DC Club Infinite Earths Subscription 2013

Mattel posted the following on their Facebook page:

Just flew in from SDCC (yeah yeah, boy are my arms tired…) and we are revved up for an amazing 2013 with 3 fantastic subscriptions for MOTUC (Club Eternia), DCU (Club Infinite Earth) and our all-new line of 6” figures, comic book-styled WATCHMEN in our Club Black Freighter line! How awesome is that?!

We have had a few changes from past years, the most noticeable is a price increase on basic figures (i.e., MOTUC going from $20 to $25).To quell any rumors, I can confirm we are not overloading our pockets here. This price increase is 100% due to the skyrocketing cost of producing these figures over the last few years. Every 6” figure is handmade and hand assembled. And honestly, we just can’t keep 2008 pricing anymore in 2013. Labor, raw material and shipping has all gone way up. We REALLY don’t want to cost-reduce figures by removing deco and/or accessories. To maintain the same high quality and value in our figures in today’s economy, prices do need to go up. And there is another change…

Much like with our partner site Hotwheelscollector.com, in 2013 we are going to be switching much more to a subscription only model. Some figures will still have EXTREMELY limited “day-of” stock (meaning our regular sales to the general public on the 15th of each month), but many figures for all the clubs will have none at all. This means the ONLY way to know for sure you’ll be able to complete your collection for all lines now is to subscribe for the full year.

Why do we need to do this? Basically, it is economics. High-end, fully detailed, highly articulated figures take a lot or resources to produce. In the “new economy” we are faced with many production challenges and the solution available to us (for the most part) is to only produce high end collector figures if we have locked in guaranteed sales (that is the whole point of the sub). In 2013, we are really in a position where we can no longer put out collector figures day-of and just hope that fans will buy them.

So what does this mean? Honestly, buy a sub. Seriously. If you are a fan of MOTUC, DCU 6” or WATCHMEN, it is decision time. Quantities of day-of stock will be (and I mean this in the nicest way) ridiculously low or non-existent. Many figures for all lines will not be offered day-of at all.

While we would love it if our collector lines could work for every collector’s particular buying habits (i.e., some collectors only buy teams or females or vintage figs, etc.) or every individual economic situation. But at the end of the day, under the new economy in today’s world, in 2013 we just can’t do that.

If you are a fan of our lines, the sub is now your way to make sure you get your figures. If you are counting on day-of sales, you very well may be out of luck. We know this won’t work for every customer, but it is the reality of where we are today.

Now we are going to do everything we can to plus-up the subs as much as possible. In addition to sub-only figs like Mallah and King He-Man and being able to vote on the Fan’s Choice figure for 2013, MOTUC sub holders will also get items like the Subternia Map, the Origin of Skeletor mini comic, and all sub holders will get sneak peeks at upcoming figures well ahead of the general public (like we did for Mekaneck and Uncle Sam recently). We will redouble our efforts to ensure you have the info first! Sub holders deserve that.

We’re also adding Early Access in 2013, which gives all subscription holders the chance to buy NON-SUBSCRIPTION items from any brand approximately 2 to 3 business days (depending on the sale date) before they’re available to the general public!

So, for example, when a product that isn’t part of a subscription goes on sale (like Granymyr or the PKE Meter), all subscribers will get the first chance to buy product through Early Access. If it sells out during the Early Access period, that’s it – there won’t be any product for non-subscription holders to buy.

Once Early Access opens, it will stay open for until the product sells out or the monthly sale begins, whichever comes first (again, approximately 2 to 3 business days). For the most part, purchase limits will be set to the normal limit of 10 (any changes will be noted on the product page). We’re still working on getting Early Access products to ship with subscription products and will post as soon as we have an answer. Right now it is just early access to buy but we hope to also let you combine Early Access with sub shipments. Update on this as soon as we confirm it will work. All subscribers will get a reminder email before Early Access opens and we’ll also post reminders in our Forums and on Facebook and Twitter.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Early Access will NOT allow you to buy SUBSCRIPTION items from other brands early. If you have a Watchmen subscription, you can’t buy Club Eternia subscription products early – but you CAN buy MOTUC Classics products that aren’t part of Club Eternia, like Granymyr. Again, Early Access lets subscribers have the first chance at purchasing products that aren’t available in one of the subscriptions. If you want subscription products, you need to buy a sub or take the chance that it may not be available day-of.

