Okay, it sounds a little goofball, but it may not be as bad as it sounds. After all, an axe-wielding maniac isn't a bad place to start your superhero series bad-guy wise.

I don't agree with any of the casting so far. Virginia Gardener should have been cast as Supergirl. Olsen should have been cast as a Asian person, man or woman, if they were going to change the race. 2 strikes CBS.

Changing the race of well-known yet minor characters is such a standard procedure it borders on cliché. Not even gonna bother rehashing the old "shock value" and "PC" condemnations, it's all been said.

 

Now, a new wrinkle could be Supergirl's status as a female lead prime-time TV series, a status that carries it's own prerequisite archetypes. In that case Jimmy will probably fill the "funny black friend" position. Also be on the look out for the "gay" friend, the "tough-talking black chick" friend, the "funny fat man" friend, the unshaven, yet otherwise totally white-bread, love-interest in a position of authority (resident advisor, boss, cop, etc.), the nerdy chick, and the vapid popular girl.

You forgot about the character that is going to sit behind the computer and tell the hero what to do and where to go via blue tooth and get any piece of information possible in less than a second. There is no way for any superhero to be effective without that.

If this were a show about a white young adult male lead, there would be the stereotypical hot hipster Asian female love interest for the male hero as a means to make the main female love interest, who is in a relationship with another character that the lead hero is jealous of, jealous. Not sure if Arrow has done it, but MTV Spider-Man did it, Friends (I know it's not a superhero show) did it, and now the Flash series is doing it.

The media should love this this one. I'm already seeing the phrase "Female empowered" everywhere in relation to this show so fabricated stories about little girls being turned off to superheroes should greatly diminish. That plus the superhero connection (read: built in audience) it's no wonder this one went straight to series.

 

That's not saying against the show itself, it just is what it is.
