Data: Shouldn't he have had a blue uniform?

I was continuing through DS9 and realized ath Jadzia was wearing blue. She is listed as the cheif science officer, like Spock. Didn't data fill that role too? I'm not sure what Data's official role was, he wasn't reporting to Geordi or Forge, but to the captain, so i'd guess he was Cheif science officer. Anyone know for sure?

I'm also curious as to why some of them like Troy and Six of 9 got to wear specaility uniforms. I always figured Uhara was some kind of "space pentecostal" and didn't believe women should wear pants. But I don't see any reason why the other two ladies named got special uniforms.

Anyone else catch any weird uniform questions? or maybe could answer mine?

The whole new uniform colors never made sense. You were use to how the colors went with what specialty in the original series, then TNG came along and threw it all out the window. Heck, why do some in Engineering wear gold while others wear red?

Data was more in Operations, than Sciences-and as such he'd wear the gold tunic from Ops.

Troi wore a casual duty uniform most of the time because that was her preference and privilege being the liaison between the Captain, the crew, and the civilian families on board. After Troi took and passed the command test, she wore the sciences tunic, because she then had command crew/senior staff status. The episode " Disaster" is the turning point for Troi, because prior to that incident, she never really needed to exercise her command authority, and was forced into that position during the emergency. After that episode, the character begins her slow climb to the command chair.

7 of 9 wore a casual uniform because she was NOT Starfleet, and thus being a civilian could have worn anything she chose.

TNG had a lot of unusual uniform looks. There were the unusual "unisex" skirts seen early on--and notably in the first episode. Then there were all kinds of specialty uniforms and such for engineering, sciences etc.--basically work clothes and coveralls.

Remember, TOS had quite a variety of uniforms too, especially in what was cited as the enlisted crew. There were a lot of different smocks, and coveralls then as well.

I wish I could answer your question or the one thats always bugged me: Why couldn't Data get promoted in 15+ years?

DIdn't he get a commander rank in the TNG movies? I know worf did.

Data is not ambitious.

Really that simple. He'd not seek a command track unless it was offered, and thus he'd not distinguish himself beyond "normal protocols". True, he has commanded, and shown command ability, but its not the same as having battle or command savvy like Riker, who had more of those traits. Data was second officer, third in command, and had probably risen as far as he could without going on to command a ship himself.

Data was content to just be Data, and to act as second officer and ops specialist.

There's also probably some of the bias against him being an artificial life-form. There were several instances of a level of distrust against him in a command situation, and that probably carried over to Starfleet brass as well. It probably took a long time to recognize him because of that, moreso that it would for a genuine humanoid officer.

That and the fact that if you start promoting all your main cast members they'll eventually, realisticly, have to leave the ship for their next assignment, and who wants that?

Riker could have been gone after season 2 to be a captain but he stayed in his position for 15 years? And he was supposed to be the "ambitious" young officer?

You rarely see the same 7 people working together for 15 years straight in ANY job much less an organization where transfers and promotions happen on a regular basis.

I'm not knockin' TNG. Just pointing it out.

I wonder why they neve had a spinoff where Riker commanded his own ship

They do, but its only in paperback form. Look for the Star Trek: Titan series of books. They are actually decent stories.

I just find it funny you wrote "Geordi or Forge", instead of Geordi La Forge. Forge was, basically, the chief engineer of the X-Men, and Patrick Stewart played both Picard and Xavier.

There were promotions during the shows run.

Data started as a lieutenant, so did Geordi and Worf. Both of the later were lieutenant junior grade in the first season. By the end of the show, Geordi and Data were lieutenant commanders. Worf became a lieutenant commander in Star Trek Generations. Troi was actually a lieutenant commander for all seven seasons. TNG, DS9, and Voyager all saw promotions and demotions. The only crew that was never promoted was Star Trek Enterprise.

Data wore gold because he was a operations officer. I bet the show did this because his white make up would have clashed with the blue uniform. Enterprise D technically did not have a chief science officer nore did Voyager. DS9 was really the only show to have a Spock equivalent.

I think I have officially proved how much of a nerd I am.

There is a far simpler, one-word explanation for Seven of Nine and Troi (early on): Boobs.

True.

Truthfully I never found any of the Star Trek women very attractive. I mean they were pretty, but none of them seemed over sexualized or sex objects. As a kid they were clearly serious adults, and as an adult they have a co-worker or cousin vibe to them somehow.

I was thinking the real answer was Data's skin as well. Dax really seemed to be doing the same role, "ops" was just the bridge of DS9.

Voyager is a loose canon, I think it's hard to count setup as normal because half of them were Maquis. That was one of the few things that show had going for it.

I know Geordi didn't even start as cheif enginer, it was some random beareded guy that was barely seen in season 1.

I thought Worf made Commander?

btw, Who were the demotions?

That's a good catch, I think I meant Geordi or Worf, but was reporting straight to the captain.

I used to like forge, but the new younger take on forge on WOLVERINE (and also occasionally maybe some x-men too) doesn't seem to fit right.

I think Troi's dress first season was all about the eye candy even if they didn't have her swishing around. They did a pretty good job of implying competency regardless of outfit, but whether it was the go-go boots and miniskirts from TOS through 7o9's weird, skin-tight bondage outfit - they were the sex-appeal aspect of the shows. Nothing overt, but something to look at.

Worf only made Lt. Commander on STNG and DS9

Tom Paris on Voyager was demoted after spending a month in the brigg for disobeying Janeways orders and I think Tuvok may have been demoted at some point too.

And of course the most famous demotion in Trek Cannon is Kirk's demotion from Admiral to Captain in Trek 4.

I have the answer for you: It's just a show. (lol)

I'm just kidding man. That's what my father-in-law says any time I point out some flaw in a movie or over-analyze a plot point. He'll say, "It's just a movie." (lol)

And hey, while we're discussing errors, inconsistencies, and/or continuity problems, something's been bothering me about Star Trek 2009, even though it is "just a movie". Remember the scene at the beginning where Nero has requested that the captain of the U.S.S. Kelvin come aboard the Narada? Well, it shows him coming down in the turbolift several levels to the hangar bay. But that would suggest the ship's constructed with the bay on the bottom rear like the Enterpirse. But of course you see in the next scene or so he exits the bay in a shuttle and you notice that the shuttle bay is at the top of the ship. That just didn't make sense to me. I mean, I see where he walks up a couple of flights of stairs to the shuttle bay, but...I don't know. Him coming down the turbolift from the bridge when the shuttle bay is up above the bridge just didn't make sense to me. Am I missing something? Can anyone explain it to me?

That whole movie was one long illogic-train. None of it makes much sense.

the only thing i can think of is that Turbo lifts don't move in 3 dimensions. He went down, then had to go back up and the latter was off camera.
