You know? I really don't care. It's always been perplexing why homosexuality is the singled out group now a days. I live in the Bible belt and cannot, for the life of me figure out why the church causes such an uproar over anything gay related and leads campaigns that cost money, time and manpower to get legislative bans against gay marriage, but you have to beg to get people involved in issues of social justice, the poor, and sacrificing for suffering human beings. I can see this comic issue pop up on Fox News and other outlets, that everyone hating church (Westboro Baptist?) picketing DC, and pastors preaching sermons on the depravity of humanity and it saddens me deeply. Strictly from a religious point of view (coming from a pastor, husband to a pastor, son of a pastor and grandson of a pastor) God sees no difference between someone who's homosexual and someone who tells a white lie on occasion. We all sit on the sinking boat of sin. However, if we come out with a news cast saying that a popular DC character's going to reveal that he's a liar, an abuser, an adulterer, or getting a divorce (the only specific thing Jesus commented on marriage and said he was 100% against) there will be no new threads on the boards (or any that last), no comments on Fox News, no preachers preaching about the depravity of our culture. We just sit back and say, "That sucks, but it's life." Meanwhile, in my home state of NC, people celebrating the passage of Amendment One banning gay marriage ate wedding cake in a, "You can never get this. You can never get this" way (think Borat) while people, dear friends of mine, cry themselves to sleep and wonder why God hates them. My faith, my religion, and my God calls us to reach out to the outcast and the marginalized, the unloved and the unclean, not create more because we don't like the way they live or are afraid of it.

Original point restated: I'll reserve my judgement about this 'stunt' until I see it, but, honestly, does it really matter? Maybe if it looks like ruining a character we love just to say they're doing something different, but if it fits and gives the story and character more depth, is it really that horrible a thing?

Just because people focus on one sin over another does not discredit the other sin........hope that makes sense.........You say you are a pastor then you should know what the bible says clearly about it and there is no getting around it. Every sin should be offensive including this one. In this world people fight for beliefs and those who support marriage in the way God intends it should be valored in their efforts. I think you made a good point about how people judge one sin over another but at the same time those who believe in the values of God fight for them, of course I don't mean in the way of attacking and hurting but through education and effort. Yes many of them are hurting and it is up to us to share them love and compassion but also with an intent at rehabilitation (another idea that gets downplayed but is a reality) to edify each other. Jesus preached on this type of hyprocisy that you mentioned and it should be noted along with the idea that believers do find something wrong with that particular lifestyle.

I respect your views, but the Bible also clearly states that we can have slaves from other countries, it's an 'abomination' (same Hebrew word associated with homosexuality) to eat shellfish, and we should kill rape victims. However, I see no one preaching on how we should picket Red Lobster. My honest words of wisdom to anyone interested in or a part of the Christian faith is that the Bible 'clearly states' very few things, such as that God is love, we are called to forgive and not judge, and that salvation for ALL PEOPLES comes through Christ. Homosexuality is not mentioned often in the Bible and never by Christ. Plus, homosexuality during the writing of the Bible was never understood as a loving relationship between a man/man or a woman/woman, but as the rich and powerful who owned boy slaves for sexual purposes. The question I ask myself all the time is why are there certain things in scripture 'we' bypass and others 'we' deem important.

I have come a long way in my views on homosexuality, from completely against it, to focusing on loving the 'sinner', to recognizing that my own sin prevents me from truly judging what sin is. That's God's work and the work of the Holy Spirit. And I came to this point of view, not by the liberal media or a gay agenda, but from reading the scriptures, understanding their histories, and realizing how powerful Christ's love truly is.

But let me take a step back, because, at the end of the day, we are on a toy message board discussing comic books and this conversation, though somewhat relatable, is not the purpose of this board. The real question is why should something like homosexuality be devoid of our comic books or why can't an a lister turn out to be gay? Everyone's agendas and money making schemes aside, comics reach to a secular and religious world with varying beliefs and cultures. Where one can argue that they read comics for escapism and don't want to deal with issues such as homosexuality, a member of the LGBT community could find a strong gay or lesbian character in comics a way for them to have escapism from the persecutions of society they experience. Why should we neglect people of that?

