The New Justice League Comic

I just finished issue #3 last night, and I'm really loving this book. I was initially intrigued simply because I love Jim Lee's work; he could do a book with stick figures and I'd probably get it. (lol) But I'm also enjoying the storyline too. I love the "Marvels"-style paranoia that's going on concerning superheroes in this new universe, and I love the epic story that seems to be unfolding. The characterizations are done very well, especially when it comes to Wonder Woman. Now I will admit having never really been a fan of hers, but I love how she's portrayed in this book. She seems to be this fierce warrior out of her element, kinda like how I've heard Thor is depicted in his recent film. And I like how she's carrying around a sword, like she's ready for a fight at anytime or place. The only thing I'm not 100% sold on is Superman. He looks great, but he's kinda arrogant and cocky. Superman to me is a stoic yet approachable gentleman, and powerful yet very humble. He just seems a little too cocksure and irreverent for my tastes. Otherwise I'm having a blast reading this book. What do you all think so far?

The only thing I'm not 100% sold on is Superman. He looks great, but he's kinda arrogant and cocky. Superman to me is a stoic yet approachable gentleman, and powerful yet very humble. He just seems a little too cocksure and irreverent for my tastes.

 

Chalk this up to DC STILL not sure who/what they want the character to be. My guess is they'll just keep trying different things until it clicks.

 

As far as the comic itself, #1 has been in my hold bag for three months, the rest are still readily available (like all DC titles that don't have #1 on them). I'm glad you like it, more word of muth might push me off the fence. I'm still not sold on the reboot, but maybe I'll pick it up this week. I am a Jim Lee fan after all...

I'm not buying any of these, but I flipped thru some issues in TRU and the thing I noticed was, despite none of these heroes having met each other, all their costumes look exactly the same. Superman, Batman, Flash, Green Lantern all have the same 'plate' armor design. Wouldn't they all have run into each other in the SuperHero Costume store since they were all shopping in the same dept?

I too love this book and I agree Supes seems to be a little to cocky, but it seems he is only this way with the other heroes and villains, who knows since it's restarting maybe down the line something will happen that will humble him a bit.

Yeah, JLA (excuse me...JL) and Action Comics are both set in the past and both Supermans are on the cocky side. Not so much so in the Superman title, which is present day. Maybe something does happen between then and now.

 

As for the costumes looking the same, keep in mind that they also all ran around in spandex originally. Maybe "plate armor" is the new tights. Not that I like it that much. OK for Batman, but these costumes are supposed to be as varied as the people wearing them. Flash's is from the Speed Force, GL's comes from the ring, Superman's is supposedly part of his Kryptonian heritage. Yet they all look like like different colored versions of the same armor? ***Groan***

I'm really kind of disappointed with Superman's new look. No briefs with the red belt and boots looks odd. It doesn't seem to fit Supes. Batman looks a little off with the "no briefs" look, too, though I love the way Jim Lee draws Batman. Maybe it's just cause I'm not used to it since GL and Flash have always (or often) looked that way.

 

I like the little details like Flash's mask coming up on his chin and GL's (and Superman's?) split collar at his neck.

Not really. If you think about it why would Clark Kent walk into a costume store?

If we can be completely honest, I think the new designs were as a result of some Warner Bros movie studio boardroom meeting, and 'implemented' afterwards by Jim Lee.

I read the first few issues of Red Hood and the Outlaws last night. It's pretty good. It makes me interested in the Justice League and other reboots (some of them).

The amount of differences in the DC Books, in my opinion, does not warrant the name reboot. They shook up the universe...GL story in his core books (GL, GL Corps, Red Lanterns, New Guardians) is the SAME pre flash point, Batman got another age face lift and they tweaked on the amount of people who KNOW the secret, other than that Tim is Red Robin (same as pre flashpoint), Damian is still Robin (check same as pre flashpoint), Dick is Nightwing (if you remember they set this up towards the end of the Batman and Robin book again pre flashpoint). As for Barb they ran a story in the Birds of Prey (pre flashpoint) called "The Death of Oracle" she went offline as Oracle and named Wendy (Firewall) as the new tech guru for "The Network". The actual JL book is still in the past i think by book 5 we will see it in normal time. They are introducing the team bit by bit i think Book 5 we get the JL vs Darksied.

