comic book time) she looks healthier than ever. Skewing Aunt May younger for the movies does away with that little paradox.

Plus, you know, its Marissa Tomei. Not to hard on the eyes.

Completely Agree with the frail old Aunt May depiction always bothered me, Tomeii is a good choice loved her in The Wrestler, that scene with Round and Round playing in the jukebox was gold.