For our international customers, we’ve done our best to hold our shipping rates at 2008 levels, but the truth is we’ve been losing a ton of money on shipping and are now forced to raise International Postal (non-trackable) rates by $5 just to cover our costs. To help this, though, we’re offering a new, lower cost option for international customers for 2013: UPS International will be replaced with DHL, which provides a better service, including signature delivery and 2 to 3 day delivery times in most regions, at a substantially lower price than UPS International. We will still offer International Post as an option if you really want it but “lost” or “not received” shipments will not be replaced or refunded.

And to address the big elephant in the room: we know the buying experience has not been perfect. In the past few months we have made great strides to improve this with initiatives such as our new US-based Customer Service team and a soon to be launched revamped “My Subscription” page letting customers control things like their shipping address and payment options. We are 100% committed to continuing to improve the buying and shipping process until it is perfect. You have my word on that.

So if you are on the fence as to whether or not to get a sub, remember, day-of may not be an option anymore. DAY-OF STOCK WILL BE EXTREMELY LIMITED and MANY FIGURES WILL NOT HAVE ANY DAY OF STOCK IN 2013. It may not work for everyone, but in today’s economy, without guaranteed presales, we just can’t move forward anymore with high end collector figs.

If anyone has questions, feel free to post on the Ask Matty forums on Mattycollector.com. We have some amazing figs planned for 2013. If you want a complete collection, now is the time to act and the 2013 subs are the only way to know for sure you’ll get all of next year’s club releases. There will also be no reissues of any 2013 fig (or 2012 figs for that matter!). And please remember Club Eternia and Club Infinite Earths products that are purchased day-of cost will be priced higher than when you get them through a subscription.

Subs are on sale now through Aug 6th. We won’t be doing any extensions so there are just 18 days to go! Don’t get left in the dark and find yourself with an incomplete collection, missing that figure you’ve been waiting for all these years (Ram Man, anyone?)!

Scott “Toy Guru” Neitlich

PS: While we are only metering DCU’s sub, all of the subs are technically on the chopping block now (including MOTUC). If we don’t receive the minimum number of orders, any figures already tooled may be released quarterly but the full year can potentially be canceled (much as we unfortunately had to do for Ghostbusters in 2012). So again, if these are toy lines you love, the best way to support them and guarantee your figures (and that the lines actually go forward) is to subscribe. Without the minimum number of subscribers, none of our lines will be able to move forward. If you are on the fence and we have a toy line you love, subscribe to see it continue! Your sub purchase is your vote for more toys. Simple as that.

I posted the following on Mattel in response to Scott, thoughts?

Cutting Cost:

Packaging - decrease it or sell the figures loose in bags. GI Joe Collectors Club does something similar. Or give customers the choice of loose or packaged. Lose the White Mailer.

Gimmicks - maps, stickers, weapons packs, weapons stands, figure stands, art books, oversized figures, etc...lose them, use the money on the figurs.

Amount of Figures - decrease the amount of figures sold on Matty from 12 to 8 or 6...Drop the retail lines. Moms in the "new economy" with mouths to feed arent going to buy an $18.00 figure. Collectors are the ones with money or the ones who'll find it, focus on them.

Customer Service and QC - Improve it (I know you're working on this). Mattel has developed a reputation for bad CS and QC. You can find it on every board on the the net. Drop Digital River. I know you wont but if you did there would be an audible, global hoorah!

Increasing Sales:

Character Selection - Bring out the big guns, figures of characters that fans would sell their mother or first born for. Nobody was asking for the Phantom Stranger, Vycron, Watchen, or Ghostbusters in suits. On the other hand, Huntress is on everybodys wish list.

