hmm... well, it is unusual because he doesn't look like a very big guy at all.

I really liked Brandon Routh.. it's too bad that the bad from "Returns" script ruined his chances

EDIT: it's too bad that the bad script from "Returns" ruined his chances

Agreed.

This guy looks like Supes. Honestly I think finding someone to play the character may be the easy part. Reeve, Routh, Welling, I think they've all brought something to the character and this guy probably will too.

Tough part is writing an interesting Supes story, something quality that the fans haven't seen before.

Wow, it is too bad. However I know you favored Brandon because he represented the gay community thanks to Brian Singer.

I just want to say that YOUR version of Superman has remained untouched at the moment. Now we have a new one, well... lets see how it goes. ;)

I never judge, but this turn of events is rather interesting. @brainy@

To get a sense of how the actor might look as Superman, here is a fanart someone did for the Gawker site:

Looks better than Routh already in that sketch. The guy needs to bulk up big time and hopefully his acting is good. So thankful Routh is out of this one, let's see if they get it right.

I am so glad someone here recognizes how Singer tried to appeal to his gay sensibilities, having Superman in that nasty suit was digusting. He gave Supes a tiny S, speedo shorts and a big mid section, then hired Spacey who is an openly.................

Disgusting, no place for that kind of promotion.

I think it was more than obvious to a lot of us. Although the film was a great sequel to the Donner films, it just felt uncomfortable watching it after a few times.

Ugh. I hope this doesn't turn into another one of those threads that tries to convince us that Superman Returns sucked because of some secret gay agenda. Complete BS.

Yes, the director was gay. No, that's NOT the reason the movie didn't work.

I'm not aiming for that. However like I just stated in the last post, I thought it was a good sequel to the Donner times, but like the Batman/Shoemaker(sp?) films, there was some discomfort about the films.

The gay elements totally helped undermine Superman Returns. Just one of the many reasons why the director and those hack writers couldn't get the relationship right between Supes and Lois. Made Supes and emo and a stalker.......that equals and epic FAIL if I ever heard one. My mom tried to watch it by herself totally unrelated to me and mentioned how horrible it was. I remember how word of mouth killed it and the backlash was so steady that even WB has claimed it as a 400 million failure. It's the only movie to gross 400 million and people claim it was a failure.......LOL. Oh yeah, let's follow up Superman Returns with Superboy the sneezy, sickly superpowered floppy haired weirdo kid who has a dead beat father who can find time to save the world than raise his son. That movie should burn in oblivion forever and ever. People talk about SUperman III and IV, I say give me those than emo daddy superman and emo superbaby.........hell Superman was so stupid in that movie believed Krypton existed by news plants from Lex Luthor...............STUPID.

Amen.

There was NO gay agenda to that film at all.

It was just a case of starting with a bad premise for the character, like trying to do a story where someone accuses Batman and Robin of being gay.

There is just nowhere for the characters to go in such a story.

Honestly, as long as the story is better thought out than the last movie, does the casting of a relative unknown actor as the title role really matter? A role like Superman is tough to fill with a big name actor because of the backlash that is going to happen. The focus should be more on the Director of the film in cases such as this. Also, there should never be a sequel to a film that doesn't feature the original actors or director. While it was cool to see the 80's graphics during the intro of Superman Returns, that was the unfortunate highlight of the film.

I must of been off somewheres

I have never heard that before how ridiculous to come up with nothing better then to pick on Byran Singers sexual orientation

There's people out there that have it in their heads that if someone is gay, and expressing themselves, that such expressions automatically imply advocating homosexuality.

Its just another immature manifestation of homophobia.

There are many, many gay folks working in expressive arts, like movies, music, comics, writing who can produce "straight" material with no hidden gay innuendos to it.

That can be kind of tough to pull off. Movies, as much as they are "art", are also product. As product they need to be made on a schedule so that they can start generating money. That schedule doesn't always jibe with the career paths of the talent that work on the films--hence sequels don't always have the same actors or the same crew.

The biggest hindrance in casting actors in a sequel is money.

Case in point: Terrence Howard in Iron Man, not appearing in the sequel. The claim is that he was over-paid for the first movie, not because of how he played the part.

Paramount was happy with his performance--they were NOT happy with the deal his agent got for him, so they did not sign him for the sequel.

That happens.

Honestly, as long as the story is better thought out than the last movie, does the casting of a relative unknown actor as the title role really matter? A role like Superman is tough to fill with a big name actor because of the backlash that is going to happen.

Studios started to clue into casting uproars back when Michael Keaton was cast as Batman. This was just before the Internet, but the outrage ( via letter writing) was vocal enough that it caught the studios off-guard. It wasn't so much that fans were communicating their discord amongst themselves........it was the fact that news was being disseminated via fan magazines that added a new element to things. The fan magazines were timely enough in publishing news that fans were relatively johnny-on-the-spot in terms of finding out stuff and then reacting to it.

Now, the Internet has made reaction instant. Nowadays reaction isn't measured in weeks or days.......its in minutes--and THAT scares the studios.

To that end, a unknown is a better bet to cast in the lead role because if the film is a hit, then a new star is made. If the film bombs then an established star doesn't need to take the fall for it, and they can still headline in something else.

You know what bugged me about Routh's Superman?

His hair.

Seriously, whoever the hairstylist on SupeReturns was needs to be banned from Hollywood. It was this awkward over hairsprayed sculpted mess. It was like a bad combover plastered to his head with vaseline. Awful.

Let's get one thing straight folks (no pun intended):

The ONLY reason Superman Returns is considered a failure, financially speaking, is because Warner Brothers has always included the cost of the long string of failed attempts to get Superman back on the big-screen as part of the "production budget" for Superman Returns. This is why the film was constantly referred to as "the most expensive movie of all time" when it was released. The failed attempts at a Superman revival date all the way back to the late 80's and basically tacked on $50 to $100 million in "production costs" for Superman Returns. The movie would have had to hit $300+ million domestic box office before Warner Brothers would even really think about calling it successful.

It was generally positively received by critics, though audiences didn't respond to it as strongly, and money-wise was not all that far off from what Batman Begins made domestically ($201 million vs. $205 million, and world-wide Superman Returns exceeded Batman Begins ($391 million vs. $372 million). Yet Batman Begins was quickly greenlit for a sequel, whereas Superman Returns was not...because of that additional costs tacked on to SR's budget.

If Bryan Singers orientation determines the outcome of something established then it does warrant comments and observations. Superman Returns was a colossal joke and it didn't hit with audiences or kids. I am sorry but I don't believe boys want to play with a weak chinned metro sexual Superman in speedos.

Also I am not sorry for NOT wanting a metro sexual Superman who is some gay fantasy, keep it to the core of the character. Boys left those horrible toys on the shelf right where they belonged, another reason it was deemed a colossal failure. DVD sales also proved it was a losing combination of Singer/story/casting

The movie was sooo flawed, even Singer in his arrogance forbid people to bring Superman comics on the set because they hampered his flawed and selfish vision of the character. He made one good movie Usual Suspects while everything else was total garbage. I remember casual fans hated the movie, it was a joke.

The costume sucked

The story sucked

The casting sucked...........there is nothing that can be done with those things all flawed.

I look forward to this new movie, at least a chance to get it right. The reason the Superman project has been in limbo so many years before and after SR is because selfish directors and producers who want to re envision the character rather than staying true to its roots.

In the end, all the Superman Returns, Brandon Routh, and Singer fans are a very small and insignificant minority. The real fans have spoken!!
