I remember seeing as a child a G.I. Joe series that was slightly different than the original one, they had like a super tank called the "General" I think, the Joes were led by Capt. Gridiron a football themed soldier, one of the Cobras had backpack that shot rockets whenever he screamed bang! Was this a different series or a season of the original one????

Sounds like you're talking about the DIC series that aired in the early 90's.

Yes, it was different than the Sunbow series from the 80's.

It was still the same series: GiJoe a Real American Hero ... it's just that the cartoons of that time period were made by a different animation company. The toys were still made by Hasbro of course.

the Cobra you are talking about is called Metalhead. He is one of Destro's Iron Grenadiers

Thanks Clam not remembering the name was killing me I love that character he was a comic relief most of the time but he was colorful. If this series comes out in DVD I'll get it for sure I tried searching in Best Buy and I didn't even find the original series. I remember loving the figures there was one in particular that had a gas mask and a sniper rifle in pieces that you could put together or store the pieces in the backpack, that's something I loved from the Joe figures they didn't spared expense with the accessories. Thanks for all your help.

That character was Bullhorn.

If you don't know about it, this is the best site on the internet for all things GI Joe:

Most of the characters you're mentioning were from 1990:

I know a lot of collectors always mention '84-'86 being the cream of the crop for GI Joe figures, but 1990 is right up there in my book. It had a lot of great characters with a lot of cool accessories.

Here's the link to yojoe's DIC cartoon mention:

Awesome!!! thanks I'm bookmarking that site I just took a trip back to my childhood man I loved that Bullhorn figure. For me the early 90s were golden when it came to action figures. Seeing this site and looking through the figures I realized that G.I. Joe is without a doubt the definitive toyline for boys at least in those times. The accessories, vehicles and who could forget playsets everything about it rocks; unfortunately times have changed and certain factors make today's toy companies think twice about including accessories and making vehicles and don't get me started on playsets.

Some of the 90's figures were amazing, I even loved star brigade Duke and B.A.A.T. (admittedly the rest of star brigade was garbage and I didn't use them as they were intended but still...)

the 90's toon however is a different story imo but to each his own. I loved bullhorn, but Metal-head was probably the number 1 and a large list of why i wasn't a fan of the DIC series when i tried to go and rewatch it.

Oh man was the DIC cartoon subpar to the Sunbow version!!! From the wack opening theme song, to the poorly done animation!! This series was the worst!!! Would have loved a third year of the Sunbow version instead!!!

I recently acquired this whole series and it was just plain hard to watch. I was able to force my way through the Dragonfire storyline, but the rest was really so poorly done it hurt my eyes. It made the Sunbow seem dark and gritty which is funny if you know those episodes well.
