Avengers Movie

I FINALLY saw this movie today and I can say that I LOVED it. I wasn't expecting to like it nearly as much as I did. I admit that I am always somebody that nitpicks movies for lots of reasons, but for this movie, I was able to easily overlook them. It was pretty great from start to finish. I thought it was very funny with plenty of witty dialogue and hilarious moments. The action was also great all around.

But everybody has already said the things I loved about this movie. It might be my favorite comic movie ever now, if it isn't, it's right up there with the Dark Knight. (But I think it can't touch the DK in some areas, such as styling, music, cinematography, etc. You just watch the DK and you know that it's ART). Avengers was a bit more of a popcorn movie, but it was fantastic.

Now, for the few things I didn't like about it:

Captain America's costume - it is an improvement over the first one, but it still leaves alot to be desired. I think it is mostly the material, it was ill-fitting and looks homemade. I also don't like the zippers and flaps showing, and still hate the helmet thing without the wings. They should have gone for the same kind of material that Spiderman's costume is made of. AND gone with the classic look. So much better.

The lack of Thor - Thor had some good moments, but he wasn't as big a part as I thought he would be at all.. especially considering Loki is his brother. Also, he played a very minor part in the main battler. I was watching this thinking that Thor could have wiped out the entire alien army by himself as they came down the portal. But he barely displayed any of his sheer power in that fight.

Too much Ironman - Ironman was by far the most featured Avenger. It wasn't as bad as the Xmen movies STARRING Wolverine, but he got too much story, screentime, and took too much of the fight. It was almost like Ironman was Loki's brother.

The Chitari - I just didn't like them as they don't mean anything in the real comics. They seemed equally unimportant in the movie. I mean they were just thrown in there to be able to have a massive fight scene. Their entire involvement in the movie was underdeveloped IMO. I understand that they might not have been able to use Skrulls because of the FOX license, but maybe even Frost Giants would have been better. At least we know them and they have a personality. But of course, I guess we needed them to be cosmic aliens for the Thanos connection to work.

How easy it was for Hawkeye to take down the Hellicarrier

but still a great movie, and the kind that you can watch again and again. Loved it!

I agree with a lot of that:

The aliens were right off the shelf, I'll admit that. I had never even heard of them before. But the point was to showcase the Avengers fighting together. Basically you needed a bunch of fodder bad guys to do this, so I get why they were used.

I read that the other actors made a fraction of what Downey Jr. made for this movie. Since he's the big star, that's understandable too. Yeah, Thor probably could have done a lot more damage against those aliens but I'd imagine they wanted to scale his powers back to give the others their time to fight too. I WOULD say I anticipate Superman getting the same treatment in a JLA movie, IF I thought DC was serious about ever getting one done.

I too was not a huge fan of the Cap costume, liked his movie one a lot more. I even found Cap's 6" figure but passed.

Still, a lot of that is really nit picking in the big picture, still an awesome movie.

Funny stuff...

http://www.cracked.com/article_19841_if-avengers-was-10-times-shorter-100-times-more-honest.html

But then look at the negative comments about the article...wow. I mean, these must be some pissed off superfans not to be able to laugh at themselves and what they love in spite of having a $200+ million dollar success

Just like "Raiders of the Lost Ark!" Right, Joss? Mission Accomplished.

Funny! I guess judging by the comments a lot of fanboys still haven't quite grasped the whole "satire" concept. I liked the ending:

"The movie proceeds to make ALL OF THE MONEY, pretty much ensuring the creation of an unbelievably terrible JUSTICE LEAGUE movie.

END ...

EDWARD NORTON

F---.

END"

I don't get the hate for Joss Wheedon. What did he do wrong?

Just never been a fan of his style. Also felt the opening of the Avengers to be a lil too amateurish looking, like it belonged on tv or something

And when someone has the balls to mention a movie like "Raiders of the Lost Ark" in context with what they're trying to sell me, I hold em to it: that goes double for you, Joe Johnston.

"COBIE SMULDERS

Wait, did we get a Michael Bay script by accident? Is there an asteroid headed for Earth?

