The 10 best outraged fan comments about Lucas changing Star Wars

Are Star Wars fans done drinking the George Lucas Kool-Aid? Die-hard lovers of the original films are riled up over the latest changes made for the Sept. 16 Blu-ray release. Between Ben Kenobi's altered Krayt Dragon call, blinking Ewoks and Darth Vader's overdramatic "Nooooo" being added, fans ... are ... pissed!

Lucas' constant tinkering has become a turnoff, and even the most loyal Star Wars fans can't take it anymore. After the director confirmed to the New York Times that "Nooooooo!" has been added to one of the most pivotal moments in the entire series—it was the straw that broke the camel's back. There have been rumors of boycotts, petitions and plenty of confirmed web outrage.

I'm kinda disappointed that he wants to keep altering his films.

I just started to think of it as his way of trying to keep Star Wars in people's minds and hoping to keep it 'new and fresh'.

I recall reading some blurb in a magazine about how to get one's children into Star Wars. Kinda like how classic western's or wwII movies dont appeal to me

Star Wars is now getting (has gotten maybe) to the point where the current generation just doesnt feel it.

Course his mind might just be slowly degenerating and he still thinks he's working on the movies as if it were still the 70's or 80's.

Sooner or later he'll CG Jabba in nearly every scene. Jabba waving in the background during the Hoth Battle, a ghostly Jabba next to Anakin, ObiWan and Yoda at the end

of RotJ.

George Lucas has gone too far in further altering the original trilogy. Fixing existing visual effects, like removing matte lines, adding CGI X-Wings, etc is one thing, but what's been done now, and in the first Special Editions, is too much. The first error was Vader's, "Alert my Star Destroyer," line from The Empire Strikes Back. Did anyone really need to see Vader travel from Cloud City to the Executor? The second was goofy "Jedi Rocks" song in Jabba's Palace in the movie Return of the Jedi. Now we get to know what Obi-Wan sounds like when he sits on a cactus and an line from Darth Vader that nobody asked for.

If the original trilogy sucked so much, why did it produce at least two generations of Star Wars fans?

That's what the prequels and the Clones War cartoons are for, creating new generations of Star Wars fans.

I'm buying the Blu Ray. The wife and I have a big party set up since Star Wars is one of the great loves we shared and that brought us together. I enjoyed Episodes 1 and 2, but loved Episode 3. I also own seasons 1 and 2 of the Clone Wars. I am a Star Wars fan with several lightsabers, two Jedi outfits, and enough toys to fill several rooms. Have I ever once complained about changes to the trilogy over the years? Nope. Has George Lucas ever raped my childhood? Not unless I was rufied or something. Did watching the video of ROTJ DV saying no before tossing the Emperor insight rage beyond rage? Not at all, but I may have shook my head with a smirk on my face.

At the end of the day it is just a movie. A movie that changed the sci fi genre and impacted I cannot imagine how many people, but still just a movie. The fact that there is such anger over these changes is beyond my comprehension and makes me laugh. Just don't buy it! Stick to those original versions on DVD that GL made it sound like weren't going to get released. Hope that he'll eventually release the original versions on Blu Ray (cuz he will). What else can you do?

The only thing I didn't like about that article is that it made it sound like 'fanboys' should be against this. In the end, the squeaky wheel gets the oil and the masses who will be content to buy this Blu Ray will more than likely do it without posting a thing on these boards. Meanwhile my hope is that this rage ends up being 'as if millions of voices suddenly screamed out in terror and were suddenly silenced.'

I'm sure that Georgie-boy will probably now find a way to sue whomever made that picture, just for using his likeness without permission...

And then later he will have his legal team, "alter and remaster" the case brief-- to capture "his ideal vision" of the brief...

Just feel sorry for the guy being sued, if the judge is wearing a Jedi robe...

George can tinker with the movies all he wants. I think the changes are stupid but am I outraged? No, I'm just not going to buy.

You know watching the original films can be even more satisfying with all these other fake versions on the market? I watched A New Hope on VHS and always do a little cheer because Han shots first. I had a smile of satisfaction because I knew I was watching the BEST version of the movie right there.

I don't know if those films will ever be on Blu-ray (I'd even be happy with just DVD) if they ever are, I'm sure it will only come at a time when the money deems it to be right.

they did released unaltered vers of the trilogy on DVD a few years ago, but I heard the quality was garbage.

Its hard to believe that a movie series that was such a part of my childhood, has so little affect on me today.

I don't think the Blu-ray versions of these films would even make my top 200 future Blu-Ray purchase list right now.

You heard correctly. One really wonders why such crap was made available in the first place, even if it was free.

The quality was poor b/c it was simply a transfer from the old laser disc.

In any case, I've canceled my preorder. It's not like George will ever hurt for money even if no one buys these, but at least I've done my part.

Ever since the first Special editions were released in theaters years ago, I have the belief that George Lucas is a one trick pony, and the one of the main reason he is so rich is that he is milking the heck out of his Star Wars trilogy.