Give us the Power - let us vote on ALL of the figures in the subscription. Give us 24, let us vote, the top 12 get it. Burger King is right, "make it our way." Have the figures laid out for the subscription at sign up time so we'll know what we are getting.

Sign up time - change it. Who has money in the middle of summer? Kids are home, food prices are up, gas is higher, airline prices are high, and vacations. Change it to tax time (Spring).

Summary:

Character Selection, Character Selection, Character Selection, Character Selection...its basic business, sell something people REALLY want and everything else falls into place.

Wow. I guess I never knew creation of the 6" action figure was so pain's-taking and costly. Would they have an easier time splitting the atom? This reads as "we can't afford to make a figure unless every single one sells! Every. Single. One. Seriously. It's rough out there, guys." OK, well, I'm still not buying a sub.

At least they're honest about it, I guess.

good stuff, particularly these ^

6 to 8 figures would be great, especially if we knew the line-up. Really, "new economy?" they use a term like that with countless excuses and still expect us to pony up $250 + a year?

you're right...nobody asked for courtroom Ghostbusters. I think i was thinking "Gozer", but i guess "courtroom Ray" just popped in there

I just find it interesting that there was no mentioning of this 8" Batman anywhere before and a friend of my surprisingly saw this in Hong Kong Toys R Us. Now it's online only in North America.

It was retailed for HKD$400 so that means US$50? I think Matty might be asking for $40-45 for the 8" Batman.

I mean, someone better go tell Hasbro about the perils of making a 6" figure in the "new economy". They have another 3 retail waves planned for Marvel Legends. They could be putting together a US Agent one minute and find themselves completely bankrupt the next!

How about that ML Klaw that is still hanging on the pegs at my Target? Mattel's going belly-up if they don't sell every single figure, the same must be trure for Hasbro. I don't want Klaw but I'd like to see ML wave 3. Guess I better do my part and go buy him...

Why stop there? Heck, there are plenty of companies that manufacture plastic goods that feature moveable parts. What about the tupperware industry? How will they survive the "new economy"? Well the answer is clear: Tupperware subs!!!!!

I tried to get 3 CIE's and 2 Watchmen subs ordered but I got a message saying Server Error...

They have a little less than 2 weeks to fix it or they will not get my business.

I won't do business over the phone with Digital River.

On the Matty Forums, I asked:

Are you guys prepared to say what will happen if the DCIE sub doesnt go through? Will the proposed figures be shuffled into the DC & Batman Unlimited lines? Will they still be sold on Matty as day of sale? Will they go away forever?

Also, while Im critical of choices you guys chose or had to make in regards to DCUC, I have enjoyed all the figures that have been put out in DCUC, MOTUC, Ghostbusters, and Voltron series.

Please try to find a way to get more DCUC figures out.

We are looking into a few contingency plans but most likely is the 6" sub does not sell through it will be shelved and only the retail line will continue. Fans are either on board or they are not. We know the sub does not work for every fan of every demographic and social/economic situation. But the sub is what we have to offer to keep 6" doing. If you are a fan of 6" Four Horsemen figures now if your chance to vote for more by buying a sub. If not, it may be time for this line to take a leave. But we hope that doesn't happen! That is why we revealed so much at SDCC. 5 months not just 3 like last year.

My gut tells me that this kind of stuff = scare tactics and that the sub will end up going through.

But what the heck does "investigate fully tooled figures" mean? Are they saying there's a possibility of cutting down articulation? I can imagine it now; 6" DC superhero figures, $25 each, 5 poilts of articulation a-la 1970's Kenner Star Wars!

It means new scuplts so they can create new characters that they cant make with current bucks.

Honestly, I don't really care much about the "100% newly tooled" figure for 2014.Don't get me wrong - I'm not against it by any stretch of the imagination. I just think that MATTEL has done a very good job with 3-4 basic body-types, both at retail and with the sub.

The high cost of new molds would simply be passed onto us if they did it regularly. As it is, I'm pretty content.