 

After taking to some of the artist in the industry they all share the same theory...this update was all about Supes and DCs attempt at again trying to keep the Schuester Estate from taking Superman/Boy away.

 

Funny thing is this arguement/debate comes up 3 times a day at the comic shop i work at...its quite funny

There's still a lot of stuff changed that doesn't include Superman.

 

Teen Titans is completely blown up, it appears anything that happened before was erased. Wally West, apparantly doesn't exist any more. Red Arrow has his arm back. Martian Manhunter is suddenly part of Stormwatch...

 

I'm gonna go ahead and still call it a reboot. They didn't want to gamble on GL and Batman, their two most popular characters. As a result you get a half@$$ reboot that applies to most charaters but not (completely) to others. Maybe the reason why IS all explained in Flashpoint, if so I'll just ave to take your word for it. I'm done with convoluted "This-Bad-Guy-Altered-Reality-Just-Because" series'.

The first story arc of Justice League takes place 5 years earlier, as well as Action Comics. So Darkseid invades earth 5 years before most of the other DC titles.

So far this "relaunch" for DC Comics does serve some good for the less mainstream characters. I'm enjoying the new Animalman and Swampthing. The new Batman comics doesn't really change much other than turning Tim Drake into a Red Rooster and canceling Batman Inc.

I read the first issue. I really tried to give this thing the benefit of the doubt but it was pretty juvenile. The dialogue was obnoxious and the plot absolutely BEGGED the audience not to think about it too hard.

The art is great, the story is average. My biggest complaint is it cost like $4 and you get very little over all story development with each issue. Basically its Oh look its Superman, or look its Flash, oh look its Wonder Woman. Next issue oh look its Aquaman. And as some mentioned the characters seem for the most part identical to what we already know, its just a reintroduction of the same old same old. So in short I love the Jim Lee art but when you consider the cost of this title I don't think its really worth it, and certainly nothing terribly ground breaking or new we haven't already seen in the cartoons and comics and such.

Well you have to admit that they can't deviate too much from the core of what these characters have been for the past three-quarters-of-a-century. If they do then long-time fans riot and sales plummet. New readers are interested at first then their interest would eventually wane because they're not necessarily invested in these characters. So it's a case of Catch 22...do you change things radically to ensure new albeit temporary readership, or do you go the run-of-the-mill route and bore long-time readers with the same ol' same ol'? I personally think DC is somewhere in the middle with their "New 52" promotion, and that's a good thing, although it's a fine line to walk.

I caved and bought #1. I wasn't blown away. If anything, I'll wait 'til the TPB comes out for the rest. Maybe.

Well, I have to admit...I was never a regular DC reader, and the few Justice League-related books I own include the first seven or eight issues of Grant Morrison's JLA book from a few years back and the Kingdom Come series. That's it. So maybe that's where I'm coming from. It's still new and interesting to me. In that respect I can see where some of you guys are coming from; if you've read hundreds of DC and/or Justice League books, and these new books aren't a radical departure from what you've seen a thousand times before, then yeah, I could understand being underwhelmed. But see, the reboot is working on some level I guess...it sucked me back in, a casual reader that's not bought books on a regular basis in years, and now, all of a sudden I'm finding myself at the local comic book store that I've neglected for absolutely ever seeing if the latest issues are out. It's brought back an appreciation I haven't had for comics in a long time, and it's a fun feeling.

I hear ya Yojoebro i didnt expand into the whole shebang just hit on my favs.

 

Cloud- Tim has been Red Robin for sometime before Flashpoint. He got burnt up and had to wear a full cowl on his head and took on the Red Robin mantle because he couldnt wear his domino mask. And in this weeks The Dark Knight, Batman makes a nod at Batman Inc and from what i understand The Dark Knight is where Inc will resurface.

 

Teen Titans needed to go this route because they had to reinvent Superboy (AGAIN)

 

Again i have been reading All the Bat books and GL books for a LONG time now...So the "change" for me was minimal...I have to applaud DC on Aquamans revival...that book actually is good if you havent read that i say give it a chance!
