I'm not a GOTG expert by any means. But the ONE GOTG trade paperback I own DOES, in fact, portray them as a rag-tag group of misfits (it's even a pre-Bendis book).

ZOMG Comedy in a Marvel movie based on a book that was...pretty damn funny in parts.

Clearly everyone needs to growl like they have throat cancer and brood about dead parents and loved ones to have a REAL comic book movie.

Anyway, looks entertaining, and it's just the first trailer. Relax folks, I'm sure trailer #2 will show plenty of laser blasts and 'splosions and growly yelly ZOMG THIS IS SRS BIZNESS (but funny too) stuff.

 

Also, if you look around a bit online you find out exactly why "Star Lord" acts the way he does.

Guardians of the Galaxy is being played like an over-produced SNL skit, Michael B. Jordan is the Human Torch, Megan Fox is April O'Neill, and Lex Luthor looks like Napolean Dynamite. You'd think after reinvigorating the stagnant action movie genre, earning billions of dollars, launching, restoring, and saving careers the comic book movie would've earned at least half the respect shown a Jack Black Slacker Comedy or a low-rent Torture Porn, but no. They're still treated like kiddie films at best and bad jokes at worst.

 

This is everything I feared when Disney took over.

 

You realize Disney has nothing whatsoever to do with the new Fantastic Four movie, TMNT, or the upcoming Man of Steel sequel right?

 

Wait, apparently not.

 

Also: Have you actually read the relatively recent Guardians of the Galaxy stuff?

They can never be satisfied, because Disney/Marvel Studios had the TEMERITY to not consult them on every single script and casting decision every step of the way to make sure that everything was totally and completely accurate down to the last detail to the source material and any and all hints of humor, comedy, or anything that doesn't involve the most solemn and severe seriousness is carefully excised because everyone knows comic books aren't supposed to have any attempts at fun in them outside whiz-bang explosions and action (and maybe a little of the sexy...you know, with all those superhero girls that have the mutant ability to contort their bodies so they can show off their boobs and butt at the same time).

Butttt I lub Ragtag Groups of Misfits from Monty Python's Flying Circus to Fat Albert & the Junkyard Gang even to today's Regular Show Lineup....if it wasn't for a bunch of Ragtag misfits this country wouldn't be here today, or even-more-so Palpatine's Empire would be alive today & I'd be bored watching Luke actually make it to Toshi Station to pick up Power Converters & we woulda had a whole different movie on our hands....Marvel's Bread & Nutella is built on Ragtag Misfits.....my junior high school days are filled w/Ragtag....even the guys from the Delta House & Tri-Lambs would agree....Hell even "Robot House" too....Murricah loves Misfits Ragtag, Mixed, Assorted, Motley, Patchworked, Piebald, Sundry & Hybrids.....its a movie I would plunk down hard earned borrowed money for....I'm there dudes I will give them my money if only to see a large Raccoon unleash hellfire while riding on the back of a Giant tree....lone wolf movies are fairly boring.....after Chuck Noland lost Willlllsaahhhn (Wilson) to the ravages of the mildly angry sea, he lost my total attention that last hour of his journey.....Even Superman had Super-Dog.....& Batman his Bat-Do*ahem* Robin....Crom Bless Muricah & it's Ragtag Misfits everywhere in real life, print & video or digital format.....@usa@ @luke@ @bumblebee@ @homer@ @gambit@ #party# @luigi@ @optimus@ @Spidey@ ......Spiderman isn't a lone wolf either he gets help from various amazing friends & aunt may soo there

I laughed!! I think this movie might do well!! As long as the action is solid, the story line is written well, it'll be a hit for Marvel!!! Maybe more second tier teams can get a shot?? Alpha Flight, WCA, etc!!

Oh and way to go with "who the hell is starlord jokes" that really pushes the credibility of the character. Its all you need now a days though. Iron man 3 is the best example how successfull a really bad movie can be.

This kind of thing has happened in other comic movies...as if the screenwriters are so embarrassed by the geekiness of the names AND feel the audience shares that for some reason. They already bought the tickets, folks! Say the names, say em proud!

The movie itself looks good so far.. but the comedy just seems out of place and cheesy.