SAMUEL L. JACKSON

Nah, that's just writer/director Joss Whedon dialogue. Funny when it's trying to be funny, hilarious when it's trying to be serious."

Joss Whedon can be a good writer, but he can pretty much crap on his own creations and he goes on these acid trips that are unbelievable. Plus he has this fetish/obsession that everything he makes has a strong female character that knows enough martial arts to make Batman jealous, and don't get me started on his comedy bits which couldn't feel more forced most of the time. I don't hate him but I don't think he's the genius everyone thinks he is plus 3 out of his 4 series got cancelled. Everyone is giving him all the credit for the movie's success and I think that's a little unfair while he deserves the credit for not crapping on the whole thing. this universe existed before he signed up to direct this movie plus I'm pretty sure that Kevin Fiege and Jon Favreau had some say on the movie since they were executive producers so I'm thinking Marvel reined him a little so this wouldn't turn into Black Widow Alien Slayer.

spot on, Belmont! 100% agree

"SCARLETT JOHANSSON

You're going to need a strong female character down there. My boobs will hold her position open until she arrives, and I can use my pistol, which will be of absolutely no use whatsoever, I don't even know why I'm bringing it."

And at the other end is Michael Bay lining up uderwear models to audition for his next cluster F--- action film.

There must be a happy medium!!!

I agree that the opening of the movie was balancing between cheesy and cool... pretty much all the way through when Loki first met Captain America

but - woah woah woah, let's not compare the Avengers script to any of the Transformers scripts. The T-formers scripts were horrible all around. Everything about those scripts, from the stories to the dialogue, was bad. And I felt gross having to watch all of those dirty little 4-th grade humor jokes.. such as a transformer peeing on somebody or a transformer humping something.

Also was this a transformers movie the avengers would've been background characters while the movie leads would've been a male lead acting like a schizofrenic every 10 minutes and a female lead with a mouth like a Predator getting more @$$ shots than a porn movie and oh yeah the Helicarrier would've had flames painted on the side to make it look edgy. I'm criticizing too much now I'm getting a phone call from Michael Bay telling me to chill, gotta go.

I here that Raiders analogy thrown out a lot, but one cannot equate The Avengers movie to a classic like that...at least not yet. That analogy comes much, much, much later on down the road when Bluray is an outdated format that we cling to like eight track tapes, refusing to buy movies like the Star Wars trilogy for the 15th time. If we're still wearing out copies (and our children are wearing them out, too) then it gets to be equated with Raiders. All that said, I would not be surprised if this ended up to be true, but for now I'll just say it is one of the best movies I've seen in a long time.

PS I love Cracked.

FINALLY!! I've been looking forward to seeing this movie for so long, and like others have implied, having babies at home makes it hard to get out and see movies when they first come out...not that I'm complaining about having a baby at home; quite the contrary, but anyway (lol), I did finally get to see it last night with my wife; it was our 15th wedding anniversary date-night, and what does my wife want to do? She wants to take me out to eat and go see The Avengers. Am I a lucky man, or what? (lol)

I just don't know where to begin...so much has already been said that I loved as well; the shaky start with the heroes not getting along, the dialogue, humor, the awesome "versus" fights sprinkled throughout the film. Oh man...it's the first time in a long time I watched a film with a big grin on my face. It was pure, unadulterated, nerdy comic-book FUN. I kept hearing my students say it was a funny movie over the past couple of weeks, and that kinda concerned me, but once I saw what they meant, it was funny, but in an awesome kind of way.

Also, personally for me, and I don't want to turn this into a religious discussion, but...like others have said, I loved how we got to see an awesome blockbuster popcorn movie that in some small way acknowledged God in a positive way. So many other films and shows, books, games, and just our culture in general these days seems to be so down on God and/or religion in general that it was so refreshing to see something positive said for a change, even if it was one small line. Being a Christian myself, I don't know if a comic-book movie is an appropriate place for that kind of thing, but it sure was appreciated and welcomed, if not expected. Furthermore, we didn't have to put up with any gratuitous language or sexual imagry or innuendos, just pure comic-book awesomeness. This movie proves that you don't need all of the garbage other film-makers think they need to reach all audiences to be a successful film. It's almost as if Coulson's line in the film about people perhaps needing something "old fashioned" in this day and age resonated, at least with me, that movies can be filth-and-language free and still be awesome and enjoyable. But maybe I'm just too old-fashioned myself...

