Why collecting toys is like a heroin addiction

Rob Bricken

I moved a couple weeks ago, and as a toy collector, I had the unenviable task of packing up all my toys and statues and things (everything involving moving is unenviable, but whatever). This was actually not that difficult, because 90% of my toys were already in boxes. These boxes had only ever been opened up to put more toys in them, so all I had to do was tape them up and put them on the moving truck. Other than a few assorted items on my desk - no more than a dozen - I haven't displayed an action figure or a collectible in over two and a half years, and yet I regularly spend over a thousand dollars a year on action toys… toys that go directly into these boxes. My question is this: What the f--- am I doing?

I think he was stuck on auto cruise control. He was pre programmed to buy the figures but had lost the zeal to enjoy each one be it displaying or just opening the box. Just going through the motions is not enough. The day I cant appreciate or enjoy my collection is the day I pull the plug, and move to something else. I'm so deep in now I don't see that happening but you never know what's around the corner.

Many 'collectors' hate me because I am the opposite of this.  I open everything.  I did this back in the day with GI Joe and Marvel, and now I do it with Hot Wheels and other diecast.  I see the cries of the MIB people every time I post the fallout of a good cracking session.  The way I look at it, I don't collect cardboard.  I collect the toys.  I want them free of their plastic prisons.  I want to see the colors, the details, the articulation and movement the way they were meant to be seen.  Up close and out of the package.  I want to pose my action figures in action poses.  I want to race my race cars down a track.

I open everything, and now I own over 1000 loose action figures and roughly 3000 loose diecast vehicles.  As someone that recently had to move to a new house, let me tell you, that was not an easy move.  It was the opposite of the OP comment.  Everything had to be put up securely, and it had to be properly wrapped so as not to damage anything.  I am still in the process of unpacking everything 4 1/2 months later.  But, to me at least, it's totally worth every minute of it.  Setting everything back up is where I get my high from.  That is the addictive part to me.  Not a bunch of boxes.  But to each their own.  There are a lot worse things that one could be addicted to.

As a recovering drug addict and alcoholic, I would say that yes, you do sound like you have a problem and if it is really affecting your mind and your life that much then you should probably do what a drug addict or alcoholic would do; get rid of your 'drugs' and completely  abstain from ever buying them in the future.