I love when people refer to bible without any idea what they are talking about. The word for abomination is carried through many of the "do not do..." commandments, which include all of the sexual prohibitions. There is no where in the Torah that it says to kill rape victims, otherwise Dinah would've been killed. And yes, people do boycott Red Lobster- or when was the last time you saw an orthodox jew eating there? The bible also clearly prohibits men sleeping with other men as they would a woman... this has nothing to do with pedophelia, which is also forbidden.

That being said, the only comics that appeal to me are ones that have action and adventure and its probably why i only buy old back issues now. If I want to read about relationships gay or straight there are plenty of other places for that other than comics. Comics have always been for children and i think its real sad when a mom are too afraid to buy their kid a Batman comic for fear of violence or sex.

I don't know if this was spoken to me or not, but to clarify my background I have a Masters from Duke University that centers around Old and New Testament and Theology. Though this does not ever excuse me from error or mean I have all the answers, I'm not fond of being lumped into a category I don't belong in because you don't agree with my 'interpretation' as everything we share about scripture is interpretation.

Glad you mentioned the "slaves" thing as well. When the bible mentions slaves there are multiple meanings for that word. There were slaves who were treated inproper as ownership of another like what we experienced here in America and abroad hundreds of years ago, but also a man could be a slave in service without negative treatment, almost like hired help. If you owe someone you could sell yourself to them as slaves to work off your debt, that is a different slave from the negative idea associated with the word. We have to rightly divide what the bible is saying because things mean things differently.

Also you mentioned the whole shelfish thing, in the bible depending on what you believe certain practices and beliefs were resolved when Jesus died on the cross, shellfish and those others were........the issue at hand still stands as a practice that is unlawful to the Lord, plain and simple. Sure it doesn't give us the right to condemn for reasons you mentioned earlier at the same time we acknowledge it as a practice that is unlawful for those that believe. The bible is clear on the issue, it doesn't skirt around that, God made them male and female and said a man should never lie with a man. It makes no sense that we cannot point out sin, how else can we learn what was the purpose of it all. People also confuse judging...........when you judge without mercy or arrogance then that is where the error comes in at, we have ever right to judge and make laws and rules based on beliefs, in the bible they loved but they also rightly divided right from wrong and this issue is wrong according to the book. We cannot condemn without looking at ourselves honestly, that is where our love and mercy comes from, this is how we can love those who and learn to work with one another while affirming our belief with the lord..........whew, see what DC has started!!!

You are right at the end of the day it is just a toy forum, but this is good commentary on how sharply divided our country is on the issue. Everyone here is an adult ad we all are on one fence or the other. The divide showcases a very real and serious situation for our country, I personally am tired of the liberal agenda and nonsense, though ironically I can't stand the so-called conservative agenda either, it is very troubling times.

Lastly, I think you have a lot of love in your heart, we may disagree on particulars but you made it very clear you care about hurting people and that is a very real purpose for those who follow the Lord, that is why I don't always agree with the "bible belt, conservatives"..........Jesus could be stern but he dealt with sinners in a loving and caring way, helping them and nuturing them..........and I see that in you.

Thanks for the compliment!

And I do understand what you say regarding slavery. Doulos (I think that's how you spell it with our letters) does mean both slave and servant, and I know it was never the intention of the Bible's authors to create mistreated servants or to allude to an atrocity committed in our own country thousands of years later. But those atrocities all were justified by a misunderstanding of scripture. I merely ask that we really take time to understand this truth when it comes to any command from scripture. I also don't expect that anything I write in a few paragraphs of these boards that's going to affect a lifetime of one's beliefs. It took a long, long time of wrestling and learning to get where I am now and I still have a long, long, way to go until perfection.

Enjoying these conversations. Sorry for being so 'preachy,' but it's kinda my call.

.....why not address hot button issues like the LGBT finally getting the equal civil rights that we (yes that right, I said we) deserve.

wish they'd just let Marvel run with it...their (se)X-Men bend to whatever the current equality struggle is as they have always done.

And yes, right now equal rights and privileges for the LGBT community is pretty much the "hot button" social issue.

because superhero comics that have to do with economic downturns and immigration dont sell...at least not til November rolls around.

Umm, history begs to differ. That Marvel Spidy comic that published with out the "stamp of approval".....well it sold like hot cakes. Election year or no election year.

You know, maybe you can answer a question I've been wondering about ever since Obama came out insuport of marriage equality. Now I take it from your post that your no fan of either Obama or gay marriage, would you say that's right? Well if persons on your side of the political line are so convinced that America wants no part of this so called "gay agenda", then why do so many on the right seem to fear the political power it could give Obama??

