Superman Movie Reboot

I was just read that Christpher Nolan has been given the keys to the Superman franchise in hope that he can lead it to the success of the Batman franchise

I for one do hope they start from scratch, because Superman Returns was a nice homage to the original 2 Christopher Reeve Movies, but after the opening credits, it all started going downhill from there (Superkid, Lois's marriage, Brandon Routh). Singer had some cool ideas about how to handle Lex Luthor's character, but he should have stayed on the X-Men franchise and saved us from Bret Ratner's X-3 (which coincidentally, Bryan Singer tucked his tail between his legs and went back to the X-franchise). At least with Christopher Nolan, he possibly will pick someone who has considerable knowledge of the character take a shot at working on the script (David Goyer, Jeph Loeb, Goeff Johns).

Whatever. It's time for DC and Warner Brothers to get off their asses and start making comic book movies. And doing them right.

good luck with that ever happening hopefully Nolan will make a good superman film accurate or not after superman 3 and superman returns I have pretty much lost interest in the man of steel for the longest time even smallville sucked I want a superman film with someone who can really give superman a challenge like Doomsday,Zod,Metallo or even Brainiac not some bald hack who is obsessed with realistate who can only hurt superman with kryptonite

It comes down to $$$$$. In Warner Bros.'s eyes, Nolan can do no wrong until proven otherwise. It is kind of like if you are the director of a little movie called "Titanic" and you walk into the studio office and say "I am thinking about doing a little 3-D scifi pic with blue aliens", the studio is going to take about 60 seconds to say yes. TDK made WB more money than any other movie ever, so they kind of have a little faith in him.

Well, I am always one of the few who think Superman Returns was terrible and actually like Superman IV the Quest for Peace (Great idea but poor execution). The most troubling of the article was the involvement of the Shuster and Seigel heirs. I don't think they can properly manage the Superman name and franchise and off all the characters I know and love, I wish DC actually owned the entire rights. Can you even imagine Superman at Marvel comics or some indie #$##? The real blame is the suck butt executives at Warner Bros who didn't properly exploit the DC Universe in movies. Marvel chugged out movies for better or worse but at least a lot of their iconic classics were bought to the screen, quickly I might add. I am a little wary of the entire situation, I don't believe Nolan is the savior of his project, I would have to hear his ideas first, because Batman Begins sucks, the costumes for the movies sucked, and the voice Bale uses is terrible......other than that he is cool but his vision may not be cut out for Superman.

People need to stop trying to reinvent the wheel with Superman, the character is so sturdy established, they need to focus on an awesome story, an awesome director who can pull it all together and make you feel for the characters, and some serious action, only top notch effects. The CGI Superman in Superman Returns was utter #$## and pointless, strap a man in a harness and film him in all poses, unless its utterly needed, the part where he pushes the shuttle off the plane was ugly.

Please no! Nolan has already screwed over Batman (yea, I said it). Keep his butt away from Superman.

How do you figure that?

His Batman movies have been great

The first was okay, if not completely original. The second was totally out of control. (Batman works out of a corner office and uses a machine gun?)

Batman didn't use a gun it was people at the beginning wearing Batman costumes working with Scarcrow

The Batman movies had good parts and some real bad parts. I'd really like for these movies to get away from leather as a costume neccesity and what's with always killing off the villains?

The first superman movie was great to establish lex luthor and the second (donner version) was fantastic with Zod (except for the repeat ending). I liked Superman 4 and how they played with the Bizarro concept, even though it was eventually cut (yes the movie was given a poor budget to work from). Superman should follow suite. I want the same music and feel of the donner films with some cool villians (definately no super kid or lois marriage 'weird'). Superman is one of those properties that will always be respected as classic.

regards,

Joshua

PS- Siegle/Shuster heirs are not holding up the films, and there should be no concerns about them moving the property to any other publisher. DC owns the controlling share. Superman will always be DC. The heirs are entitled to a portion of the millions that superman brings in each year, and not the 20,000 that shuster/seigle were paid since the mid 70's.

No one said that the Shuster/Seigel heirs were holding up anything, also the article doesn't sstate that DC will retain publisher rights

Is that job generally a Producer's job? And if so why not just call it that. Sounds more like what most comic book editor's used to do in the 90's, they have control of the product and hire writers and artist to do the job.

The job basically translates into, "We have 100 different poeple with 100 different ideas for Superman and we basically don't know what to do with him so we'll hire a guy who had great success with Batman, funnel all our ideas through him, and cross our fingers that we'll get something good".