This movie was just so much fun, from beginning to end, and I'd love to see it again. My wife and I did however avoid the 3-D version this time. It just seems like the 3-D stuff looks dull and dark compared to the 2-D version.

Favorite scenes:

Thor landing on the wing of the quinjet was just downright cool. What an entrance. The fight in the forest ending with a three-way stand-off? Priceless. The scene where Banner first turns into the hulk in the dark, confining bowels of the heli-carrier kinda freaked me out, to be perfectly honest. (lol) He was downright scary. There were just so many little "situations" like that throughout the film that seemed to be so cool and almost stood on their own, like little mini-episodes or even comic issues strung together...it just make the film as a whole seem so enjoyable. I loved seeing Stark trade barbs with Loki, whom by the way was a phenominal villain. I'll say this...I never liked Loki in the books. Maybe I never read them enough to get to know the character well-enough, but I love the actor's portrayal of him in these films. I loved the Thor vs. Hulk fight. I so geeked-out at that scene, and my wife thought I was hilarious. One funny thing was that, and I'm telling on my wife here...the whole time Black Widow is asked to go get "The Big Guy" and throughout that whole scene where she meets with him, it never dawned on my wife that he was Dr. Bruce Banner. (lol) Something is mentioned about him turning into the Hulk on the heli-carrier, and she says to me, "That's The Hulk?!" I looked at her, laughed (quietly of course) and said "Yeah...who'd you think it was?!" (lol) I loved the Hulk catching Thor unawares in the midst of battling the aliens and punching him entirely off-screen. I loved Hawkeye, and I'm not getting why others don't seem to...I guess he seems almost mundane in the company of super soldiers, technological geniuses, and demigods. But considering the role he played, I thought he was adequate, even downright cool. The only time he became ridiculous to me was when he's talking to the team up on the roof of the building during the alien invasion and he takes out one of the flying ones with an arrow without even looking. Now that was just downright ludicrous, completely. I loved Hulk smashing Loki in mid-rant. (lol) The whole theater went up in laughter on that one. I loved how Iron Man hand-delivered the nuke to the alien mothership. Was it a rip-off, to nuke the alien invaders? Yes, probably, of more movies than even any Superman film. Aliens, Independence Day...I'm sure the list could go on; those are just two I can think of right off the bat. But was it incredibly satisfying to see the aliens get what was meant for the unsuspecting population of Manhattan thereby making Tony Stark the potentially sacrificial hero that others doubted he could be? Yes, yes, and yes.

I could just go on and on. I looked at my wife when it was over and said, "That has to be the best comic-book movie I have ever seen." You know what she said? "That's probably the best movie I've ever seen period!" And that's coming from "Mrs. The Help/Steel Magnolias/The Notebook/Pretty Woman" herself. (lol) I can't wait to see it again...

holy moly! The best movie ever?!?! wow that is quite an endorsement. I don't think I can put it into my top 30-50 just yet because the most important thing to a good movie for me is the story and that's not one of this films strongest areas IMO. But I'll have to see it again, and again.

Better than Steel Magnolias?! only if we abandoned Ultimates Sam Jackson Fury for Classic Tom Skerrit Nick Fury. :)

You're so right I was watching the season finale last Monday and I thought to myself the Avengers make up artist did a better work on her than the ones from HIMYM, well that and I think she lost like 8lbs to fit in the Shield outfit.

Ditto.

Also, Avengers is number 1 again this weekend. Will this top the not-as-great Avatar. Fingers crossed. Star wars is already in the crosshairs.

I am surprised and pleased that our movie did so well for so long!!! Anyone who grew up reading comics, watching the cartoons, and just know most of the Marvel U mythos can claim this to be their movie!!! -_-

To see those characters we know and love up there, written and acted so well, it brings your inner child back out!!! I know I can say I was like a kid once again!!! Grinning from ear to ear!!!

Make mine Marvel indeed!!!
