Dan Aykroyd Finally Admits Bill Murray Will Not Do Ghostbusters 3

Despite plans to introduce a younger generation of spook fighters, and despicable plans to possibly recast Peter Venkman, Dan Aykroyd now seems resigned to the fact that Ghostbusters 3 will not happen--probably.

While in London to promote Crystal Head, his own brand of vodka, Aykroyd admitted to The Telegraph that “it’s a surety that Bill Murray will not do the movie,” though he quickly added that “there is still interest from the studio.”

“The studio, the director Ivan Reitman and Harold Ramis feel there must be a way to do it, but Bill Murray will not do the movie. He doesn’t want to be involved. He’s got six kids, houses all over America. He golfs in these tournaments where they pay him to turn up and have a laugh. He’s into this life and living it. I know we’d have a lot of fun [but] I can’t be mad at him. He’s a friend first, a colleague second. We have a deep personal relationship that transcends business and he doesn’t want to know.”

This story started ugly, and has only grown more bizarre over time. Murray went from stubbornly ignoring media inquiries about a sequel to reportedly shredding a copy of the script and mailing it back to Ramis. While Bill balked, stories started circulating that Aykroyd wanted female Ghostbusters like Eliza Dushku or Alyssa Milano to take over the power packs. Then there was the rumor that Murray might come back to the franchise as a ghost.

This, however, is the first time Aykroyd has gone on record to confirm that Murray will not be involved in any sequel. And while the comedian tells the interviewer that they’re “not going to do a movie that exploits the franchise,” I think the only reasonable thing to do at this point is cut your loses and stop all of this foolish talk. No one wants to see a Ghostbusters film without Murray. We’re not even sure we’re be interested in Ghostbusters 3 with Murray on the team … as a ghost, or as a living, breathing, wise-cracking Ghostbuster. Pull the plug. Pour your vodka, Mr. Aykroyd. Chalk this one up as “what cold have been.” Because without Murray, there should be no sequel. Period.

I love Ghostbusters its been one of my most favorite franchises since I was a toddler. But I think it should just be left as it is, like many above said, without Murray it just doesn't have the true Ghostbusters feel. If Mr. Murray doesn't want to do it, then its just probably for the best... Just look at how some movies suck or feel dragged when they are dug up after years even decades since the previous sequel... Some examples Godfather 3 and Indy 4 (man what the hell were they thinking with that one??).

I would have really hated to see guys like Jonah Hill or Shia Labeouf to be filling in GB suits... They were most likely going to go for those kinds of actors, since those are some of the current comedic young actor types in Hollywood right now. it would've been cool if they had made GB3 in the 90s, I always wanted to see Chris Farley as one of the Ghostbusters. But lets just face It, GB3 may never come to be. I'm also for the idea of the original cast to continue to do new stories through videos games.

A lot has changed since the original GB movies... For instance I could have never pictured or even imagined the day where Egon, would have become a lot bigger than Ray... That Spengler sure loves his Twinkies...

P.S. No disrespect at all intended toward Mr. Ramis or Mr. Aykroyd.

Bill Murray is an artsie fartsie type now he shuns comedy like Micheal Keaton did

on the money, it was a huge fight to get the likeness for the toys and I'm sure the game voice he did must of been like pulling teeth. in interviews he seems like a jerk that's above everything. oh well I would of been happy with a mediocre movie, just to see a story from th e OG guys would of been cool. I hate actors that think they are to good to remember the roles that made them famous, like the ones that won't go to comic cons, and won't do interviews unless it's big media. jack holes

Screw Murray, its time to reboot this franchise like they have done with so many others. Go back to the beginning, bring in some new actors, fresh races, new comedic talent, maybe keep ramis, aykroyd, reitman as a creative team. Im against most re boots but on this one I say let it rip...

Who do you think they should get to replace the originals?

I also think they need to re boot the Indiana Jones franchise, who would make a new good Indy?

In my opinion I think a reboot would probably be a bad idea... One of the main problems with modern Hollywood is that they just rehash/re-heat the same stuff through reboots... Hollywood has has been lacking originality, for years...and just remake movies... They should just let movies be, and create new ideas instead of remaking movies that have already become classics... In my opinion "Ghostbusters" is up there with "Once Upon A Time In America" (uncut version), "Escape from New York", and "Fight Club" in terms of it being a cult classic. I personally would not want to see a reboot of Ghostbusters or Indiana Jones movies retold over and over... But some people will and that's fine, to each his own...

I'm surprised that Hollywood hasn't rebooted James Cagney's "The Public Enemy", or E.G. Robinson's "Little Caesar"....since Hollywood loves butchering classics...

I woke up to a morning show saying this movie is basically in limbo without Murray.

When you think about it, do we really NEED this movie, anyway? I realize there are GB fans, I like the first ones, too. But there's a 23 year gap between these movies, I'm thinking there's a huge potential to be another "Crystal Skull".

The New Ghostbusters! Starring Vince Vaughn, Will Farrell, Owen Wilson, and Chris Rock with Jennifer Anniston and Samuel L. Jackson. Special Appearance by P. Diddy as Slimer.

Do we really need this? Hasn't Karate Kid taught us anything!?!

Are you serious? Everything under the sun has gotten a reboot, even the A Team. I was thinking more like Seth Rogen or Jim Carey as Peter, Jason Seigle, Billy Gardell, or Kevin James as Ray, Stephen Colbert or Steve Carell as Egon, Jonah Hill or Micheal Cera as Louis Tully, Lisa Rhena as Janine, Kenan Thompson as Winston

See...most of the people you mentioned there anoy the heck out of me (I like Jason Segel) and that is likely what you'd be getting for a cast.

Well I really hate flames on Optimus Prime in the Movies and the insanly large warp nacels on the Abrams Enterprise but others like it and it brings in new crowds. I work with kids and I was talking about ghostbusters the other day and they were like "Huh?"

So if you dont like my actors who would you get other than the originals?

Just use his brother Brian. The two of them look alike. The only difference is Brian's voice. Heck, that way you can bring in the Spongebob crowd. They know his voice from him doing The Flying Dutchman.

Y'know, for years I thought that was his dad. (lol)

As much as I love the original Ghostbusters films, and as much as I would love to see a third one, it just would not be the same without Bill Murray playing Peter Venkman. Like others have said, too much time has elapsed for it to be relatable and relevant. And I say noooooo to a reboot. The original films are classics that should not be "reimagined". The only reason I'm tolerating the supposed Robocop reboot is because I love the character and the concept so much. To me, the concept behind Robocop can be more open to interpretation because of the deeper sci-fi/technology angle, although the original film is a classic also that probably shouldn't me tampered with either.

Everything can be and will be reimagined, rebooted, or repacked for additional sales.

I just don't get how he can do Zombieland and the GB game but turns his nose up at the new film.

"Any regrets?" "I don't know...Garfield maybe."

The guy can do two Garfield movies, he can do GB 3.

It's important to note that Akroyd never said no GB 3, just that they've decided to press on without Bill. Love it, like it, or hate it, it seems the studio really wants this film. It's why so much merchandise has popped up recently. One can only hope that Murray cracks in the process and, at least, makes an appearance.

Again, a couple days behind a microphone is much easier to do than months and months on set: easy money.

GB 3: The Video Game is our only hope.

Honestly I kinda of want a new video game more at this point then a movie. The game was freaking awesome! The only game I ever bought, beat, sold, regretted selling, and rebought it again. I love this game, period. Id love a sequel to that. And even then, we dont have to face the harsh realities of the actors looking older. Just saying, I think another game is the way to go.