Is that how "number needed to investigate fully tooled figures for 2014" was defined by Matty at the panels? I never heard anything about a new "buck".

Meter as of 4/18

DCUIE_Fullsieimage2.jpg

No but thats what fully tooled means. They have to create new parts for new sculptures for new characters, thats why most of DCUC and MOTUC have the same bodies. It cost money to have an individual sculpt for individual characters. Toy companies have been using the same bodys for different characters for decades. It cost money to tool or sculpt individual characters.

No, they saved all their 5-point figures for their 3 3/4 lines...

I still dont see how you get "new figure bucks." Without any more information, this could just as easily translate to "no new figures in 2014." I mean, just headsculpts alone must be "tooled." "Fully" might mean entirely new characters that demand special works, but right now, Matty is being their usual vague selves...which is a great thing to be when youre trying to sell people on something, right?

Can't do the MOTUC sub, definitely not doing the DC one. This is such a sad end to what was once such a great toy line. Probably be a bunch of people canned over this at Mattel, but I can't imagine any new people doing much better.

Well it's the end because they woke up one day and said, "We need to have zero pegwarmers. We have to sell everything, because we'll make more money that way, so let's do subscriptions!" Then they try to sell us on the fact that , unless literally everything sells, they won't have enough money to make ANYTHING (regardless of the fact that every toy line ever for the last 30 years has had peg warmers at one time or another and have succeeded just fine). But that was during the "old" economy. This is the "new" economy. Or any other of the million excuses Mattel comes up with daily. Throw in some strong-arming, some scare tactics, and some threats about canceling whole lines, and here we are.

So long, Mattel.

i dont believe that these didnt sell at retail. maybe if they would have given us more well known characters in these waves. then again i dont know how they went in the states. as i said before if the sub would have really obscure characters then i would be in. saint walker, larfleeze, black mask, poison ivy would go well enough without the sub so why put them in it? even the metal men are hard to find and those really werent that huge of characters. so i can not believe that these wont sell at retail.

The toy company doesn't mind peg warmers as much at retail. That toy has been sold to the store. Now the store might not order more toys if they have to many peg warmers, but Matty or who ever has their money. With the online sales Matty is paying storage on everything until it sells.

I sat and stared at my computer for about 10 minutes trying to decide if i should buy 1 DC sub or 2. I did 2 along with the Voltron sub last year and I'm happy with what I've gotten so far but this year i got this weird feeling about it and decided to go with only 1. MOTU was dead to me a soon as they started selling fan creations and denying me RAM-Man(which they finally got us). I also got sick with the obscure characters which is something that i do love about DCU. Now after all the warnings from toy guru which I kinda take as threats I wish I hadn't bought the sub. It seems like every time he writes a post he's so condescending. I don't know I guess it's just not fun for me anymore. I have every DCU action figure ever made in boxes and all I can think about is getting rid of them(MOTU too).

I'm at the point where if the sub fails I'm okay with it.

There's just about no way I would subscribe to any of Mattel's line of action figures, especially given the high cost and disappointment that the DC Universe line has been lately. First of all, the characters would have to be something ive really wanted for a long time. While I liked classic DC comics, subscribing to a line that encompasses all of it isn't for me (and many others I'd presume). I feel like the subject would have to be more specific or targeted to guarantee my commitment to the line. Additionally, for me to subscribe, the line would have to have a track record of customer satisfaction, awesome figures, a reasonable price point, and the ability to opt out of figures (maybe there's a set number per year you can drop if you don't want them).

It sucks too because I would buy things like the Watchmen figures from my comic shop if they were available, but given the extravagant markup Mattel is charging for them these days, as well as the shipping and all the hassles I've read about over the years with them, I'm reluctant to commit to things I would love to own.

Speaking of things I'd love to own, if anyone really doesn't like that upcoming John Constantine figure, I'll buy him from you at cost or trade something of equal value. I know for many he's probably not that exciting of a character, but for me, he's been up there with Swamp Thing and The Phantom Stranger since I picked up the first wave of figures.