The "Who the hell is Star-Lord?" jokes are making light of the fact that this is an extremely obscure character to begin with. Captain America or Iron Man this ain't. The only people that are going to feel the "credibility" of the character is damaged by these jokes are super anal-retentive fanboys. Which is funny, because so many of the people complaining, apparently aren't even familiar enough with the character in the first place to understand that he DOESN'T start as some intergalactic super-badass that everyone's in awe and fear of.

 

And Iron Man 3 is FAR from a "really bad movie." Go watch Steel or Catwoman and get back to us on "really bad movies." Just because it had a plot twist you didn't like doesn't make a movie bad. It just makes it a movie you didn't like, which is fine. Not everybody likes everything.

He's called Star Lord twice in the two-minute trailer which is already twice as many times as Superman was called Superman in the entire Man of Steel movie. Maybe you're forgetting that this is a Marvel movie? Marvel hasn't been bashful at all about the superheroic code-names, and I highly doubt they're starting here. As noted above, the point is to poke a bit of fun at the fact that this is a character audiences aren't already familiar with. I can see why the joke went over some heads, but it's not designed to be genuinely denigrating to the character.

i agree. i think it might do pretty well too. especially since it's a far less familiar source than say superman/batman/spiderman/etc. i think the there will only be a handfull of crazy fanboys who will get bent out of shape due to canon issues. the majority who are either unfamiliar with it or slightly familiar with it, will probably just enjoy it for what it is, not what they "expect" it to be.

 

i laughed. yeah the jokes are a little cheesey, but harmless. i think there will be plenty of serious action in the film to give it a nice balance.

I'll go see it, at the moment this is the Marvel movie I have expected the least from. On a side note I showed the preview to my 11 year old stepson and he didn't if sit through the whole thing. If Marvel is aiming it at a younger demographic I think they're screwed. I do find it funny that Marvel must know it's an uphill battle for them since they have to put the "From the studio that brought you..." line on the poster.

I'm this close to ordering Rocket, Gamora, and Nova before my free trial for Amazon Prime is up in a couple of days.

 

I think I'm going to want that Groot and I know those three will be the tougher ones to find at retail (my Spider-toy-sense tells me so).

Somehow, I don't think we'll encounter the problems with these flying off shelves that we had with certain characters from the Cap or Spidey lines. That being said, Gamora could be a problem. She is a female character, plus for some reason, sci-fi geeks are all about the green chicks.

 

I don't know if this helps but everyone except Iron Man and Star Lord are one to a case. I only preordered Nova been wanting that version for a good long while, I'll hold out on the others for now maybe we get the comic outfits as an SDCC exclusive including that comic Star Lord that was shown last year.

Everyone's going to want that comic Nova. It will go Nova, Gamora/Rocket (tie), Drax, Starlord and a distant, distant last place for Iron Man. There. I predicted the desirability of the whole wave months before its release

I've always been vaguely aware of the Guardians of the Galaxy comics, but I've never read any of them. I do have the first issue of the recent reboot, but I don't know if I've even read the whole thing. So I guess perhaps I don't have any preconceived notions of what I'd want to see in this movie. As a casual comic-book-movie-lover/comic-book-fan though, I'd have to say I'm intrigued by this movie and/or subsequent figures and what-not. It's just unusual enough to be wildly interesting and different to me...it doesn't seem to be your typical, formulaic comic-book movie, which I find refreshing and potentially entertaining. It makes me think of Firefly-meets-X-Men or something, and I think I'll like it. And even though I've always found Rocket Raccoon as a character incredibly ridiculous over the years, there's something surprisingly cool about seeing a vicious woodland creature in space wielding a high-tech machine gun while snarling and spraying bullets all over a space-prison. (lol)

If the first issue you have is the Bendis Guardians then I don't blame you for not finishing it. I actually think this movie has something for everyone comic book fans will be glad to have this team adapted onscreen, kids will love Rocket Raccoon, Doctor Who geeks are gonna love Karen Gillian as Nebula, Sci Fi fans will like all the aliens and space stuff and having basically a sort of Star Wars movie with 100% less lightsabers no but in all seriousness the movie looks fun and I applaud Marvel for taking the risk. I can't wait to see Ronan in action and what they do with Thanos.