I mean if backing marriage equality is so damageing as many on the right (& religious left) say it is.....they why are you all sweating bullets over the votes it could bring come this November?? Shouldn't you be danceing for joy upon Obama's "comeing out"?

It is my opinion that the GOP know full well their ideology is fast going the way of the dinosaurs.

I could say something in response to you TOTAL_CONTROL but I don't want to make this about politics

Ok I got to pry myself from this because the politics forum was shut down because it would get out of hand and if we keep on why Obama did this I will have to close the thread because this will get out of hand

Please keep this to what is about

Oh and to the others here I might lean right but to me there is no Gay Agenda

Please pm the others about the politics and pm me if you have a problem about my politics

Dude, what are you talking about? This whole topic is political. Just cause I'm dismanteling an opposite view with logic is no reason to take issue with my post.

& that's fine. Believe as you like. That's what America is all about. Freedon to choose religion & freedom to be free from religion. I should not be held to the Biblical standards or YOUR ideology, nor should you mine. My getting married as a gay man does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to impact your marriage or any other heterosexual couple. In all the debates I'll ever been in I still have not gotten a quantifiable answer as to why & how gay marriage hurts straight people. Its is my opinion that DOMA has nothing to do with "protecting marriage". Gays getting married hurts no one. But what it does do is help curb all the distructive life style habbits that many in the LGBT community have as a side effect of being discriminated against.

Marriage equality will curb, STDs. Correct me if I'm wrong but the loudest voice of gays spreading AIDS is the Bible belt.....no? Well being in a loveing committed relationship will decrease this spread right? I mean its not like (shall we say) a certain group of people in America WANT gays to die from AIDS.....right? Because that wouldn't be very Christian now would it. This whole effort to deny the LGBT community of our fair share (not special) of civil rights is simply because bigots hate not have the gay community to kick around any more. They already had all their...."minority play things" taken away. Not the world is all set to change AGAIN & take away their last bigot platform that they can be open about.

So have your faith. But marriage is not a product of faith. It might take faith to keep it strong, but it is a very real thing on paper. A person's marriage can be produced upon request for what ever reason......can your God? My point exactly.

Ahhhh, I have been waiting for someone to say that! See I have every right to project my beliefs on you just as you do me, that is what society does, it matters not the origin whether you came to the conclusion on your own or if you read it from a movement or if it is a religious one.........people project beliefs on others, if we didn't we would have one party and no fights in congress and no national division.

We have the right to voice how we want out society shaped, we all have that ability, some will win, some will lose. Also marriage has always been a religious practice that is where it originates from.

People shape the society we live in, down to the rulings on marriage, that is the way of life, not always will people agree and there are always reprocussions for certain actions. I think it is a farce and a delusion when people say for others not to project their religious beliefs on them, its unavoidable, religious or not.

"Project their religious beliefs".....hmm, strange, I don't recall ever stating any such thing in my comments. So let's try this again with what WAS said. I am a gay man. Should I want to get married I can not currently because the Federal Govn. allows various religious sects to have their say in state & Federal policy making (with out paying taxes mind you) & we who do not believe as they do are denied their fair portion of civil rights to marry.

Now....if my being gay "projects" or is seen as such as "projecting" by thoes who do not approve of the LGBT community.....well again I say such views & or objections have still yet to materialize into a solid concret quantifiable fact. Thoes of us in the LGBT community can & do provide solid argument etched in fact as to why & how being denied our full right as U.S. citizens impacted our right to happiness.

& as for the "beginings of marriage"....well I hate to break it to you but the space time continum didn't start in the 1950ies. Which is where most conservatives seem to want to draw their battle ground. They want to ignor the sorted ulgy past of how women were regarded & treated. They don't want to accept that marriage has & continues to....evolve.

We had a political forum here and it was shut down because both sides Don't agree.I did bring Obama up for using this in a political year but I won't go on any farther then that.So saying things like the GOP is going the way of the dinosaurs in there thinking does mean your making it political and going past the real issue of a major character being gay

I will say this. I think DC & WB are gonna stay away from Bruce. The pediphile rumors are bad enough with out makeing him gay. Yes DC wants to get the message boards like this one lit up....but in the right way. If they go kiddie porn there will be no PR firm in the world to do damage control.