I mean, no offense to George Lucas fans, but he really never made a good movie in two decades. I have no idea if American Graffiti is any god, but his prequels movies suck; I am not really counting Indiana Jones since I am sure that was more Spielburg than Lucas.

I think that if Lucas left SW alone after ROTJ, he wouldn't generate as much wealth as he has now

My problem is that it's no longer the film that changed the genre. With the changes and additions, it's not the same.

Take Blade Runner for instance. There have been a number of different versions released and, although the basic film is the same, all have a different feeling and impact on the viewer.

I think this article on Topless Robot is a fantastic read that highlights what George Lucas thought of altering films 30 years ago. It just shows how effective boatloads of money are in getting people to change their opinions.

Amen brother. I too am mystified by the negative backlash. I don't feel like I've seen any changes so far that drastically alter the movies for me. In fact, it's rather exciting for me to see a beloved film in a new way, especially since I've seen the originals hundreds if not thousands of times.

I love the original trilogy, changes and all, and I love the prequels. I don't care to admit it. Are these films perfect? No. Do I think George Lucas is a cinematic genius? Probably not. Do I enjoy them immensely and try not to over-analyze or think about them too much? Absolutely. I personally can't wait to get the Blu-ray set and watch it over and over and over again.

George Lucas' constant tinkering has taken something away from these movies. People can say that it's no big deal, or it doesn't matter, but I think it does have a very real impact on the viewing experience. I'm not saying all of the changes are bad; pulling back to see more of Mos Eisley can provide a richer back drop for the story. However some of his changes detract from the emotional reaction of the film. Han shooting first and Vader's "Nooo" are perfect examples. They take away from their personalities which we've come to know over the years. They cause you to feel "x" when you used to feel "y". Why aren't we able to get the revised version and the original version?? I was on the fence about buying the Blu Ray, but after reading about the changes, I am deciding not to.

Yes I do, but I'm not sure what your point is. No disrespect meant, of course. I promise my comments are not aimed at anyone specific. I just think that some people take Star Wars way too seriously, and that's coming from me, who happens to be a major fan. I'm not your average take-it-or-leave-it kind of fanatic either. I'm pretty hard-core.

Eh I bet he reases the origional movies onto Blu-Ray also.He knows what he is doing the pissed off fans will buy the origional version son Blu-Ray when the sales of these die down

I'm thinking it may not be so soon for the originals on Blu-ray. They're doing SW in 3D right? I'm thinking 3D Blu-ray will be NEXT after this release, THEN maybe the originals. Hope I'm wrong!

My point is that the people who want the unaltered OT think that the movies are just fine the way they are. I never thought there was much wrong with them either. It wasn't until the Special Editions that it even dawned on me that the special effects could be improved. I was a big Star Wars fan in the 1990s. I read all I could about the movies. I knew about the Jabba the Hutt scene that didn't make it into A New Hope, but I never missed it.

Exactly right. Star Wars became what it is based on the films that came out as they were. People didn't see Star Wars Episode IV (aka just Star Wars at the time) multiple times in 1977 and walk out of the theater thinking, "WOW - I can't wait until this kid Lucas polishes this up and adds some crap to it in thirty-five years. THEN we'll have a great film!" The room for improvement did not detract from what was an incredible experience - and if all Lucas did now was clean up the effects a bit I think everyone would be happy. Sadly, he didn't stop there.

That's my thought. Its his universe. He created it and we were there for the ride and a great ride it was and still is.Yes,the changes he made back in 1997 where rather idiotic but some stuff he added was pretty cool. Here's the good:

Anh:

The adding more people and creatures to Mos Easley. The the original it looked like a small town.

Adding the Jabba sequence was cool even though the Jabba charater could have been done better.

The multitudes of stormtroopers that han runs into on the Deathstar instead of 3 guys.

Some of the enhanced dogfight scenes.

Adding the Luke/Biggs scene on yavin.

ESB:

The redo of Cloud City and showing the landing bay of Vader's Star Destroyer.

ROTJ:

The celebration scenes on Coud City,Tatooine and Coruscant were very cool.

There was some stuff I liked. The greedo shooting first was stupid.Sorry for the long post.

That was the only bad thing that was added to ESB. Did you really need to see a recycled shot from ROTJ to know that Darth Vader went back to his Star Destroyer?

Okay...now that you mention it, I absolutely hated that addition. I preferred the p!$$ed-off Vader that simply said, "Bring my shuttle." The tone of those few words told you volumes about Vader's disappoinment and anger over losing Luke. I hate hate hate the new line Lucas added, although it was kinda cool to see one of his shuttles docked on Bespin. I could do without Greedo shooting first and the "Vader leaves Bespin" scene. The former ruined Han's character somewhat and looked off effects-wise anyway, and the other was simply unnecessary.

Alright, I concede...Lucas should quit tinkering. (lol) But I will still get the Blu-ray set because the good vastly outweighs the bad in my opinion. For example, I liked alot of the stuff they added to the X-Wing shots and what-not in ANH. And I liked the new animated dewbacks. I also liked seeing a more dynamic Sarlacc creature in ROTJ. There are just way more positives to me than negatives when it comes to the changes. But he should probably quit while he's ahead.