I'm not saying it's a bad idea or that it won't work. I just want to get SOMETHING going with a Superman movie.

And what corner office are you talking about? I think you need to watch both films again and figure out what's going on.

I'm not optimistic about this.

Superman Returns was a terrible movie riddled with bad ideas that were crowbarred together.

I dislike all of the Batman films going back to the boring, meandering 1989 Keaton flick and including the recent pair directed by Nolan. I know I'm in the minority here. People really love to kneel before the alter of Ledger's Joker, but I just find these movies so devoted to such a realistic take on Batman that all the fun and fantasy is crushed from the mythology... and no. This isn't a prayer for the return of the Adam West Batman. These movies just take themselves so seriously we're left with long boring movies.

That comment at the end about "making these movies edgier" confirms my pessimism. Whenever I hear that about movies or comic books, it generally means bad news. This is SUPERMAN for God's sake. "Edgy?"

My sentiments exactly. DC has a plethora of characters to choose from and many would translate great to the silver screen. Nolan has made a winning cash for for one of the big names of the DC-verse and I hope he can bring the same magic to Superman. I, personally, am a huge fan of both Batman Begins and The Dark Knight and can't wait to see where that franchise goes.

Superman will be a different animal all together for Nolan, however, because he likes to go for the gritty and realistic look for the Batman movies (which works well for the character.) Superman needs to be grandiose. And as much as I agree Luthor is the main arch-nemesis to the protagonist - give us someone else. I want to see Superman go toe-to-toe with someone who can take the abuse and dish it out. I really liked Superman Returns (except for the super-kid - could have left that bit out) and I thought Routh was a decent cast. But I'm sure the stink the movie left will tarnish his attachment to the character.

So. Start over again with a fresh face and a new franchise. Give a quick 15-20 minute synopsis of the Superman origin and get to a plot.

Another person who needs a rewatch. I don't think Scarecrow and The Joker being arrested by the police counts as "killing off the villains".

Super Powers said it a few times and he's right. Superman is a very rich character and there are a lot of his villains that haven't had a chance to make it onto film. Should this franchise ever get off the ground again there are great stories that can be adapted into movies, including the recent Brainiac and New Krypton stories.

I think the only problem with Nolan overseeing these movies is Warner Brothers thinks the dark stance taken with the Batman films is the formula to everything. And I think we all know that isn't the answer.

Yea, but how many different stories can they tell?

Use Brainiac.......an unstoppable menace from outer space, and you cannot use Doomsday, because he's an unstoppable menace from outer space.

This is the problem that was illustrated with the Spiderman movies--certain seemingly "new" stories end up being repeats of stories they have already done. Going over stories already done inside a franchise is not a good thing. That is why a character like Toyman would probably not work--he's a chunky nebbish bad-guy with a petty agenda against Superman, all for his personal gain. We've seen that 5 times already with all 4 of the original Superman movies, and then Superman Returns. Its the only motivation the character of Lex Luthor can provide.

Characters from Krypton causing problem? That's Superman II, no matter how else you look at it.

Bizarro, has essentially been done, and Parasite.......pffft, Superman losing his powers again seems to be yet another contrived story device.

After that.........really...who/what's left?

That's the problem here--the stories that these movies are trying to draw upon are often shallow and repetitive, because that is the real nature of comic book stories. Its why the more oddball secondary characters tend to be better headliners in movies--because they also tend to be somewhat more novel and interesting.

All I want is a normal clean cut Supes, I don't want him dealing with child support issues, fighting his secret obsession with picking up hookers, drug addiction to pink kryptonite, his internal struggle to be God, or something that studios might think will make Supes edgy or interesting, cuz they think that a clean morally correct super hero is not appealing to the majority of people.

Or they might go in the extreme other direction and make him some socialist idealist radical that cries for the criminals and fights the authorities.

I would like to see a "smallville" type Lex, serious, evil, but self deluded to think he is doing good. I never was to critical of smallville not always being comic accurate, especially with DC constantly changing origins and little continuity ( I mean check the DC official web page, it now follows the show's origin in the comics, so Lex meet Clark and had his life saved by him.) the show has gotten really good the past 3 years (except the Lana parts). Lex should have his power suit and good toe to toe with Supes as well as have a more stronger villain like Zod, Darkseid, or Mettalo. I never like the funny slapstick Lex from the movies, I prefer the smallville or cartoon Lex. here's to being hopeful.
