My Robert Atkins Cobra Commander custom

Wow, I haven't done a GI Joe custom in awhile... Either way, hopefully this'll get me out of my funk. Robert Atkins(GI Joe comic artist, for those who don't know) threw out a challange for customizers to make a custom off of his new Cobra Commander design. I submitted my custom last night, so I guess I can show it now. I was going to post this last night, but I was up late and tired, so I thought I'd wait till today.

Here's the ref picture I went by. There are a couple pther pics out there, but that was the main one, and one to give an idea of what I was going for:

I took this pic as a teaser pic for my friends... I'm glad I did, cause it shows a close up of the helmet. I'm pretty proud of it, as it might look like a rev viper helmet, but it's actually one viper helmet and then another viper head with the face plate dremeled out and hollowed out to fit. It was hard work, and I'm glad I went this route. I also had to do some modding to make it less viper looking, covering up the electronic plate on the back and then sculpting on the vents and teeth(that was a pain that almost didn't happen). Overall, I'm really happy with the outcome.

I'll copy and paste the parts breakdown from my entry, as it's pretty extensive. I think I used 10-11 figures for parts or accessories, lol..

Parts list:

Helmet- 25th Viper, dremeled hollow, sculpted back and sides.

Faceplate- PoC Viper, sculpted on chin and teeth.

Cape- top part, Resolute Commander, modded, trimmed and sculpted/bottom part, vinyl material.

Shoulder pads- 25th Wraith, trimmed down.

Shoulder straps- Marvel Universe Rogers & Indiana Jones pouch strap

Holster & straps- Marvel Universe Rogers w/ Spy Troops holsters modded

Upper Arms- Star Wars Rum Sleg, sculpted arm pouch & strap.

Lower Arms- Resolute Alley Viper

Torso- Star Wars Imperial Knight attached to Marvel Showdown Logan stomach, sculpted over to match armor.

Crotch and ball socket joints- Marvel Showdown Logan.

Upper legs- Resolute Alley Viper, modded to fit marvel joints, sculpted leg straps.

Knees & Lower legs- Resolute Cobra Commander.

I've seen a couple of the other entries on some of the other Joe sites, I can't wait to see them all together, hope there are a couple more surprises too.

Yeah, I haven't perfected the waterslide decals yet. I plan to add it, just gotta get it right. I attempted to print out the logo on a piece of tape, that was taped onto another piece of tape(so I could remove it) taped to a piece of paper, but that didn't turn out that great, lol.

I've been trying to enjoy "real" life, more than my eLife, lol... trying to cut down on the internet as it eats up waaay too much time. But I'm part of a local committee for my school, so now I'm forced to be on the computer, so you should see me a bit more.. :D

hmmm... what could it be?

So I opened it up, and SWEET, it's the art book, some post cards and a print from Robert Atkins.

ooooh... it gets better:

Too cool, he signed the art book and the print. Joerhyno likes this...

Wait, what's that in the bubblewrap and why's it soooo freakin' heavy????

HOLY MOLEY... This thing is awesome, it's made out of strong wood(ish) material, and thick glass, the door locks shut on the side and it has a real cool system on the back, you screw this metal flat piece to the wall, then you slide the case onto it. So, the shelf isn't attached to the wall, just that metal bracket thing, so you can take it down when you want to if it makes it easier and what not... Anyway, I love it and I wanna get some more, lol.

I love the art they printed on it too, it's not just printed on paper and hen glued to the back, it's printed on the plastic that's on the back, so it's there for good.. and the cool thing? The art is from the artist I won it from, one of his Snake Eyes covers.. ever cooler!!!

I usually don't pimp things unless the're cool.. but man, they're having a sale, so if you have the extra cash, try to get one of their shelves...

Tell them you found out about them because of Robert Atkins Art:

I might have to get another case or two when we get our tax return..

If anyone gets one soon, let me know which one and how it is.

I hope that answers your question... :D I didn't win 1st place, but the "winner" chose the original art as his prize, I got the other prize for runner up, which was the shelf. Here's what Robert had to say about the contest:

Big congrats Joe! That is an excellent looking fig, and it sounds like hard work. I agree dremeling that head was worth it! Great swag you got there too!

I've seen those display cases, and they look amazing! I didn't know they printed images on them? Was this special made?

I think this was a special case for RA, I looked on the site and they didn't even have a case this size for Joes, I did see on facebook they said they're going to have a bunch new Joe cases this year, so hopefully the movie will help them have more themed ones.
