Let's talk about the PS3 hack here

This is pretty crappy. Ive heard that it isn't Anonymous doing it. They were initially, as the trial of GeoHotz was going on but after the verdict, they stopped. Of course that is mere speculation and Im sure its probably still all them doing it. Of course anyone can call themselves anonymous. It doesnt seem like anon's MO when it was said that some people were using modded firmware to access the PS store and download anything they wanted for free and then somehow get everyone elses info. I mean Anon did it to attack SONY and what they did with GeoHotz not the actual PSN users. This recent discovery is more for personal gain than to take revenge against sony.

I have heard it is Anonymous, but the ones who have just joined the group as oppose to the veteran Anonymous.

The difference is the the newer group is more public than Anon - I think they made several facebook groups, which goes against Anonymous' mo

There no doubt there a coalition between the hacked free network and the non hacked pay one. Glad I paid for 360.

Btw, just because Sony decides to remove features doesn't mean they should be hacked. Just saying.

They aren't hacking it because Sony removed features. They are hacking it in retaliation to the fact that Sony was trying to get IP addresses and ban anyone who had visited the website, or viewed the videos of the person who originally did the jailbreak hack...which didn't affect Sony IN ANY WAY. All it allowed for, from what I'm reading, was modification of your PS3...which you own, and should be allowed to do what you want with it, IMO. It gave the ability to run different firmware/software on your PS3, but Sony was all butt-hurt that someone could exploit it for the purpose of pirating games.

It would be like me buying a Fender guitar, and replacing the pickups, and then Fender suing me for modifying their guitar...it's BS.

These people hacked the PSN because they also thought it was BS that Sony was suing geohot and trying to get IP addresses of anyone who had viewed his site, and ban them...regardless of whether or not they actually used the jailbreak hack.

Um, yeah, it's really super that they're fighting for such a righteous, important cause, but it's still BS. Plenty of people don't like how the music industry handles piracy, but that doesn't justify hacking the Itunes or Amazon MP3 stores and stealing the information of the customers. Or, to use your example, temporarily screwing up the Fender guitar of everybody who owns one and stealing their personal information in the process. Yeah, that'll show those lawyers!

I know it's a different situation, but I'm reminded of several years back when one of the guys on Penny Arcade got a virus that screwed up his computer, and the creators of the virus had released a statement along the lines of "Bill Gates, why do you allow things like this to happen?" I can't remember it word-for-word, but part of his response was: "Hanes doesn't make bulletproof underwear, but that doesn't give you the right to shoot me in the crotch. I don't care if you're making some BS statement about the lack of underwear security, the end result is the same: Hanes keeps making the same underwear and I can't use my johnson."

I'm pretty sure I never said it was a "righteous" cause. I just think what Sony is doing is BS...and they got what was coming to them.

From what I've read, non of these hackers are out to get anyone's information. They hacked the PSN in response to the above-mentioned issues. If that gave them access to user's personal information, that's on Sony, IMO. I wouldn't be too concerned over it...you probably have a better chance of your credit card info being stole from a Famous Dave's waitress when she takes your credit card away in the little book they give you to pay for your food.

Most of the "OMG...EVERYONE ON THE PSN IS COMPROMISED" crap comes from the media...with no attention paid to the actual reason behind it. They know doom and gloom make better news than actual reasoning, so they try to get everyone in a panic.

Or, to use your example, temporarily screwing up the Fender guitar of everybody who owns one and stealing their personal information in the process. Yeah, that'll show those lawyers!

Show me where the jailbreak hack revealed anyone's private information...

You're confusing said hack with the recent hack on Sony's PSN. They're not the same thing.

I'm not gonna waste my time explaining the situation again, but please THINK and COMPREHEND before you type.

I would not call George Hotz is innocent since he gain access to the access codes inside the PS3 and distribute it online, which is illegal. That is like if you have a successful pc game and someone broke into it, gain all the source code, and post it online so ppl can make illegal hacks of the game.

They hacked it because of the ip and because of sending Hotz to court, who made Sony to remove open OS because he was trying to hack the system.

Hotz breached the EULA of the console by hacking it and posting the code so that ppl can hack the system.

The thing is that you do own the console, but you don't own the software. It has always been like that with computer stuff. It is legal for hotz to jailbreak his ps3, but it isn't illegal to post the access codes on the net.

The jealbreak does hurt Sony since it allows ppl to play pirated games and make cheats for said games.

The reason Sony is up in arms since piracy has killed the psp.