Another question, if it is Wally, are they going to charge the Rogues with hate-crimes?

Won't be able to do that with Pied Piper. Maybe he was just trying to hit on him? Anyways,I'm not going to get too worked up. It'll be dropped by the wayside when they dump all of this current garbage.

Looks like Pacino was looking for the wrong guy after all...

Does anyone finds it funny that ppl care if a male superheroes turns out gay, but not a female superhero? Double standards much?

what if they were pushing press on a gay supervillain? nothing negative can be associated with the gay agenda

If that happened then DC Comics would get even more sht, because GLAAD would probably say something like "being gay is being associated with villainy"... The same thing happened for director and screenwriter William Friedkin, when he put villains in his films which turned out to be homosexual.

DC opened Pandora's box with this, so time to have some fun!

Who is and isn't likely to be the one...

Batman - With teen wonders and a bat cave, probably very low on the possibility scale.

Atom - Wow. If it does turn out to be Ray, the jokes are going to fly.

Nightwing - I think Dick has potential (slapping myself for typing that). Pre-52, he was almost axed (both book & character), so it could be a stunt to try and build the character back up again.

Green Arrow - Womanizer with severe commitment issues.

Green Lantern (Hal) - If there were ever two characters would use their fame to score, it'd be Hal & Ollie.

Hawkman - Wrote about it before. DC is trying to shake the whole Hawkman / Hawkgirl couple. That would work.

Jimmy Olsen - Seems a front-runner, based on these boards. Wasn't there a Superman movie script years back that caused such an uproar, and in it Jimmy was gay? Lit the boards up. Maybe DC is trying to get lightning to strike twice.

Aquaman - Not likely, since Aquaman is one of the few bright spots from this new 52, and Mera is a big part of that.

Plastic Man - See Atom.

Apache Chief - He did moonlight with the Village People.

Flash - Another front-runner, although many see it being Wally & not Barry. On the one hand, Wally is all but obsolete now that Barry is back, so it certainly is one way to bring him back.

Firestorm - Ronnie plays the tough but dumb jock, so it could be interesting to see how that played out.

Martian Manhunter - See Plastic Man & Atom (credit to someone who posted that one earlier).

Hawk - Could explain why he's always so angry.

Lobo- Gay or straight, nobody's going near that.

Interesting list. But it damn well better not be Grayson, fck the gay "potential" (I don't see him having any homosexual potential). He should always remain straight. If they turn him homosexual, they will just be reinforcing all the gay Robin jokes from the past...

Whoever is in charge of the new "powers that be" at DC Comics, a long with all of the writers that have been supported the company's suicide since last summer, should all be fired. First they revamp almost everything, which turned out for the worse... Now they want to take an existing character and turn him gay, just to fit in with "the times"... I don't know what hell is going on over at DC, but someone please resurrect Julius Schwartz... Mr. Schwartz really needs to go over there, and put the smack down on the embarrassment that has become DC Comics.

Here's the "facts" as far as has been stated by DC:

It will not be anyone already introduced in the Nu52. That rules out any of the "Big 7" as well as most of the Bat-Family, Super-Family, or Green Lanterns.

It will be a male.

I read somewhere that Dan Didio said it will NOT be Wally West, though I don't know the source of that statement.

It's supposedly a "Major, Iconic" character.

Shazam/Captain Marvel has technically not been introduced yet. His secret identity has and his design has been revealed, but he hasn't popped up in the comics yet. He's fairly major/iconic, and while he had a couple of flirtations in the past, he's never had a "designated girlfriend" like most heroes.

Does anyone finds it funny that ppl care if a male superheroes turns out gay, but not a female superhero? Double standards much?

Most not all straight males like girl/girl I don't know of a straight guy who wants to see two men kiss.I have nothing against gays but I don't want to see them kiss even if it was drawn

Isn't that the problem though? Comic books are mostly made by men for male readers. Having Wonder Woman a lesbian doesn't help people embrace and acknowledge the alternative lifestyle. Rather, it straightens the stereotype of strong women portrayed in the media. It also doesn't help give inspiration to gay male comic readers - other than being a PR stunt, having more diverse characters help diverse individuals relate to them, hence giving them inspiration. The Blue Ear article is a good example of this - this is the main reason why I would love to see more diverse characters in comics. While it may be the majority, Not everyone who read comics are heterosexual white men.