Piracy has also killed the dreamcast. It might be fun to play different software on your ps3 like mame, but most ppl use the jailbreak code to play copy games, which hurts the videogame industry.

I wonder if you would feel the same if it happened to the 360 instead. The jailbreak hack allowed ppl to cheat online, which made games like modern warfare 2 on the ps3 unplayable because of the rampant cheating....Well, the fbi is now involved:

http://kotaku.com/#!5796832/fbi-cybercrimes-joins-22-states-in-sweeping-sony-playstation-network-investigation

We also don't know if the psn hack was possible because of the jailbreak ps3s; if the jailbreak ps3 or access codes were used to hack the servers, then there is a possbility that jailbreaking stuff might end up being illegal.

The original intent of the hack wasn't for this purpose, as far as I know. If people use it for the purpose of playing games for free, that's on them, and Sony...not on Hotz as far as I'm concerned.

This type of thing is always going to happen as long as the internet exists. EULA's are made to be broken...right or wrong. There's always an exploit, hack, crack, etc when it comes to the internet and technology.

I wonder how many people in this thread, who are preaching how wrong this is, have never illegally downloaded a song, movie, software, a video game, etc...

Sony handled the situation wrong, from a PR standpoint, and they're obviously paying for it now.

The jealbreak does hurt Sony since it allows ppl to play pirated games and make cheats for said games.

The Dreamcast isn't really comparable, because it was a different generation system.

With online gaming, and the many ways these companies have of detecting hacked copies of games, this is really a non-issue. That's why people don't mod the 360 like they did the original Xbox...because they don't want to be booted off Xbox Live.

If it happened to the Xbox under these same circumstances, I probably wouldn't be all that concerned. I would probably change my debit card number just to be safe, but I wouldn't be on here bitching about it, and would probably be taking the same stance. Like I said before, you have just as much of a chance of your information being stole from a waiter/waitress, when you use your card at a gas station, or anytime you use it online (looking at you, porn browsers...how many keyloggers and trojans do you have on your system that you're not aware of?). @lol@

From that link you provided, it seems the government is placing the responsibility right square on the nose of Sony too.

The main purpose to hack the system is to play piracy. Once you get the access codes, you can do anything to the system. However, most ppl do not know what to do to modded systems other than to play copy games on it. Some programs are legit, but most ppl who are into a hacked ps3 is to play copies. Hotz was aware of this yet he tried to hack the system more than 3 times.

That doesn't make it okay. Sony has the right for suing Hotz since he breach the EULA and publicly admitted to it. It is like breaking a contact on something you signed, and expecting not to get in trouble for it. That is like if I made leaked an unreleased movie online first and publicly announced it. I bet I would get sued for doing that.

I get what you're saying, but I can also understand where these hackers are coming from. I'm mostly arguing, just because I don't like my opinion challenged. @lol@ @smilepunch@

I just think Sony pulled a big PR boner here. Instead of taking legal action, they should have talked to Hotz personally, or even offered him a job, and a lot of money, to help them make their hardware and network more secure...heck, that's what the government usually does with hackers.

It our world today, the internet and technology are one of the few places where the "little" man can still feel like they have control over big business...and feel like they can make a difference. Some 20-year-old video game nerd can still bring a multi-million-dollar business to it's knees via technology because it's not promising what it offered...that's what this amounts to. Most hackers don't hack for personal gain, they hack to prove that they can do it, and that they have a sense of control.

I can sympathize with that sentiment.

Sony really should have hired Geohotz. They might have been more secure had they done so.

Geothotz is the reason why this has started. The group attacked because of the lawsuit

Well, its a damn shame the hackers have taken this route. Compromising peoples financial info is hurting the consumers not Sony.

If they really wanted to take on Sony they should have brought up dirty info regarding the infamous Sony rootkit and other DRM schemes from them.

Still hiring Geohotz would have been a smart move for Sony. Google hires android hackers all the time.

You shouldnt have encouraged him, he is doing it on here haha... definitely wont catch a meme on here. Its much easier for things to catch on on 4chan. So far since this happened every response ive seen from spystreak is with his saying. I think you're a good guy spystreak and freedom of speech and all, but its getting more annoying than cool.at least to me ha. On 4chan thats ALL they do, which is why its more appropriate there than here. ... but like i say, freedom of speech do what you want. :D

I have noticed him using it a lot lately. Reminds me when I was a tween/teen, trying to make up my own memes. But yeah, Spy, you should it on 4 chan, as oppose to here since it won't catch on here - the majority of the posters here do not use internet memes willy nilly.
